#13.5

Here and There Vol.13.5 is a record of “here and there no niwa”, a two days event in August 2018 to celebrate the release of Here and There Vol.13, the HYACINTH REVOLUTION issue, after three years of absence.

The event brought together people from various backgrounds: artists, writers, editors, gallerists, curators, shop owners, whoever has shown interest into this personal project. Since Nakako Hayashi initiated it in 2002, it has existed for more than seventeen years.

Nakako says “I started this magazine to convey the excitement and sensation that illuminate my mind when I encounter works made by artists who are contemporaries, such as Susan Cianciolo or Elein Fleiss or Mike Mills. Being Japanese, I always wanted to speak about my spontaneous reaction to their work. I felt I needed to tell someone what I had witnessed. At the same time I was trying to invent a new form of journalism because traditional journalism never fitted them. That was how I started making “here and there”. To celebrate its 13th issue, I planned an event featuring encounters, spontaneity, gatherings, and a spirit of art.”

With support of such artists as Teppei Kaneuji and PUGMENT in particular, this event had been planned since just one month before the magazine release in July 2018. Chidoribunka in Osaka, which had already been featuring Teppei’s permanent works of sculpture, seemed the only suitable place for the event. Nakako’s personal collection of Susan Cianciolo’s artworks and dresses, as well as a painting by Kim Gordon had been brought into Teppei’s installation rooms. He set them up just before the opening.
