#253 The Great Repair – Praktiken der Reparatur / A Catalog of Practices
The Great Repair” is an oxymoron. The title captures the convergence of two seemingly contradictory principles: the revolutionary ambition for systemic change and the evolutionary act of repair. The resulting aspiration is one that, despite its plea for a more cautious interaction with the world we live in, recognizes the profound scale of the necessary transformations lying ahead.
As German philosopher Eva von Redecker sees it, societal transformation is not primarily about the abolition of a social order, but also—and perhaps most importantly—about the replacement of its social practices. The transformation of a society can thus only be understood in the interrelationship of changes made to its politics and practices. This nexus is expressed in the two complementary ARCH+ issues The Great Repair: Politics for the Repair Society and The Great Repair: A Catalog of Practices (bilingual German/English), published as a companion to the exhibition of the same title, running from Oct. 14, 2023, to Jan. 14, 2024, at Akademie der Künste, Berlin.
