Roberto Burle Marx (1909–1994) remains one of the most important landscape architects in the history of the field. His distinctive and widely acclaimed work has been featured and referenced in numerous sources, yet few of Burle Marx’s own words have been published. This collection of a dozen of Burle Marx’s lectures, most of which have never before been available in English, fills that void. Delivered on international speaking tours, they address topics such as Concepts in Landscape Composition, Gardens and Ecology and The Problem of Garden Lighting. Their publication sheds light on Burle Marx’s distinctive ethic and aesthetic of landscape, as “the real art in living.” The lectures paint a picture of Burle Marx not just as a gardener, artist and botanist, but as a landscape architect whose ambition was to bring radical change to cities and society. “In 1978 as the school year drew to a close two of my high school students who had tickets to a Rolling Stones Concert approached me and asked if I would like to go with them to the concert. After discussing it with my wife Nancy, who thought it was a good idea and promising photo opportunity, I was enthusiastic to go for the experience. My students were delighted that I’d be joining them. Besides they needed me to drive us to Philadelphia from Long Island, New York. So off we went for whatever adventure might lay ahead. And I carefully packed my three 35mm cameras and plenty of b&w film to record the event. Recently, I was inspired to revisit the contact sheets from that one day and choose images that still spoke to me after so many years. Here are some of those photographs I took on June 17th at JFK Stadium surrounded by 90,000 Rolling Stones fans who were so open to my camera. One footnote… Bill and Chris, my two students, are still in touch and we are good friends to this day. I am forever grateful to them for our trip to that Rolling Stones Concert.”

British designer David Hicks (1929–1998) wowed the English decorating world with his bold geometric prints, electrifying color combinations, and quirky mix of antique and contemporary furniture. Thanks to his prodigious talents, his gift for publicity, and his connection to the royal family through his wife, Lady Pamela Mountbatten (cousin of Prince Philip), Hicks attracted an A-list clientele. For decades, Hicks documented every salient moment of his life in scrapbooks, amassing 24 volumes filled with press clippings, invitations, swatches of his signature textiles, sketches of interiors, magazine articles on his projects, and hundreds of photographs, mainly family snapshots but also his own photos of people like Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, and Andy Warhol. Many of the pages, now thumbed and foxed, are laid out in a collage style, and several are embellished with drawings and notes, revealing Hicks’s thoughts and sense of whimsy. Here, his son, Ashley Hicks, has chosen more than 325 of the best pages—providing not just a window into the extraordinary world of David Hicks but also a fascinating time capsule.

In it, he interrogated conceptual approaches to design in terms of both process and form. Thirty years later, in a lecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Rowe offered a reappraisal of his earlier work, describing ways in which the capacities of the digital age have changed the way we perceive and understand creative problem-solving in architectural design. In this new account of “design thinking” based on that memorable talk, Rowe charges that ideas about the “precision” and “incompleteness” of information have become exaggerated and made more manifest.
