This book is the first to document the remarkable history of the International Institute of Design (IID), an independent school of architecture founded and directed by Alvin Boyarsky from 1970 – 72, and highlights a pivotal episode in the career of Boyarsky, best known for his subsequent role as chairman of the Architectural Association (1971 – 90). Launched in the wake of the institutional upheavals that had swept schools of architecture during the late 1960s, the IID introduced an alternative model of architectural instruction: one that brought together a range of teaching methods, design strategies, theories and projects alongside an international assortment of protagonists. In Progress details this short-lived experiment through a trove of previously unpublished material, and reveals how three informal architectural gatherings, held over three successive summers, can be seen to have established not only a network of architects and discourses, but a new model for architectural education.

Disobedient Bodies: JW Anderson at The Hepworth Wakefield has been published alongside the exhibition of the same name, curated by JW Anderson and opening The Hepworth Wakefield in March 2017. The book – made in a close collaboration between Jonathan Anderson, Andrew Bonacina and OK-RM – acts as an alternative exhibition space in which the pairings and combinations that unfold within The Hepworth’s galleries come in to play with images from Anderson’s collaborative photographic projects with Jamie Hawkesworth. The book object comprises a series of interleaved sections amassing 142 pages and featuring works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi, Eileen Gray, Sarah Lucas, Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Dior, Helmut Lang and many more, alongside contributions from Anderson’s own collections.

The mid-1960s witnessed a boom in underground and selfpublished works. Hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing not only allowed for the production of small, lowcost print runs but also promote a unique aesthetic: using wild mock-ups, »messianic amateurs« combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic strips. The typography consciously frees itself, in parallel to a liberalization of linguistic and visual forms of expression in the name of a new »sensibility«. This book (which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Weserburg in Bremen) is the first to present the underground and self-published works that came out of West Germany in such depth, while also showing the internationalcontext in which they emerged: not as an anecdotal history but as an attempt to tap into the aesthetic cosmos of a Do-It-Yourself rebellion, one that also challenges us to take a new look at the current boom in »independent publishing«, the risograph aesthetic, and so on.

Paint & Polish sources visual inspiration from the microeconomic culture of Hispanic and African-American nail artists in the Northwest Side of Chicago. It fosters engagement with these artists by highlighting their work and collaborating with them. Included are oral histories, conversations with various nail artists, their portraits by Helen Maurene Cooper, and photography from their business. By documenting the community, this set of materials engages with it profoundly. Published as part of ‘Motion’, an exhibition by Dutch artist and graphic designer Karel Martens at Kunstverein München, this book is the seventh instalment of the ‘Companion’ series produced by the Kunstverein and Roma Publications. With concept and design by Julie Peeters, the greater part of the book’s content is derived from the video ‘Not for Resale’, a sequence of photographs of the array of images and objects found on the artist’s studio wall, taken in 2000. Material from two other videos, ‘Lost & Found’ (2004) and ‘Tol’ (2008), is also included, along with a transcription of a conversation between Martens and Chris Fitzpatrick, director of the Kunstverein.

Dafi Kühne is a Swiss designer who works with analogue and digital techniques to produce fresh and unique letterpress-printed posters. Using very different kinds of tools — from a computer to a pantograph — for his compositions, he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Dafi Kühne embraces the labor involved in the entire process of creating a poster, from initial idea to finished product. “Ur-Geräusch” (Primal Sound) is the title of an essay by Rainer Maria Rilke, which was published in 1919 and subsequently lent its name to the exhibition by Carsten Nicolai that was mounted last year at the Kunstverein Braunschweig. In the text Rilke wrote about the phonograph, which was invented almost 140 years ago as a precursor of the record player and was the first device capable of reproducing sound. Paralleling this technical innovation, Nicolai finds visual forms for the recording and playback of sound waves. For his installation at the Kunstverein Braunschweig he had Jule Böwe narrate Rilke’s “Primal Sound”. In the artist’s book he contrasts the envelope curve — the visualized image of her voice — with the printed text. Pictures of his installations are tucked away as a “hidden track” on the inside of the Japanese binding.

