Man nannte Willy Fleckhaus (1925–1983) den „teuersten Bleistift Deutschlands“ und Deutschlands ersten Art Director. Wie kein Zweiter hat er die visuelle Kultur der noch jungen Bundesrepublik in den sechziger, siebziger und achtziger Jahre geprägt. Er verschmolz die Ratio der Schweizer Grafik mit der leidenschaftlichen Emotionalität des amerikanischen Magazindesigns. International bekannt wurde er durch sein bahnbrechendes Design der Jugendzeitschrift Twen, die durch ihr inhaltliches Konzept, großzügige Gestaltung, moderne Typografie und Fotografie gleich mehrere Generationen prägte. Fleckhaus arbeitete mit bedeutenden Fotografen seiner Zeit wie z.B. Will McBride, Thomas Höpker, Hans Feurer, Charlotte March, Ulrich Mack, Guido Mangold, Stefan Moses, Reinhart Wolf. Neben seiner Arbeit für Twen entwickelte er auch Layoutkonzepte für die Illustrierte Quick (in ihren guten Jahren) oder das Supplement der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung (ab 1980), Buchreihen wie die in den Farben des Regenbogens gehaltene Edition Suhrkamp oder die Taschenbücher des Insel Verlages. Die Autoren Michael Koetzle und Carsten Wolff (der mit seinem Büro das Buch kongenial gestaltete) schreiben endlich die umfassende Monografie über einen der prägenden wichtigsten Gestalter des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Buch erscheint zu den Ausstellungen im MAK Köln, Museum für Kunst- und Gewerbe, Hamburg und Villa Stuck, München, weitere Ausstellungen in Planung. Willy Fleckhaus (1925-1983) was one of the most innovative, creative and influential graphic designers in postwar Germany. He became internationally known for his groundbreaking work on the lifestyle magazine Twen, which attracted generations of readers with its generous layouts, modern typography and distinctive choice of house photographers such as (among others) Will McBride, Charlotte March, Guido Mangold, Reinhart Wolf. He invented the position of the „art director“, when this job description did not yet exist in Germany and earned himself the nickname of “Germany’s most expensive pencil”. Beside his longterm involvement with Twen he worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazine (from 1980 onwards), the magazine Quick, developped book series such as Edition Suhrkamp with its famous rainbow-coloured covers, exhibition designs for the Photokina trade fair in Cologne, and the logo of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk broadcasting corporation. The book, the first comprehensive monograph on Willy Fleckhaus in an international edition, includes texts by Michael Koetzle and Carsten Wolff (who also took over the book design), both long time collectors of Fleckhaus work samples. Published to coincide with the travelling exhibition at MAK Cologne, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg and Villa Stuck, Munich, further venues planned.

In 1949, the competition »Die besten Plakate des Jahres« (The Best Posters of the Year) took place for the first time in the newly founded Federal Republic of Germany. Designers could enter poster designs from the past year, a jury of experts awarded prizes for the best works. From 1966 onwards, there was such an annual competition in the GDR too. Many of the commended works from that time are today amongst the canon of German and international design history. The book tells the eventful history of the com­peti­tions and their changing shape over the decades. Muita Animação showcases a selection of Portuguese party posters that are very prominent in the local landscape because of their bold design as well as their unique production method: Printed on plastic and mounted on streetposts and trees, they mostly survive the date they announce and therefore can even be seen on Google Streetview. Zurich Artist Noël Fischer started to collect these posters a few years back and has now — together with design studio Hammer — published them in this whimsical A3-sized book. This collection might as well be Jan Tschichold’s worst nightmare.

Edition Bauhaus 46 When Dessau was bombed in early 1945, the Director’s House and Moholy-Nagy’s Master House were reduced to rubble as well. After the Dessau Masters’ Houses – epitome of the 20th-century artists’ colony – had been restored to their original state in the 1990s, a debate began on the reconstruction of the two houses destroyed in the war. In 2010, after consultation with the British star architect David Chipperfield, the decision was made to recreate the Master Houses of Gropius and Moholy-Nagy using contemporary means, rather than rebuilding them 1:1. And so they have now been reconstructed on the basis of designs by the Berlin firm Bruno-Fioretti-Marquez, as innovative reductions and abstractions of the original houses. This volume describes the chequered history of the Dessau Masters’ Houses, presenting the reconstructed buildings for the first time in book form, with photographs by Armin Linke and Heidi Specker.
