Rebuilding Bhuj, India

-

In the context of climate change, environmental degradation and related natural disasters, architectural photography takes on another dimension beyond aesthetic criticism, namely documenting processes for building sustainable and social housing.
‘Rebuilding Bhuj, India’ explores the Hunnarshala project and educational programme, which was launched
by Sandeep Virmani after the 2001 earthquake to enable the inhabitants of the city of Bhuj to rebuild in a self-determined and sustainable way, and create better disaster resistant constructions.

The book documents a vision of socially inclusive and ecological construction based on the valorization of local traditions, in terms of handcrafted production techniques and natural materials, combined with new building technologies. The photographs shift the focus to the building skills, production processes and field studies of a traditional and visionary design-and-build practice.
