This issue of AnOther Magazine is an exploration of the heroic: the valiant, noble, audacious, brave. However one chooses to de ne the word, the world has rarely needed heroes – people to look up to, be inspired by, and learn from – more than they do today.

“An activist is someone who is not afraid to be truthful or vulnerable,” declares Amandla Stenberg in the Spring 2017 issue of Dazed. Stenberg is joined on the covers by fellow actor Ashton Sanders, whose poignant portrayal of black LGBT masculinity in Moonlight has struck an unprecedented chord. Celebrating twenty years of an agenda-setting powerhouse of contemporary style, design, and popular culture. Celebrated for discovering and promoting new artists, musicians, designers, and filmmakers, Dazed & Confused magazine has been a barometer of popular style and culture since its founding in London in 1991 by Jefferson Hack and the photographer Rankin. Edited by its founders, this daringly illustrated book immortalizes the magazine’s most enduring features, from legendary photo shoots and iconic covers to controversial interviews, and supplements them with outtakes, ephemera from the editors’ offices, original artwork, and contributions from the photographers, designers, and artists behind it all.

This issue comprises various outlooks on “perspective.” This might be taken to mean something as specific as a particular opinion or as general as an axonometric projection; in short, different ways and means of looking at the world. And so we find Vincenzo Latronico attempting to get in touch with E.T., a collection of Lucy McKenzie’s illusory quodlibets, a conversation between Jumana Manna and Robert Wyatt on art and ethics, along with other points of view from Sarah Demeuse, Mark de Silva, Jocelyn Penny Small, Abigail Reynolds, James Langdon & Mathew Kneebone, Johan Hjerpe, and the inimitable 9mother9horse9eyes9.

Beton is a contemporary printed gallery. It serves as a moodboard, visualising concepts, impressions and ideas within the creative medium. There is no final definition of Beton, that is the aesthetic. It is you, the observer, who defines it.

Dafi Kühne is a Swiss designer who works with analogue and digital techniques to produce fresh and unique letterpress-printed posters. Using very different kinds of tools — from a computer to a pantograph — for his compositions, he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Dafi Kühne embraces the labor involved in the entire process of creating a poster, from initial idea to finished product. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary for how to communicate through type and form in a truly contemporary way. Never retro, his work is a clever response to the search for new possibilities of graphic expression: true print.

Privilégiant le caractère typographique plutôt que les illustrations tapageuses, Mickaël Draï et Christophe Chelmis abordent un fait de société marquant : en 1975, il devient interdit d'utiliser des affiches aux formes généreuses. Les distributeurs de l'époque ne manquant pas d'idées, ils ont troqué leurs actrices contre des typographies et des panneaux graphiques. Le lexique employé et le poids des mots concordent pour devancer la loi et l'exploitation d'images trop explicites.

Wenn ein bekannter Literaturwissenschaftler bemerkt, dass man für das Forschen „eigentlich nichts als Ruhe“ benötigt, liegt dieser These eine Vorstellung von den Räumen zugrunde, in denen geisteswissenschaftliche Arbeit stattfinden sollte. Wo die Universität wiederum als „Fabrik des Wissens“ beschrieben wird, ist ein Produktionsprinzip heutiger Forschung analogisch benannt. Das dabei aufgerufene architektonische Modell, die Fabrik, wird keiner Analyse zugeführt. So gegensätzlich die Bilder sind, sie verweisen beide auf die notwendige Verräumlichung der Geisteswissenschaften. Als Metapher und Vergleich, als Utopie und Horrorszenario lässt sich an ihnen zugleich ablesen, in welchem Verhältnis Universität und Gesellschaft stehen beziehungsweise stehen sollen. Nicht zuletzt sagen Universitätsbauten – als Kathedralen des Geistes oder „Architektur als Technik“ – daher etwas über das Bild aus, das sich eine Gesellschaft von sich selber macht. Der hier reproduzierte Katalog war das Ergebnis eines von Andreas Brandolini, Jasper Morrison und Joachim Stanitzek im Sommersemester 1984 betreuten Kurzzeitprojekts am Fachbereich Industriedesign der Hochschule der Künste Berlin bei Prof. Nick Roericht. Außer den Betreuern selbst waren daran Marion Diegel, Matthias Diez, Axel Harmstorf, John Hirschberg, Jörg Hundertpfund, Gabriel Kornreich, Annette Krüger, Anna Maske, Hermann Meier, Susanne Neubohn, Gülzen Öztürk, Manuel Pfahl, Heike Salomon, Inge Sommer, Stiletto, Axel Stumpf, Christian Werner und Bettina Wiegand beteiligt. Einer ersten Verkaufsausstellung an der Hochschule im selben Jahr folgten Präsentationen beim Merve Verlag in Berlin, in der Galerie Strand München, in der Galerie Möbel Perdu Hamburg und im Werkbundarchiv Berlin.
