Published as part of ‘Motion’, an exhibition by Dutch artist and graphic designer Karel Martens at Kunstverein München, this book is the seventh instalment of the ‘Companion’ series produced by the Kunstverein and Roma Publications. With concept and design by Julie Peeters, the greater part of the book’s content is derived from the video ‘Not for Resale’, a sequence of photographs of the array of images and objects found on the artist’s studio wall, taken in 2000. Material from two other videos, ‘Lost & Found’ (2004) and ‘Tol’ (2008), is also included, along with a transcription of a conversation between Martens and Chris Fitzpatrick, director of the Kunstverein.

Dafi Kühne is a Swiss designer who works with analogue and digital techniques to produce fresh and unique letterpress-printed posters. Using very different kinds of tools — from a computer to a pantograph — for his compositions, he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Dafi Kühne embraces the labor involved in the entire process of creating a poster, from initial idea to finished product. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary for how to communicate through type and form in a truly contemporary way. Der aufgeschriebene Moment gerann unter ihren Händen zum Kunstwerk. Die montageartige Biografie begibt sich auf Spurensuche und stellt eine faszinierend-androgyne Frauenfigur in den Mittelpunkt. Aus großbürgerlichem Hamburger Hause stammend, erlebte sie ihre künstlerische Erweckung im New York der 1960er-Jahre und machte schließlich eine steile internationale Künstlerkarriere. Erzählte Passagen, Gesprächsprotokolle und Interviews mit Weggefährten wie Lawrence Weiner, Carl Andre, Joseph Kosuth, Kasper König oder Rainer Langhans wechseln einander ab. Diese persönliche Perspektive macht nicht zuletzt auch die künstlerische Entwicklung anschaulich und erleichtert den Zugang zum hermetischen Werk Darbovens.

Photography is a peculiar medium, an idiosyncratic mix of strengths and weaknesses. It is extremely good at documenting our everyday reality, and yet it is only capable of capturing the mute surface of our world. It merely shows the external appearance of things, not their essence. This is a question of interpretation, a matter for the viewer’s discretion. To compensate for this failing, photographs are mostly presented in an explicit context, often with explanatory captions. Tillesen’s “superficial images” also document our everyday reality, in combination with titles that seem to offer an explanation of their content. But on closer examination it becomes clear that neither the photographs nor the captions are reliable. The book appears in conjunction with the solo exhibition Peter Tillessen — Superficial Images, Centre de la photographie Genève, 25, November 2016 to 22, January 2017.

“Ur-Geräusch” (Primal Sound) is the title of an essay by Rainer Maria Rilke, which was published in 1919 and subsequently lent its name to the exhibition by Carsten Nicolai that was mounted last year at the Kunstverein Braunschweig. In the text Rilke wrote about the phonograph, which was invented almost 140 years ago as a precursor of the record player and was the first device capable of reproducing sound. Paralleling this technical innovation, Nicolai finds visual forms for the recording and playback of sound waves. For his installation at the Kunstverein Braunschweig he had Jule Böwe narrate Rilke’s “Primal Sound”. In the artist’s book he contrasts the envelope curve — the visualized image of her voice — with the printed text. Pictures of his installations are tucked away as a “hidden track” on the inside of the Japanese binding.

Enamoured of decorative ornament, posing a challenge to all-powerful modernism, and drawing inspiration from the realm of architecture, the provocative designs of Italian group Memphis (1981–1988) caused something of a stir. Less Is a Bore: Reflections on Memphis contextualizes the creative universe of the designers around Ettore Sottsass in relation to the works of artists Raymond Barion, Eva Berendes, Barbara Kasten, Graham Little, and Tobias Rehberger. The book outlines their shared stylistic history in design and art, which has been given impetus by the phenomena of mass culture as well as by fashion and the history of culture and is reflected in an obsessive enthusiasm for the expressive possibilities of surfaces. The book classifies Memphis in the context of the design, art, and pop culture of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Book is published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation Dusseldorf (29 October 2016 – 11 February 2017).

Dies ist die erste ausführliche Darstellung von Geschichte, Einflüssen und Wirkungen der ‘Werkstatt für Photographie’, die 1976 vom Berliner Fotografen Michael Schmidt an der Volkshochschule Kreuzberg gegründet wurde. In jenen Jahren entstanden in Westdeutschland Strukturen, die der Emanzipation der Fotografie als Kunstform den Weg ebnen sollten. Eine zentrale Rolle in dieser Entwicklung spielten die Städte Berlin, Hannover und Essen. Zu jener Zeit durchlief das Medium Fotografie einen grundlegenden Wandel, es entwickelte sich eine eigenständige Form künstlerischer Autorschaft im Bereich des Dokumentarischen. Aus verschiedenen Perspektiven erzählt diese Publikation die Geschichte der deutschen Fotografie der 1970er- und 80er-Jahre mit ihren internationalen Bezügen, ihre Protagonisten und Netzwerken und fügt ihr ein weiteres, bisher in der Geschichtsschreibung wenig beachtetes Kapitel hinzu.

