No fashion, please! – die Verweigerung herkömmlicher Vorstellungen von Mode und Schönheit ist das zentrale Thema der 19 Einzelpräsentationen aus der internationalen zeitgenössischen Fotografieszene vorgestellt, die die fundamentale Beziehung zwischen Körper und (Be-)Kleidung, die Dialektik zwischen Form und Erscheinung des Körpers untersucht und hinterfragt. Die ausgewählten Künstler stehen in der Tradition der Körperkunst und arbeiten stark mit Querverweisen zu Installationen, Zeremonien und Ritualen.

AA Files is the Architectural Association School of Architecture’s journal of record and the successor to a long line of AA house journals (including titles such as AA Notes, AA Journal, Arena and AAQ) that began with the school’s founding in 1847. Launched in 1981 by the AA’s then chairman, Alvin Boyarsky, the journal appears twice a year and is sent out to members of the Architectural Association, individual subscribers and is distributed to a global network of bookshops. Since 2007 AA Files has been under the editorship of Thomas Weaver, the fourth of its editors, following Mary Wall, Mark Rappolt and David Terrien, who, with issue 57, initiated a redesign that saw the introduction of a new graphic design template, developed and still produced by the John Morgan studio, and a shift of focus in terms of its content towards more writerly models of scholarship, criticism and investigation, prompted not only by work, exhibitions and events from within the school, but by a rich and eclectic mix of architectural enquiry from all over the world.

At once radical, controversial and revered, Marina Abramovic (*1946 in Belgrade, Serbia) is one of the most discussed artists today. Famous for her groundbreaking performance works, she continues to expand the boundaries of art. The publication accompanying her first major retrospective in Europe gives an extensive overview of her work from the earliest years until today: film, photography, paintings and objects, installations and archival material. Since the early 1970s Marina Abramovic explores the intersection between performing and visual art in her work and, though rarely overtly political, poses questions of power and hierarchy. In addressing fundamental issues of our existence and seeking the core of notions like loss, memory, pain, endurance, and trust, she both provokes and moves us.

The publication Up Up—Stories of Johannesburg’s Highrises presents a selection of buildings in the inner city of Johannesburg. The focus lies on tall modernist towers that stood out at the time they were constructed. Witnesses to profound shifts in the political history of the metropolis, the buildings have gone through immense changes. They are documented in two distinct sections: One the one hand the formal architecture is presented with facts, floor plans, archival discoveries and contemporary images of the interior and the exterior. On the other hand each building is accompanied by a reportage or subjective essay on the inner workings of the building. Interviews with residents, research based texts on contemporary issues and independent contributions from invited writers, artists and photographers allow brief insights into the old and new lives of these towers.

This collection presents, for the first time in English, the best of Sasaki Maki’s work, mainly from alt-manga super magazine Garo. Drawn between 1967 and 1974, the fifteen stories here follow Sasaki’s groundbreaking exploration of collage methods in comics storytelling, weaving through references to R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, the Vietnam War, Andy Warhol, the Summer of Love, the Beatles, British humour, and the wacky world of Japanese consumerism. Ding Dong Circus demonstrates what manga fans already knew: that in Sasaki Maki, Japan can claim not only a pioneer in experimental comics, but one of the world’s masters of Pop Art and a trenchant avant-garde critic of the Sixties.

The Militant Image Reader versammelt acht sehr verschiedenartige Texte von TheoretikerInnen und KünstlerInnen aus Europa und Nordamerika, die über das gegenwärtige Verhältnis von künstlerischer Repräsentation und sozialen Veränderungen spekulieren. Die Publikation lässt sich auf das militante Bild ein, ohne es definieren zu wollen – möglicherweise vergänglich, flüchtig, flüsternd und am Rande der Sichtbarkeit zirkulierend, zeigt das militante Bild dennoch, dass neue Voraussetzungen der Bilder auf die radikal ungleichen Voraussetzungen der Gegenwart reagieren müssen.

