Debut short-form comics publication by Dutch illustrator Viktor Hachmang. Book of Void deals with the romantic notion of destroying precious artworks and aims to explore its inherent logic – what is it like to live in a world ruled by fear in which a static work of art can become a harmful incomprehensible “Thing” that must be destroyed? Book of Void is a fictionalized account of two subsequent slashings of monumental minimal artworks at the Stedelijk Museum and takes cues from The Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi’s classic handbook of samurai swordsmanship and philosophy. Book of Void poses the question if such acts of violence are truly pointless, or do they possess an innate spiritual beauty?

The book features a historical reference on housing needs by Lucius Burckhardt, a philosophy on contemporary machinic capitalism by Gerald Raunig, an essay on gender questions in the sharing economy by Brigitte Theißl, an analytical text on Airbnb’s photo policy and how it affects our everyday life by åyr. It also brings together a set of polemic theses by its editor Christian Berkes, an agonistic panel talk held at Swiss Institute in NYC, which was organized by the London based art collective åyr, and a hyper positivist pamphlet for sharism by Isaac Mao. The text that lent its main title to this publication rounds up this multi-perspective critique of the sharing economy and leads over into a lavishly illustrated Xerox Collection with hidden jokes, self-dissolving associations, and a beautiful form of early interior photography. In a meteoric rise to fame, the Los Angeles–based Haas Brothers have garnered international accolades for their set design and props for print and video, one-of-a-kind fashion works and their highly original furniture and object designs. Their exploration and mastery of materials—ranging from brass, bronze, porcelain and fur to highly technical resins and polyurethane—matched with their insatiable curiosity and remarkable visual intelligence, sets them apart as designers. Twin brothers Nikolai and Simon Haas (born 1984), known as The Haas Brothers, got their start in design by studying stone carving and construction under their father in their hometown of Austin, Texas. In September 2010, the brothers were commissioned to collaborate on a project by renowned architectural firm Johnston Marklee, at Sony Studios in Los Angeles, and “The Haas Brothers” as a studio practice was born. In the two years since, the brothers have continued to grow their design studio and spend their time prototyping forms and experimenting with materials, surface textures and processes. In 2013 they created a limited edition furniture collection for Versace. In their current design works, The Haas Brothers explore aesthetic and formal themes related to nature, science fiction, psychedelia and color theory.

Clare Rojas is an internationally shown artist, currently based in San Francisco and is considered to be part of the Mission School. She is “known for creating powerful folk-art-inspired tableaus that tackle traditional gender roles.” She works in a variety of media, including painting, installations, video, street art, and children’s books. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and previously attended the Rhode Island School of Design. Referencing West Coast modernism, Quaker art, Native American textiles, Byzantine mosaics, and Outsider art, Rojas tells stories through painting, installations, and video. Often her narratives concern relationships between the sexes and among humans and animals, in their struggle to find harmony and balance. Many works quietly celebrate the traditional strengths of women, depicting them like Russian nesting dolls in conventional roles without critical undertones or hints of sexual exploitation. Quilt-like patterns in vivid colors accentuate the folk art-inspired scenes present in some works, while simple geometric forms and stark interiors evoke Bauhaus design in others. Recently, Rojas has focused her attention on the abstract shapes formed by architecture and shadow that dominate interior spaces, producing colorful, precise, abstract compositions on stretched linen.

The photographer Jens Klein was invited by the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst to produce an image book. He decided to sift through the application documents of over eight thousand scholarship holders from the 1950s on who had submitted analogue passport photographs to accompany their applications. Covering a period from 1950 to 2012, Klein selected 176 photographs of applicants who had received support from the foundation: a kind of transverse look across time and a visual chronicle reflecting Germany’s history and the evolution of photography. The photographs show how the medium has changed over the years: from black and white to colour, from an analogue to a digital medium, from elaborate studio shots to quick photo-booth pictures. In 2012, the Studienwerk introduced an online application process, thus ending the era of analogue images.

