#239 – Ballads

Almost 700 snapshot-like portraits and an evocative music soundtrack constitute Nan Goldin’s The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.
A deeply personal photographic narrative formed in Boston, New York, Berlin, in the late 1970s, 1980s, and beyond.

Titled after a song in Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera, it is an opera in itself, capturing intimate moments of love and loss. Few works have impacted the world of photography like 'The Ballad'.

This summer, APERTURE returns to this iconic work and to Nan Goldin, with this special issue. Featuring an exclusive interview with Goldin as well as a section curated by the artist dedicated to her influences.