In »Dialogues« führt die in Brüssel lebende deutsche Künstlerin Stephanie Kiwitt zum ersten Mal verschiedene Arbeiten der letzten Jahre, die sie in Form von Publikationen und Ausstellungsprojekten realisiert hat, in einem gemeinsamen Kontext zusammen. Neue Anschlüsse von Bild zu Bild entstehen, die es so nie gegeben hat, jedes neue Bild ist ein Sprung in der Zeit und im Raum, zwischen Belgien und Marseille, Prag und Gent … Oder handelt es sich eher um Kollisionen, denn um neue Anschlüsse? Anschnitte, Ausschnitte, Bilder, die über ihren Rand hinausreichen, die weiterführen, woanders hinführen – vielleicht in ein anderes Bild hinein? In besonderer Weise gelingt es Stephanie Kiwitt, ihre Bilder, Serien und Bücher an einer Grenze anzusiedeln, an der eine Beschreibung etwas eröffnet und ermöglicht, anstatt es auszuformulieren und abzuschließen, eine Grenze, an der die Bilder etwas zur Verfügung stellen anstatt es zu demonstrieren. Diese Öffnung ereignet sich nicht ohne zutun, sie muss in Gang gesetzt werden – durch Bilder, die nicht zufällig entstehen und auch nicht beiläufig, die aber nicht so tun, als wüssten sie es immer schon besser, Bilder, denen eine Zurückhaltung eigen ist, durch die sie einen Dialog eröffnen, sowohl zwischen den Bildern selbst als auch mit ihren BetrachterInnen.

Obwohl die Druckmaschine aussieht wie ein Kopiergerät, wird die Farbe ohne Anwendung von Hitze und Chemie auf das Papier gebracht, also energiesparend und ökologisch. Heute haben Grafiker und Designer aus der ganzen Welt den Risographen – und die entsprechenden Maschinen für ähnliche, schon fast vergessene Techniken wie die Mimeographie– für sich entdeckt und eine unerwartete Renaissance des analogen Druckens in Gang gesetzt. Auf eine sorgfältig recherchierte Einführung über Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft folgt ein Beitrag über wichtige Pioniere der aktuellen Risographie-Szene. Im Kapitel Risoworld werden besondere risographie-affine Verlage, Druckereien und Designstudios aus der ganzen Welt vorgestellt. Das Herzstück des Bandes sind wunderbare, ganz unterschiedliche Arbeiten wie Postkarten, Magazine, Poster, Flyer und experimentelle Druckerzeugnisse, die allesamt durch die Kraft der Farben der ganz eigenen Textur und vor allem der perfekt unperfekten Authentizität der Risographie begeistern.

Haifisch’s idiosyncratic, episodic comic chronicles the experiences of a young artist in his formative years, satirising the exclusive, ephemeral and frequently absurd world of fine art. Plagued by doubts and anxiety, the artist is confronted with constant setbacks punctuated by occasional, surprising glimpses of recognition. The Artist was printed by offset lithography at DeckersSnoeck in Belgium.

This book is the first to document the remarkable history of the International Institute of Design (IID), an independent school of architecture founded and directed by Alvin Boyarsky from 1970 – 72, and highlights a pivotal episode in the career of Boyarsky, best known for his subsequent role as chairman of the Architectural Association (1971 – 90). Launched in the wake of the institutional upheavals that had swept schools of architecture during the late 1960s, the IID introduced an alternative model of architectural instruction: one that brought together a range of teaching methods, design strategies, theories and projects alongside an international assortment of protagonists. In Progress details this short-lived experiment through a trove of previously unpublished material, and reveals how three informal architectural gatherings, held over three successive summers, can be seen to have established not only a network of architects and discourses, but a new model for architectural education.

Disobedient Bodies: JW Anderson at The Hepworth Wakefield has been published alongside the exhibition of the same name, curated by JW Anderson and opening The Hepworth Wakefield in March 2017. The book – made in a close collaboration between Jonathan Anderson, Andrew Bonacina and OK-RM – acts as an alternative exhibition space in which the pairings and combinations that unfold within The Hepworth’s galleries come in to play with images from Anderson’s collaborative photographic projects with Jamie Hawkesworth. The book object comprises a series of interleaved sections amassing 142 pages and featuring works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi, Eileen Gray, Sarah Lucas, Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Dior, Helmut Lang and many more, alongside contributions from Anderson’s own collections.

Dieses Heft passt ja wohl voll in die Zeit, denn mehr Schlamassel, als er derzeit von durchgeknallten Regierungschefs wie Putin, Trump der Erdogan angerichtet wird, gibt´s ja kaum. Gleichzeitig kann sich ein Schlamassel auch wieder auflösen, weswegen unser Heft bei aller Zustandsbeschreibung auch Trost spendet, Lösungen sucht und z.B. der Frage nachgeht, wie wahrscheinlich ein Attentat auf Trump ist.
