In »Dialogues« führt die in Brüssel lebende deutsche Künstlerin Stephanie Kiwitt zum ersten Mal verschiedene Arbeiten der letzten Jahre, die sie in Form von Publikationen und Ausstellungsprojekten realisiert hat, in einem gemeinsamen Kontext zusammen. Neue Anschlüsse von Bild zu Bild entstehen, die es so nie gegeben hat, jedes neue Bild ist ein Sprung in der Zeit und im Raum, zwischen Belgien und Marseille, Prag und Gent … Oder handelt es sich eher um Kollisionen, denn um neue Anschlüsse? Anschnitte, Ausschnitte, Bilder, die über ihren Rand hinausreichen, die weiterführen, woanders hinführen – vielleicht in ein anderes Bild hinein? In besonderer Weise gelingt es Stephanie Kiwitt, ihre Bilder, Serien und Bücher an einer Grenze anzusiedeln, an der eine Beschreibung etwas eröffnet und ermöglicht, anstatt es auszuformulieren und abzuschließen, eine Grenze, an der die Bilder etwas zur Verfügung stellen anstatt es zu demonstrieren. Diese Öffnung ereignet sich nicht ohne zutun, sie muss in Gang gesetzt werden – durch Bilder, die nicht zufällig entstehen und auch nicht beiläufig, die aber nicht so tun, als wüssten sie es immer schon besser, Bilder, denen eine Zurückhaltung eigen ist, durch die sie einen Dialog eröffnen, sowohl zwischen den Bildern selbst als auch mit ihren BetrachterInnen.

Obwohl die Druckmaschine aussieht wie ein Kopiergerät, wird die Farbe ohne Anwendung von Hitze und Chemie auf das Papier gebracht, also energiesparend und ökologisch. Heute haben Grafiker und Designer aus der ganzen Welt den Risographen – und die entsprechenden Maschinen für ähnliche, schon fast vergessene Techniken wie die Mimeographie– für sich entdeckt und eine unerwartete Renaissance des analogen Druckens in Gang gesetzt. Auf eine sorgfältig recherchierte Einführung über Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft folgt ein Beitrag über wichtige Pioniere der aktuellen Risographie-Szene. Haifisch’s idiosyncratic, episodic comic chronicles the experiences of a young artist in his formative years, satirising the exclusive, ephemeral and frequently absurd world of fine art. Plagued by doubts and anxiety, the artist is confronted with constant setbacks punctuated by occasional, surprising glimpses of recognition. The Artist was printed by offset lithography at DeckersSnoeck in Belgium.

This book is the first to document the remarkable history of the International Institute of Design (IID), an independent school of architecture founded and directed by Alvin Boyarsky from 1970 – 72, and highlights a pivotal episode in the career of Boyarsky, best known for his subsequent role as chairman of the Architectural Association (1971 – 90). Launched in the wake of the institutional upheavals that had swept schools of architecture during the late 1960s, the IID introduced an alternative model of architectural instruction: one that brought together a range of teaching methods, design strategies, theories and projects alongside an international assortment of protagonists. In Progress details this short-lived experiment through a trove of previously unpublished material, and reveals how three informal architectural gatherings, held over three successive summers, can be seen to have established not only a network of architects and discourses, but a new model for architectural education.

Disobedient Bodies: JW Anderson at The Hepworth Wakefield has been published alongside the exhibition of the same name, curated by JW Anderson and opening The Hepworth Wakefield in March 2017. The book – made in a close collaboration between Jonathan Anderson, Andrew Bonacina and OK-RM – acts as an alternative exhibition space in which the pairings and combinations that unfold within The Hepworth’s galleries come in to play with images from Anderson’s collaborative photographic projects with Jamie Hawkesworth. The book object comprises a series of interleaved sections amassing 142 pages and featuring works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi, Eileen Gray, Sarah Lucas, Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Dior, Helmut Lang and many more, alongside contributions from Anderson’s own collections.

