Máj/My

spector books

The title Máj / My is inspired by the name of one of the largest department stores in Prague. In 1975 a store opened on Národní Trˇída, Avenue of the Nation: it was called “Máj” (May) up until the end of the communist regime. Although the spring month is known as Kveˇten colloquially, Máj is the older and more romantic word for it. The British supermarket chain Tesco took over the store in 1996 and renamed it “My” in 2009. The Czech Máj and the English “my” have exactly the same pronunciation. They sound identical, which was part of the neo-liberal marketing strategy of the new owner. Photographer Stephanie Kiwitt takes as her subject the life of people today, following the collapse of the communist regime in what is now the Czech Republic. The book brings together everyday observations and portraits of people who have come to terms with the new society.
