AA Files is the Architectural Association School of Architecture’s journal of record and the successor to a long line of AA house journals (including titles such as AA Notes, AA Journal, Arena and AAQ) that began with the school’s founding in 1847. Launched in 1981 by the AA’s then chairman, Alvin Boyarsky, the journal appears twice a year and is sent out to members of the Architectural Association, individual subscribers and is distributed to a global network of bookshops. Since 2007 AA Files has been under the editorship of Thomas Weaver, the fourth of its editors, following Mary Wall, Mark Rappolt and David Terrien, who, with issue 57, initiated a redesign that saw the introduction of a new graphic design template, developed and still produced by the John Morgan studio, and a shift of focus in terms of its content towards more writerly models of scholarship, criticism and investigation, prompted not only by work, exhibitions and events from within the school, but by a rich and eclectic mix of architectural enquiry from all over the world.

bauhaus 8 is given over to the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s annual theme for 2016: Movement. Its focus is on new departures in society, change and speed, migration and mobility as well as art and dynamism, architecture and performance, flights of fancy and locomotor systems. In bauhaus 8 we encounter Kandinsky on a bicycle, Moholy-Nagy’s Vision in Motion, Paul Klee overcoming gravity, Gropius’s writing desk in exile, and Karla Grosch’s programme of physical education at the Bauhaus as well as numerous other protagonists. The annual publication combines historical views with the contemporary positions of designers, artists, acrobats, choreographers, curators, and photographers. In the process it moves from the Bauhaus Building in Dessau to the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, to the festival stage at the Festspielhaus Hellerau, to Lawn Road Flats in London, and other venues. The Borrowers: Copyright and its Discontents The first copyright law, made in the eighteenth century, granted artists the exclusive right to control the copying of their original creations for 14 years. Too brief a period? Perhaps, but by the beginning of the twenty-first century, copyright’s term had grown to cover the life of the artist plus 70 years – which means that Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avigon will remain protected until 2043, 136 years after it was completed. Too long, surely? In this issue we look at the twentieth-century phenomenon of “copyright creep” and its implications for artists working in the Digital Age. We talk to Christopher Clary about Sorry to Dump On You, a personal/collective project embedded in gay online culture, and to David Claerbout about his unauthorized collaborations with Elvis Presley and others; we look at Eleanor Macnair’s Play-Doh recreations of iconic photographs; and we interview Stephanie Syjuco about her “copies, homages and perversions”. We also go in search of Ozmo and discover that even (and perhaps even especially) street artists get “bitten”, and meet Thomas Sauvin, whose remarkable (and entirely borrowed) Beijing Silvermine project is writing an alternative history of modern China. For some artists death is the end, but for others it opens a new chapter in their career. In this issue we talk to Dr Loretta Würtenberger, founder of the Institute for Artists’ Estates, about ways to keep artists’ works fresh and visible after their deaths, and we look at the remarkable posthumous career of Philippe Vandenberg. There’s also a Paper Gallery dedicated to the collaged “conversations” of Ruth van Beek, in addition to Encounters with US painter Joan Semmel, German artists Neo Rauch and Thomas Ruff, Dutch photographer Scarlett Hooft Graafland, Danish designer Henrik Vibskov, and Spanish painter Secundino Hernández.

Das vorliegende Heft, das unseren Vietnamfokus abschließt, konstatiert einen Paradigmenwechsel im Umgang mit den Herausforderungen des Klimas. Statt klimatische Probleme konventionell technisch zu bearbeiten, löst die junge vietnamesische Architektengeneration sie kreativ mit architektonischen Mitteln. Im Gegensatz dazu hat der erste Band ARCH+ 226 Vietnam – Die stille Avantgarde das Augenmerk auf eine sich derzeit vollziehende, einschneidende Wende gerichtet, die das soziale Engagement der Architektur zum Ausgangspunkt einer Neufundierung der Disziplin nimmt. Damit sind die zwei global relevanten Tendenzen benannt, die wir am Beispiel Vietnams behandeln: Neben dem sozialen Bauen eröffnet das klimagerechte Entwerfen der Architektur den Weg zu einer neuen gesellschaftlichen Relevanz.