Reproductive rights is a matter similar to drugs – whatever needs to be said has been said, is being continuously said, the evidence has been there for a long time, it is crystal clear, and yet nothing changes, and likely not much will change in the near future, as there is too much at stake. This issue is an attempt to re-present academic material (and/or pure perversion) which we have stumbled upon through our dedicated research.

Sie entstehen als kleine Verklumpungen im Auge und beeinträchtigen die Sicht nur gering. Erst wenn das Bewusstsein sich auf sie richtet, werden sie zu einem Schleier vor der Welt. Flüchtig hingekritzelte Gedanken, Rückgriffe aufs eigene Fotoarchiv oder seltsame Raumaufnahmen aus dem Internet dienen der Künstlerin Romy Julia Kroppe in »fliegende mücken/mouches volantes« als Materialien anhaltender Neukonstruktionen. Kopieren, Einscannen; Rückbau, Manipulation und Korrektur. Mit Markern und Pinseln werden zerstückelte Fotokopien überarbeitet, in anderen Bildern treffen schnelle zeichnerische Gesten auf langwierig ausgearbeitete Flächen. Ein Angriff auf das Sehen, das idealerweise statisch sein sollte; aber nicht psychedelisch, keine rauschhaften Neuinterpretationen, sondern als Abbildungen für das Handicap des Erkennens in einer multivisuellen Welt.

Far from being a rational enterprise, its lack of rules, hierarchy, order—or concept for that matter—make it expressly and brazenly as personal and biased as possible. 'FAQ' reflects the obsessive mannerism of its authors. Clare Rojas is an internationally shown artist, currently based in San Francisco and is considered to be part of the Mission School. She is “known for creating powerful folk-art-inspired tableaus that tackle traditional gender roles.” She works in a variety of media, including painting, installations, video, street art, and children’s books. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and previously attended the Rhode Island School of Design. Referencing West Coast modernism, Quaker art, Native American textiles, Byzantine mosaics, and Outsider art, Rojas tells stories through painting, installations, and video. Often her narratives concern relationships between the sexes and among humans and animals, in their struggle to find harmony and balance. Many works quietly celebrate the traditional strengths of women, depicting them like Russian nesting dolls in conventional roles without critical undertones or hints of sexual exploitation. Quilt-like patterns in vivid colors accentuate the folk art-inspired scenes present in some works, while simple geometric forms and stark interiors evoke Bauhaus design in others. Recently, Rojas has focused her attention on the abstract shapes formed by architecture and shadow that dominate interior spaces, producing colorful, precise, abstract compositions on stretched linen.

Symbolic Exchange, designed by OK-RM, was published in September 2016 after the 2015 Bold Tendencies exhibition. It includes interviews with artists Richard Wentworth, Metahaven and åyr, as well as additional texts and photography from the exhibition.

Historische Modelle und aktuelle Positionen aus dem Bauhaus, Edition Bauhaus 49 “How are we to live in a way that is healthy and economical?” One answer to this question was provided by Ernst Jahn’s film of the same name Wie wohnen wir gesund und wirtschaftlich? (1926–28), which showed the kitchen in the Gropius House complete with all the latest domestic appliances it was equipped with. The Dessau Masters’ Houses were not only showcases of “new living” (Neues Wohnen) but also places where modern methods of housekeeping could be demonstrated. The topical relevance of this question was discussed at the 2015 Haushaltsmesse, an international trade fair on the art of housekeeping and budgeting. The publication Housekeeping in the Modern Age, which takes a documentary approach to this subject, now brings together these different viewpoints eyeing the question through the prism of the problems we face today. In the face of climate change and dwindling resources, the externalized costs of running a modern household are back on the (kitchen) table. The book is a compilation of essays by internationally renowned anthropologists, economists, artists, architects, historians, and cultural studies experts and also contains a wealth of historical documents and photographs. Spring is a self-published newspaper which contains large format graphics of abandoned factories in Czech Republic. The cascade of destructions of the images takes them beyond their concrete stories – as if they were memories of things that have never happened.