Enamoured of decorative ornament, posing a challenge to all-powerful modernism, and drawing inspiration from the realm of architecture, the provocative designs of Italian group Memphis (1981–1988) caused something of a stir. Less Is a Bore: Reflections on Memphis contextualizes the creative universe of the designers around Ettore Sottsass in relation to the works of artists Raymond Barion, Eva Berendes, Barbara Kasten, Graham Little, and Tobias Rehberger. The book outlines their shared stylistic history in design and art, which has been given impetus by the phenomena of mass culture as well as by fashion and the history of culture and is reflected in an obsessive enthusiasm for the expressive possibilities of surfaces. In a meteoric rise to fame, the Los Angeles–based Haas Brothers have garnered international accolades for their set design and props for print and video, one-of-a-kind fashion works and their highly original furniture and object designs. Their exploration and mastery of materials—ranging from brass, bronze, porcelain and fur to highly technical resins and polyurethane—matched with their insatiable curiosity and remarkable visual intelligence, sets them apart as designers. This monograph—the first on the brothers—focuses on their projects, including their Hex series of handworked bronze tile pieces, their Accretion series of unique ceramic vessels, the Beast series of bronze and wool anthropomorphic furniture and a new body of works that engages ideas about arousal and eroticism in playful, sculptural forms. The book features color photographs as well as writings and drawings by Simon and Nikolai Haas that convey their humor and eloquence while illuminating the inspirations, theories and processes behind the works, plus images of the Haas Brothers’ studio and practice. Twin brothers Nikolai and Simon Haas (born 1984), known as The Haas Brothers, got their start in design by studying stone carving and construction under their father in their hometown of Austin, Texas. In September 2010, the brothers were commissioned to collaborate on a project by renowned architectural firm Johnston Marklee, at Sony Studios in Los Angeles, and “The Haas Brothers” as a studio practice was born. In the two years since, the brothers have continued to grow their design studio and spend their time prototyping forms and experimenting with materials, surface textures and processes. In 2013 they created a limited edition furniture collection for Versace. In their current design works, The Haas Brothers explore aesthetic and formal themes related to nature, science fiction, psychedelia and color theory.

Historische Modelle und aktuelle Positionen aus dem Bauhaus, Edition Bauhaus 49 “How are we to live in a way that is healthy and economical?” One answer to this question was provided by Ernst Jahn’s film of the same name Wie wohnen wir gesund und wirtschaftlich? (1926–28), which showed the kitchen in the Gropius House complete with all the latest domestic appliances it was equipped with. The Dessau Masters’ Houses were not only showcases of “new living” (Neues Wohnen) but also places where modern methods of housekeeping could be demonstrated. The topical relevance of this question was discussed at the 2015 Haushaltsmesse, an international trade fair on the art of housekeeping and budgeting. The publication Housekeeping in the Modern Age, which takes a documentary approach to this subject, now brings together these different viewpoints eyeing the question through the prism of the problems we face today. In the face of climate change and dwindling resources, the externalized costs of running a modern household are back on the (kitchen) table. Jahrhunderts unseren Alltag so sehr beeinflusst wie die De-Stijl-Gruppe um Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) und Theo van Doesburg. Mondrian, mit Wassily Kandinsky und Kasimir Malewitsch einer der Gründerväter malerischer Abstraktion, schuf streng geometrische Gemälde, die heute als Ikonen der Moderne gelten. Ihre charakteristische Struktur aus einem schwarzen Raster, in das Flächen in den Grundfarben eingepasst sind, führt längst ein reges Eigenleben in Kunst und Mode, Werbung und Populärkultur. Im Zentrum der Publikation steht zum einen Mondrians Weg in die Abstraktion – von den Anfängen im Umfeld der neoimpressionistischen Luministen bis hin zu seiner neoplastizistischen Periode. Imagine how future archaeologists will discover countless things we have thrown away: plastic and metal objects, discarded electronics, synthetic textiles, and other items that do not easily decompose; the leftovers of an age of rampant, imperishable objects. Today, in an economic system that revolves around producing and consuming such things, we now face how to deal with them in the challenges that lie ahead. The intrinsic design ideologies of sustainability and social responsibility are often not new. This book presents a history of socially committed design strategies within the Western tradition, from William Morris to Victor Papanek, and from VKhUTEMAS to FabLab.