Machines have long been integral to architectural discourse. Vitruvius concluded his ten books with a meditation on war machines, and Le Corbusier published on his industrial muses just over 100 years ago. Yet something is different today. We have always learned from machines, but now, machines learn. In the period from the 1950s to the 1970s, a large number of cinemas were built in both the urban and rural areas of South India. Their architecture is an unusual mix of Western influences and local building styles. The brightly coloured façades resemble stage sets and provide a foretaste of the film experience in the auditorium, where the extravagant forms and embellishments are continued, getting the audience in the mood for the cinematic world before the opening credits roll. One might call this architectural language a kind of hybrid modernism. Many of these cinemas have been maintained in their original state. However, in the big cities, the process of converting them into multiplexes has already begun. Haubitz+Zoche’s photographs from the period 2010 – 2013 document a piece of cinema culture that has already for the most part disappeared in Europe and the USA and is being increasingly displaced in India by commercial interests.

Ecology has as its Greek root oikos, meaning the entire habitat, house, or family—an interdependent ecosystem. (Economy has the same root.) We know it now as the study of the relationship between organisms and their environment, the interdependence of humans and their institutions. As Chickasaw poet Linda Hogan notes: “Here is a lesson: what happens to people and what happens to the land is the same thing.” And this is what the work that follows weighs. The third volume of the documenta 14 South as a State of Mind concerns the constant correlation among nature, capital, power, and language. The contributions that follow are documents of language, or hunger, or both. Why “language or hunger”? Consider the mouth a border, a boundary, a threshold: to swallow or to speak. Emptiness or language (or their meeting). On one side, inside, one feels physical hunger, a void; on the other side, outside, one puts forth language (into another void, perhaps). Hence language—being born with one, or finding it again, or creating one anew, a kind of lexicon—can be a means of nourishment, while hunger can be a form of resistance. Indeed, the new essays, poems, scripts, artists projects, and older manifestos and parables that together constitute this issue of South articulate the necessity of language, while considering consumption and hunger as political and aesthetic facts and fields that determined our past and will construct our collective future. “In contemporary times,” Nabil Ahmed writes, “emergent ecological crisis is a paradigmatic negative moment with regard to the unresolved dark twinning of capitalism and colonialism.” And it is this dark twinning that is our focus. If, as Ahmed declares, attentiveness to environmental violence is necessary for the “formation of an anticapitalist political ecology at once structural, social, psychic, and environmental,” we believe that an awareness of the role that language plays in this formation, as complicity or resistance, psychic or structural, is equally important. Who are you? At first glance, It appears to be a straightforward question, and one that – in most instances – we are conditioned to answer simply: by providing our name. Yet, upon reflection, it begins to feel like such an arbitrary distinction. It is probably fair to assume that the question of identity has forever occupied a position of great importance in the human mind, and That it will always continuing to do so. The same can be said of the relationship between photography and identity. In the current issue of Foam Magazine we tackle the spectrum of identity and its various subchapters with eight portfolios that share a very specific perspective: the dialogue, and sometimes the contrast between a fluid and constantly renegotiated sense of self and a rooted, outspoken sense (or need) of community. The Dessau Masters’ Houses were not only showcases of “new living” (Neues Wohnen) but also places where modern methods of housekeeping could be demonstrated. The topical relevance of this question was discussed at the 2015 Haushaltsmesse, an international trade fair on the art of housekeeping and budgeting. The publication Housekeeping in the Modern Age, which takes a documentary approach to this subject, now brings together these different viewpoints eyeing the question through the prism of the problems we face today. In the face of climate change and dwindling resources, the externalized costs of running a modern household are back on the (kitchen) table. The book is a compilation of essays by internationally renowned anthropologists, economists, artists, architects, historians, and cultural studies experts and also contains a wealth of historical documents and photographs.