Markus Grob erzählt die Geschichte der Architektur im 20. Jahrhundert entlang einer Reihe von Einfamilienhäusern. Ihre entweder steilen oder flachen Dächer analysiert er als aus dem 19. Jahrhundert hervorgegangene Formen, deren Gegeneinander in einem „Dächerstreit“ mündet. Damit wirft er einen bisher nicht dagewesenen, neuen Blick auf die Baugeschichte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts und auf seine Siedlungsformen von Vorstadt, Speckgürtel und Agglomeration. „Merkwürdig, wie diese beiden Dachformen im vergangenen Jahrhundert gegeneinander ausgespielt wurden, […] entsprachen [sie] folglich zumindest anfangs verwandten Lebensvorstellungen, bevor sich diese zu gegensätzlichen gesellschaftlichen Programmen auseinanderentwickelten und die Dächer zu Zeichen im Streit um die Vorherrschaft machten, der im Entsetzlichen mündete. Die Scham danach wollt nichts mehr wissen von allem, was darunter ausgeheckt worden ist: so blieben Dächer schließlich als leere Formen zurück und dem jeweils eigenen Kalkül der Bewohner, Entwerfer und Kreditgeber überlassen. Und doch gibt es noch beide Formen, weiterhin sind sie von den Vorlieben getragen, ist ihre Wirkung nicht aufgehoben, nur ist diese unbestimmt geworden.“ (Markus Grob) 17 auf Spaziergängen selber gemachte Fotografien bilden den Auftakt einer ersten Untersuchung. Very Nearly Almost is a UK-based independent magazine printed quarterly which features interviews with some of the world’s best urban artists, illustrators and photographers. Vast portions of the landscape are claimed and governed by spaces of storage, their maintenance, and the goods that move through them—or remain buried within them indefinitely. This issue of Harvard Design Magazine investigates and unpacks the contents, containers, and systems of storage that organize our world. Storage is the aggregation and containment of the material and immaterial stuff of culture; but also the safeguarding—or hoarding—of energy and tools for some imagined future purpose. How does all this stuff mask or overcompensate for economic and ecological bankruptcy? Is storage about greed or need? Even as we attempt to reduce and recycle, the stuff that we dispose of also needs to be stored. Where do we put it? Our planet is now a saturated receptacle. This warehouse is full, and we’re all inside it.

Auf welche Art und Weise Spielregeln ihren partizipativen Designprozess informieren, verraten Roel Wouters und Luna Maurer von Studio Moniker in einem Interview, das Sie als einen von drei Artikeln online lesen können. Der Realität im Spiel kommt das Entwicklungsstudio Crytek in ihrem neuesten Virtual Reality-Spiel „Robinson: The Journey“ näher. The extent to which economic value is placed on knowledge today forces us to reconsider its social role and our relation to it. Research, the general category for processes of knowledge production, has become omnipresent in both education and practice. Today it’s not so important what you know but rather how you think. Progress, in this sense, is predicated by critical reflection on ways of knowing and disciplinary traditions of thought. Machines have long been integral to architectural discourse. Vitruvius concluded his ten books with a meditation on war machines, and Le Corbusier published on his industrial muses just over 100 years ago. Yet something is different today. We have always learned from machines, but now, machines learn. Machinic processes, computational algorithms and artificial intelligence have never been so proximate, direct, and intimate to daily life, yet we are many steps removed from their practical operations. This issue of Volume seeks to take one small step in the direction towards understanding the contemporary relevance of machines for architecture, and one giant leap for mankind.

Gratuitous Type is an occasional pamphlet of typographic smut. Celebrating the letter in all its forms, the magazine highlights exciting contemporary design and art from around the world, offering a voyeuristic look into the practices of their favourite letter-makers. The first in a series of half issues created to examine tangential subjects introduced in our full issues but not explored in detail in their pages. In Issue 4.5, we reunite with design collective Letterproeftuin; examine the impact of Enzo Mari’s work in the wake of contemporary open-source design; chat with Andrea Hyde and Eric Price; celebrate Corita Kent's ever-inspiring Rules and Hints for Students and Teachers; and examine the rise of the designer as shopkeeper.

Noon is a magazine that explores the space between art, commerce and digital culture, investigating what it means to live in an Altermodern world. Thematically focused, each issue features a collection of fashion, photography, visual art, short stories, profiles and critical text. It has been described as “the magazine that knits together art and fashion with the same subversive strength of vision that Juergen Teller brought to the genre – an organic, hazy and candid aesthetic that Noon are out on their own in achieving” (MagCulture) and a publication that “quickly established itself as a beautifully produced magazine that subverts tradition and places innovative collaboration at its forefront” (Dazed Digital). Noon rejects standard editorial models and instead aims to cultivate a true creative exchange between editor and contributor. Celebrating the luxury of print, paper and ink, the magazine combines a large format with an experimental approach to aesthetics and material, challenging the politics of mass production.