Hippie Modernism examines the art, architecture and design of the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s. The catalogue surveys the radical experiments that challenged societal norms while proposing new kinds of technological, ecological and political utopia. It includes the counter-design proposals of Victor Papanek and the anti-design polemics of Global Tools; the radical architectural visions of Archigram, Superstudio, Haus-Rucker-Co and ONYX; the installations of Ken Isaacs, Joan Hills, Mark Boyle, Hélio Oiticica and Neville D'Almeida; the experimental films of Jordan Belson, Bruce Conner and John Whitney; posters and prints by Emory Douglas, Corita Kent and Victor Moscoso; documentation of performances by the Diggers and the Cockettes; publications such as Oz and The Whole Earth Catalog; books by Marshall McLuhan and Buckminster Fuller; and much more. While the turbulent social history of the 1960s is well known, its cultural production remains comparatively under-examined. In this substantial volume, scholars explore a range of practices such as radical architectural and anti-design movements emerging in Europe and North America; the print revolution in the graphic design of books, posters and magazines; and new forms of cultural practice that merged street theater and radical politics. Through a profusion of illustrations, interviews with figures including Gerd Stern and Michael Callahan of USCO, Gunther Zamp Kelp of Haus-Rucker-Co, Ken Isaacs, Ron Williams and Woody Rainey of ONYX, Franco Raggi of Global Tools, Tony Martin, Clark Richert and Richard Kallweit of Drop City, and new scholarly writings, this book explores the conjunction of the countercultural ethos and the modernist desire to fuse art and life.

Alle Titel werden in chronologischer Reihenfolge vorgestellt. Neben Fotomontagen und Buchumschlägen, Broschüren, Titelseiten sowie anderen Druckerzeugnissen beinhaltet ein gesondertes Kapitel mindestens zwei Drittel der mit Fotomontagen Heartfields gedruckten Hefte der Arbeiter Illustrierten Zeitung (AIZ) und der Volks-Illustrierten (VI).  Die einzelnen Arbeiten sind bibliografisch erfasst und mit Erläuterungen versehen. Letztere befassen sich etwa mit dem jeweiligen Entstehungskontext, dem Wiederaufgreifen und Weiterentwickeln von Tendenzen und Motiven innerhalb seines Werkes, den Quellen der verwendeten Fotografien, dem Verhältnis zu anderen Strömungen der Grafikgestaltung und nicht zuletzt dem Zusammenspiel von Umschlaggestaltung und Text. Deux fois par ans, Initiales, revue produite et éditée par l’Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (ENSBA) de Lyon, esquisse les contours d’une galerie de « portraits en creux » en s’organisant autour de « figures-source », existantes ou fictives. Des figures d’artistes, philosophes, écrivains, architectes ou cinéastes dont le dénominateur commun est qu’elles ont « fait école » dans leur discipline et au-delà, dans les champs qu’elles ont investis ou traversés. L’œuvre, la pensée mais plus encore les méthodes déployées, les pistes explorées (et parfois avortées) ou les réseaux créés par cette figure de référence servent de sous-texte ou de script à chacune des livraisons. Réunissant, à partir d’une même figure, une série de contributions centrifuges, Initiales met ainsi en jeu un usage de la source et une expérience du temps qui ne sont ni ceux de l’historien ni ceux du scientifique, mais qui sont à l’œuvre dans le travail de l’art et qui sont au cœur de la réflexion menée depuis 2004 par le groupe de recherche ACTH (Art contemporain et temps de l’histoire) de l’ENSBA Lyon. Designer, sculpteur et peintre, Nathalie du Pasquier (née à Bordeaux en 1957) fut l’une des femmes du groupe Memphis qui, au début des années 1980, su faire bouger, autour d’Ettore Sottssas, les lignes du bon goût et les frontières de la société de consommation. Installée depuis à Milan depuis 1979, Nathalie du Pasquier a par la suite repris une intense pratique d’atelier et entretenu des rapports de bon voisinage avec ces objets du quotidien qui ont fait sa fortune pendant l’ère Memphis, et bien après, dans ses toiles aux compositions minimales ou ses modules géométriques. Cette capacité à circuler entre les formes et les pratiques, jusqu’à la « redécouverte » récente de son travail dans le champ de la mode qui a fait appel à ses services au milieu des années 2000 pour redessiner des motifs post-Memphis, est sans doute ce qui caractérise le mieux cette artiste atypique née en 1957. Et explique sans doute pourquoi son travail, jusqu’à récemment encore, semblait voué à une certaine marginalité.