Das Indexbuch fungiert dabei nicht als klassische Monografie, sondern als eine Art Röntgenaufnahme. Es durchleuchtet und analysiert die verschiedenen Niveaus und Schichten von Thuns Welt und bedient sich dazu emotionaler Bilder und Begriffe. Matteo Thun durch sein Werk verstehen, »vom Löffel zur Stadt«: von der Kaffeetasse bis zum Restaurant, vom Berghotel bis zur Armbanduhr, vom Kochtopf bis zur Villa in Alleinlage. Mit einer Vielzahl ausdrucksstarker Illustrationen, wie Plänen, Aquarellskizzen, Fotografien und Zeichnungen. Die Polaroids waren Dash Snows “Eintritt” in die Kunstwelt und wurden der Legende nach von ihm gemacht, um Erlebnisse zu dokumentieren, an die er sich aufgrund seines Rauschzustandes sonst nicht erinnern könnte. Die sehr spontan wirkenden Aufnahmen zeigen skurrile Alltagsszenen, Partys, Drogenkonsum, sexuelle Anspielungen und sehr intime Portraits aus der Umgebung des Künstlers. In vielen Polaroids taucht der Künstler selbst auf und wird damit gleichzeitig zum Verwalter und Subjekt seiner Bilder.

In seinem Atelier legt Tillmans zur Übersicht Bilder auf langen Tischen aus, bevor sie an der Wand oder im Buch ihren Platz finden. Diese Arbeitsweise wird hier zum Konzept, das Buch zur Installation: In Manual ordnet er eigene Photographien, malerische Arbeiten und Texte sowie vorgefundene Zeitungsartikel zu einer assoziativen Gesamtschau an. Das Material verdichtet sich so zu einer komplexen künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung mit unterschiedlichen sozialen und politischen Themen, die der Künstler seit Jahren verfolgt. Tillmans schafft damit eine überzeugende Ergänzung zu seinen rein photographischen Arbeiten. Für Wolfgang Tillmans sind Installation und Präsentation seiner Arbeit ebenso wichtig wie die Arbeit selbst. Mit Manual assoziiert er ein “Handbuch” für die Erforschung der sichtbaren Welt. Es versteht sich aber auch als “Anleitung” zu Tillmans’ Oeuvre, als Kompendium, in dem der Künstler seine persönliche Sicht auf die eigene Arbeit vorstellt.

In den Zeichnungen und Grafiken von Maribel Mas treten die Interferenzen zufällig auf, an den Berührungspunkten der Linien. Unter Verwendung von Schablonen aus Papier kann die Künstlerin straffe Linien ziehen, die dann wie die Saiten eines Musikinstrumentes in Schwingung versetzt werden können. Tatsächlich haben die Wiederholungsmuster serieller Musik einen bemerkenswerten Einfluss auf ihre Arbeit, besonders die minimalistischen Kompositionen von Steve Reich und das Streben nach einer „phase music“, in der identische Klangphasen aufeinander gelegt werden mit minimalen Umstellungen. Mit einem ähnlichen Ansatz spielt die Künstlerin mit der Möglichkeit einer „phase drawing“. Dafür verwendet sie nur die einfachsten Materialien: Papier und Tusche. Das Papier, mehr als eine tragende Oberfläche, wird zum aktiven Element. Den einzigartigen Charakter eines nicht industriellen, nicht standarisierten Materials zu verstehen und entdecken war ein langsamer Prozess, ermöglicht durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Handwerksmeistern in Japan, die die verschiedenen von ihr verwendeten Papiersorten aus Ganpi-, Mitsumata- und Kouzofasern herstellen. In ihrer Barcelonaer Werkstatt und der Leipziger Spinnerei hat Maribel Mas an diversen Grafikprojekten mitgewirkt, in denen sie neue Möglichkeiten der Linie entdecken konnte. Ausgehend von diesen Erfahrungen mit Lithografie, Cliché verre und Photopolymer konzentriert sie ihr Werk auf sich wiederholenden Linien als konstruktives Element. Die Interferenzen, die auf natürliche Weise in einem Arbeitsverfahren ohne vorherige Skizzen entstehen, laden zum Nachdenken ein: über die Vielfältigkeit und Unbeständigkeit der Dinge – oder aber sie eröffnen einen Spielraum, in dem der Blick mit den Linien frei spielen kann. Die Zeichnerin und Lithografin Maribel Mas ist 1967 in Caracas geboren. Im Jahr 2000 ließ sie sich in Barcelona nieder, wo sie sich auf Lithografie spezialisierte und 2005 die Druckwerkstatt „Taller Esquina“ gründete. Heute arbeitet sie gemeinsam mit Museen und Kunsthochschulen an verschiedenen grafischen Projekten. Since 1998, Ingo Giezendanner, alias GRRRR, has been documenting the urban spaces in which he has travelled and lived. Apart from his native city of Zurich, his travels have taken him to diverse cities from New York and New Orleans to Cairo, Nairobi, Karachi and Colombo. In a 48-page dossier, 032c Issue 31 explores THE HELMUT LANG LEGACY and how his abrupt exit from the industry in 2005 has been felt like phantom limb in the world of fashion. Anlässlich der Ausstellung erscheinen vier Kataloge der PreisträgerInnen mit je 64 Seiten in einem Schuber mit Texten von Kristin Bartels, Dietrich von Berg und Hans-Werner Schmidt, herausgegeben von der Marion Ermer Stiftung in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig.

