The commencing Oscar season marks only five years since AnOther Magazine’s Spring/Summer 2019 cover star Lupita Nyong’o received the Academy Award for her break-through performance in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave. The short time that has followed has seen the actress redefine the meaning of celebrity: she is a perfectly gracious role model. With a lead role in Get Out director Jordan Peele’s new thriller, Us, due for release in March, Nyong’o talks to Lynette Nylander about the need for storytelling through art and culture at large. pring/Summer 2019 is Riccardo Tisci’s inaugural season at the helm of British heritage brand Burberry. Talking to Susannah Frankel in the earliest days of his reign, the designer outlines his hopes for his new Kingdom, championing “democracy, elegance, beauty, reality.” In a special 12-page fashion editorial, the photographer Theo Sion and stylist and Burberry collaborator Max Pearmain present his first collection, alongside the acclaimed designer’s first-hand observations on British style and design substance.
A new era was similarly heralded by the latest collection of fashion’s foremost innovator — our queen — Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo. As she tells us: “Regardless of what’s going on around us, I have no intention of dropping my stance, of being anything but true to my own ideas, even if it means I have a tough time.” Her highly personal approach frames the season as a whole: Edit of the Season, shot by Craig McDean and styled by Katie Shillingford, spans the distinctive work of today’s visionary designers and concludes with a rare interview with Kawakubo herself.
Hedi Slimane’s point of view is always very much his own. His first collection for Celine showcased a collaboration with multidisciplinary artist Christian Marclay: the fruits of a shared passion for music and sound that saw the latter’s onomatopeias translated into lavish sequin embroideries. In an exclusive artist’s folio, Marclay recontextualises those garments on paper through macro-scale photography.
For Art Project, Sterling Ruby presents the culmination of six years spent documenting the landscapes of California’s Supermax state prisons.
