At the beginning of the 1970s US American physicist Gerard K. O’Neill developed the first ideas for colonizing space. Shortly thereafter, Stewart Brand, cybercommunard and editor of the Whole Earth Catalog, took up these ideas and published the book Space Colonies. In this and in other editions of the CoEvolution Quarterly, the issue of whether space might already be colonized in the year 2000 is discussed. Fabian Reimann’s Space Colonies. A Galactic Freeman’s Journal refers to these publications. In his photo essay he assembles historical, present-day, and speculative material, which he combines with fictional and factual stories to create a composite of different images of the world.

Um 1948 hat Hoffmann seine Selbstbiografie verfasst, in der er sein Leben rekapituliert und seinen Werdegang schildert. Von seiner Jugend im Kreis der Familienmitglieder im Heimatort Brtnice, über die Schul- und Studienzeit in Brünn und Wien, von der Gründung der Secession und der Wiener Werkstätte bis hin zu den späten 1920er-Jahren deckt der Text alle wichtigen Ereignisse ab. Der Leser erfährt Interessantes über Hoffmanns persönliche Beziehungen sowohl zu seiner Heimat und zu seinen Künstlerkollegen Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser oder Dagobert Peche als auch zu seinen Auftraggebern wie den Familien Wittgenstein, Stoclet, Primavesi und Mauthner. In the summer of 2015 writer Roman Ehrlich and photographer Michael Disqué visited the German army base Camp Marmal in Mazar-e Sharif in Afghanistan. Their aim was to portray the life of the soldiers in the camp without falling back on the standard narratives of journalistic reportage. At the heart of the book are the structures that the soldiers have created for themselves and the interaction between the camp’s architecture and its inhabitants; the extreme artificiality of the living environment; and the civilian aspect of life there that extends throughout the camp in spite of it being a military organization. Derived from a term used to mean the battlefield, Theatre of War represents all the aspects of “staging” that determine warfare — depicted here first and foremost in its most banal form: the everyday life of the camp as seen in its offices, workshops, and accommodation areas, in its utility hubs and kitchens, as the war’s employees occupy their time waiting and contemplating.

Die Gestalterin Marion Kliesch untersucht, wie Informationsunterdrückung bildhaft in Erscheinung tritt, also wie Bilder zensiert werden und was das für deren Rezeption bedeutet. Wie wirken diese Bilder und was lässt sich über ihre Ästhetik sagen? Und wie beeinflussen verdeckte, verpixelte oder unsichtbar gemachte Bilder unsere visuelle Wahrnehmung? Im ersten Teil des Buches wird die Vielschichtigkeit des Themas aufgefächert und beschrieben. No fashion, please! – die Verweigerung herkömmlicher Vorstellungen von Mode und Schönheit ist das zentrale Thema der 19 Einzelpräsentationen aus der internationalen zeitgenössischen Fotografieszene vorgestellt, die die fundamentale Beziehung zwischen Körper und (Be-)Kleidung, die Dialektik zwischen Form und Erscheinung des Körpers untersucht und hinterfragt. Die ausgewählten Künstler stehen in der Tradition der Körperkunst und arbeiten stark mit Querverweisen zu Installationen, Zeremonien und Ritualen.

AA Files is the Architectural Association School of Architecture’s journal of record and the successor to a long line of AA house journals (including titles such as AA Notes, AA Journal, Arena and AAQ) that began with the school’s founding in 1847. Launched in 1981 by the AA’s then chairman, Alvin Boyarsky, the journal appears twice a year and is sent out to members of the Architectural Association, individual subscribers and is distributed to a global network of bookshops. Since 2007 AA Files has been under the editorship of Thomas Weaver, the fourth of its editors, following Mary Wall, Mark Rappolt and David Terrien, who, with issue 57, initiated a redesign that saw the introduction of a new graphic design template, developed and still produced by the John Morgan studio, and a shift of focus in terms of its content towards more writerly models of scholarship, criticism and investigation, prompted not only by work, exhibitions and events from within the school, but by a rich and eclectic mix of architectural enquiry from all over the world.

At once radical, controversial and revered, Marina Abramovic (*1946 in Belgrade, Serbia) is one of the most discussed artists today. Famous for her groundbreaking performance works, she continues to expand the boundaries of art. The publication accompanying her first major retrospective in Europe gives an extensive overview of her work from the earliest years until today: film, photography, paintings and objects, installations and archival material. Since the early 1970s Marina Abramovic explores the intersection between performing and visual art in her work and, though rarely overtly political, poses questions of power and hierarchy. In addressing fundamental issues of our existence and seeking the core of notions like loss, memory, pain, endurance, and trust, she both provokes and moves us.

The publication Up Up—Stories of Johannesburg’s Highrises presents a selection of buildings in the inner city of Johannesburg. The focus lies on tall modernist towers that stood out at the time they were constructed. Witnesses to profound shifts in the political history of the metropolis, the buildings have gone through immense changes. They are documented in two distinct sections: One the one hand the formal architecture is presented with facts, floor plans, archival discoveries and contemporary images of the interior and the exterior. On the other hand each building is accompanied by a reportage or subjective essay on the inner workings of the building. Interviews with residents, research based texts on contemporary issues and independent contributions from invited writers, artists and photographers allow brief insights into the old and new lives of these towers.