Nach über 30 Jahren kehrte ARCH+ Chefredakteur Anh-Linh Ngo für dieses Heft erstmals in sein Geburtsland zurück. Jenes Land, das sich als Präfix eines Krieges in den Sprachgebrauch eingenistet hat. Jener Krieg, vor dessen politischen Folgen seine Familie floh, als er noch ein Kind war. Als Flüchtlingskind kam er vor 33 Jahren nach Deutschland, als „Kontingentflüchtling“, wie es damals im schönsten Bürokratendeutsch hieß. Über diese Wortschöpfung wären heute viele froh, sind doch (Ober-)Grenzen wieder en vogue. Angesichts der spürbaren Verschiebungen und Relativierungen, die die Globalisierung mit sich bringt, sehnen sich viele Menschen wieder nach festen Grenzen und klaren kulturellen Identitäten. Der gegenwärtige Auftrieb „identitärer Bewegungen“ ist ein Zeichen dafür. Wir leben in Zeiten, die bestimmt sind von Angst – Angst vor Überfremdung, vor dem Verlust der „eigenen“ Kultur. In diesem Kontext könnte man die beiden Ausgaben über Vietnam, von denen dies die erste ist, aus der individuellen Perspektive des Migranten als eine klischeehafte Suche nach den eigenen Wurzeln und aus politischer Sicht als Versuch einer lokalen Identitätskonstruktion missverstehen. Doch gerade vor dem Hintergrund der gegenwärtigen politischen Krise sind beide Hefte explizit als die Suche nach einem Ausweg aus den Kulturalisierungsfallen zu verstehen, die derzeit überall lauern. Um hier die Hauptaussage vorwegzunehmen: Identität ist kein Nullsummenspiel, bei dem sich das „Fremde“ und das „Eigene“ gegenseitig verdrängen. Die Entwurfsansätze der vorgestellten Büros entstehen in der Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen sozialen Problemen und lokalen kulturellen Praktiken. Sie sind in ihren Ergebnissen spezifisch, ohne ihre universalen Grundprinzipien zu verleugnen. Auf der Suche nach einem zukunftsfähigen Weg wendet sich diese Avantgarde wieder heimischen Materialien, traditionellen Bauweisen und Typologien zu, um Alternativen zum Einsatz fehleranfälliger und teurer Technik anzubieten. Ihre Zeitgenossenschaft beziehen die präsentierten Projekte zum einen aus dem freien Umgang mit vorgefundenen Traditionen, zum anderen aus konkreten Alltagspraktiken. Doch auch internationale Einflüsse wie etwa von Anna Heringer, Diébédo Francis Kéré oder der japanischen Architektur werden herangezogen. Auf diese Weise verorten die Architekten ihre Entwürfe, ohne dabei kulturalistisch zu argumentieren; zugleich stellen sie sich in einen globalen Denkzusammenhang, ohne an spezifischer Ausdrucksweise zu verlieren. Genau daran wird das zweite Heft anknüpfen und die vietnamesische Architektur als Teil einer globalen Kultur diskutieren. Sich als Teil einer gemeinsamen Kultur zu begreifen heißt, sich voneinander anregen zu lassen, voneinander zu lernen. Was könnten wir von der vietnamesischen Architektur lernen? So viel sei schon einmal verraten: Die Einfachheit im Detail, um die Architektur wieder in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen.

The seven designers participating to the first issue of Obliquite, explore the way objects come to life, their significations, their narratives. They dissect our society of spectacle, and transgress it. They play with memory, myths, fetishes, the hidden mechanisms and historiography of objects. They are not focusing on the function of objects. Instead, they explore the narratives and various ways in which our lives are conditioned by design.

The cover was shot by Jack Davison as part of a commission that profiles the work of graphic designer John Morgan. Inside, features include an interview with graphic design legend Milton Glaser, illustrator Jean Jullien, exclusive images of TroTro drivers in Ghana by photographer Charlie Kwai, a tribute to the architect Zaha Hadid with a portrait and illustrations by Romy Blumel and a gallery of the heroes of Rio 2016 sculpted by Wilfrid Wood. Throughout the magazine there are articles covering the work of more than 30 international artists including photographer Blaise Cepis, printmaker Sophy Hollington, and graphic designers Neubau to name but a few.