Im April 2013 begaben sich die Fotografen Nico Krebs und Taiyo Onorato – sie arbeiten seit zwölf Jahren zusammen – in einem Toyota Landcruiser Jahrgang 87 auf eine Reise in Richtung Osten. Die ungefähre Route war mit dem Finger auf der Landkarte abgefahren, ebenso der erhoffte Endpunkt der Reise bestimmt: Ulaanbataar, Hauptstadt der Mongolei. Eine richtige Expeditionsreise: ein Aufbruch ins mystische Reich des Ostens, Eurasia, Zentralasien, die Ausläufer des Himalajas, die Wälder Sibiriens, die Stan-Republiken, die gigantische Weite der ehemaligen Sowjetunion. Ein riesiger Kontinent, eine Landmasse, von der nur sehr wenige Bilder in unseren Köpfen verankert sind, zumindest keine klaren, definierten, eher ein Nebel aus Historie und Weltpolitik. Krebs und Onorato begaben sich auf die Suche nach diesen Bildern, sie wollten sie reproduzieren, sie selbst kreieren. Continental Drift ist ein Trip entlang der Grenzen der Dokumentation und Fiktion eines unbekannten Terrains und seiner möglichen Vergangenheit und spekulativen Zukunft. Zentral waren die Momente des absolut Fremden, Unzugänglichen, Bizarren gepaart mit einer beeindruckenden Offenheit und Gastfreundschaft, die sie noch nie so ausschweifend erleben durften und in spürbarem Gegensatz zu ihrer letzten Reise durch die Vereinigten Staaten steht (The Great Unreal, bereits in dritter Auflage in der Edition Patrick Frey erschienen). Viele der durchquerten Länder und Regionen befinden sich in einem Wandel: Irgendwo zwischen Jahrtausend alter Tradition und Historie, post-kommunistischer Standortbestimmung, religiösen, territorialen, ethnischen Wirren und dem dringenden Wunsch nach Anschluss an den globalen Turbokapitalismus – die Suche nach Identität ist spürbar. Diese Suche und auch Verwirrung widerspiegeln sich in Continental Drift.

The White Review No. 19 features an our interview with ALVARO ENRIGUE, a Mexican writer in New York, ALICE HATTRICK's meditation on illness and intimacy, an excerpt from VIRGINIE DESPENTES' Vernon Subutex (trans. Frank Wynne), and new poems from SOPHIE ROBINSON. We are also excited to present interviews with philosopher ROSI BRAIDOTTI (conducted as part of our collaboration with the Centre for New and International Writing at the University of Liverpool), on how the humanities can combat racism and sexism, and artist RACHEL MACLEAN, whose hyper-surreal dystopian videos offer a dark vision on the present times (and who also contributes a concertina insert of her recent prints). The are long form essays by JACQUELINE FELDMAN, on feminist protest group Femen; and conceptual artist JILL MAGID on her stay at the house of the late Luis Barragán. THOMAS CLERC (translated by Daniel Levin Becker) contributes a beautiful homage to his friend Edouard Leve, whose writing has featured in previous issues of The White Review. The issue also includes new fiction by JASON SCHWARTZ, poetry from CA CONRAD. The cover is by JULIA DAULT.

PROPAGANDA Propaganda, the manipulation of political opinion by means of carefully selected information or disinformation, is common to all eras. But rarely was the playing field so ambiguous and the players so hard to identify. Even at the highest political level, facts that appeared incontrovertible now seem to be ruthlessly parried by people wielding ‘alternative facts’. In an age defined by the alarming rise of Post-Truth politics, it is of the greatest importance to take a closer look at the nature and provenance of information, especially visual material. Historical examples aside, the portfolios featured in this issue come primarily from contemporary artists. These artists share a critical attitude to propagandist media strategies and the visual imagery deployed within them. Art has the capacity to expose power, and where possible show its true face. That is more valuable now than ever.
