KUNSTforum is the only Nordic magazine that covers comtemporary, modern and historical art and visual culture. In the print edition we publish selected articles in English, here we publish English articles from the magazine and some articles written solely for this website.

The platform is a limited edition bi-annual magazine, a portrayal of the beautiful everyday, lying right under noses that were so busy searching they forgot to notice. Style is everywhere; it is an act or gesture, an accent or slur or slang, the latest dog, the smoker’s cigarette, short hair is the new long hair; if you couldn’t care you still care. It is important to describe and distill the time we live in whilst always pushing things forward.

Anfang der 1990er Jahre schockt Jeff Koons die Öffentlichkeit, indem er den italienischen Pornostar Cicciolina heiratet, sich in eindeutigen pornografischen Posen abbilden lässt und massenmedial inszeniert. Mit diesem Ereignis hob Koons die Frage nach Kunst und Leben auf ein neues Niveau. Der hierarchische Blick von der Stadt auf das Land wird umgekehrt, die romantische Verklärung des ländlichen Raumes als Ort der Natürlichkeit und Ursprünglichkeit, als Opfer der Industrialisierung und Verstädterung in Frage gestellt: Das Land wird zu einem ambivalenten Akteur, in vielerlei Hinsicht zum Vorreiter. Dem Philosophen Armen Avanessian zufolge sind Städte heute nur mehr vom Land aus zu betrachten, und dieses Land sei genauso wenig „natürlich“ wie der Rest der Natur.

Finland – though a small country judging by its population of 5.5 million inhabitants and population density of 18 inhabitants per km2 (the lowest in the EU) – boasts many superlatives: there are more saunas than cars; it has the most heavy metal bands per capita; any Finnish noun can have over 200 different forms; Finns are the world's top coffee drinkers, gulping down no less than 12 kg annually; they are the most avid readers of books and newspapers globally and world leaders in the use of libraries … The list goes on forever. We wanted to discover the design scene of Helsinki and its exciting summers, when the city is about to burst with culture and happy people, packed with outdoor theaters, al fresco cinemas, open-air exhibitions, awkward wife-carrying competitions and the great Flow festival! – only to frustratingly die down during the winter when the capital does not receive any sunshine for 51 consecutive days, with the temperature dropping below 0 degrees Celsius on an average of 169 days. When asking people how they survive the winter, quite a few have confessed that they hit southern destinations for a month, generously using up their vacation days. Most designers we met seem to have an awareness for design in their blood. The offices are packed with design classics combined with custom-made solutions, always with a sense of warmth, comfort and cosiness. In most offices people take off their shoes and walk around in slippers or barefoot – probably a tradition coming from those long snowy and muddy winters – admittedly, a little embarrassing for us Germans. Many design studios and agencies work for national brands with great pride, even if it is a Finnish pizza chain like Koti which named one of their bestsellers after Silvio Berlusconi – revenge served hot! In Helsinki, it becomes apparent that there are very few chain stores as we know them in Germany. It just seems to be too far away from market capitalism. Instead, as you walk through the city, Finland reveals itself to be a true design nation: Local brands, designers, shops, restaurants and cafés make it exceptional. You encounter works of the world’s most imitated and admired designers and architects around every corner. From Eero Aarnio’s Ball Chair (James Bond’s favorite seat) to Marimekko Poppies (dresses once worn by Jacqueline Kennedy during her husbands' 1960 presidential campaign), Finland has been setting trends for decades. When ‘Volume’ started as “magazine to go beyond architecture” in 2005, the world was a different one. There was a lot of attention for the spectacular in architecture, for instance, and little for where society was going in relation to architecture: the urgencies and opportunities architecture could and should engage with. Since, Volume explored a wide variety of topics and terrains, each time looking for the added value of architecture. So, what is the situation today? in this issue ‘Volume’ focuses on current dilemmas (young) architects are confronted with, both in education and in setting up their office. It’s less about ‘going beyond’ as such, and more about impact and repercussions.

At the beginning of the 1970s US American physicist Gerard K. O’Neill developed the first ideas for colonizing space. Shortly thereafter, Stewart Brand, cybercommunard and editor of the Whole Earth Catalog, took up these ideas and published the book Space Colonies. In this and in other editions of the CoEvolution Quarterly, the issue of whether space might already be colonized in the year 2000 is discussed. Fabian Reimann’s Space Colonies. A Galactic Freeman’s Journal refers to these publications. In his photo essay he assembles historical, present-day, and speculative material, which he combines with fictional and factual stories to create a composite of different images of the world.

AA Files is the Architectural Association School of Architecture’s journal of record and the successor to a long line of AA house journals (including titles such as AA Notes, AA Journal, Arena and AAQ) that began with the school’s founding in 1847. Launched in 1981 by the AA’s then chairman, Alvin Boyarsky, the journal appears twice a year and is sent out to members of the Architectural Association, individual subscribers and is distributed to a global network of bookshops. Since 2007 AA Files has been under the editorship of Thomas Weaver, the fourth of its editors, following Mary Wall, Mark Rappolt and David Terrien, who, with issue 57, initiated a redesign that saw the introduction of a new graphic design template, developed and still produced by the John Morgan studio, and a shift of focus in terms of its content towards more writerly models of scholarship, criticism and investigation, prompted not only by work, exhibitions and events from within the school, but by a rich and eclectic mix of architectural enquiry from all over the world.

Gleichzeitig kann sich ein Schlamassel auch wieder auflösen, weswegen unser Heft bei aller Zustandsbeschreibung auch Trost spendet, Lösungen sucht und z.B. der Frage nachgeht, wie wahrscheinlich ein Attentat auf Trump ist.

Each cover of i-D magazine gives you a knowing wink that hints at the wonder inside. Cutting-edge and influential, this publication is well known for its superb layout and first class photography. From the UK, this manual of style was one of the first to break the barrier between art and fashion photography.

From 1986 to 2005, Helmut Lang systematically deconstructed every assumption about clothing and the way it is worn and communicated. As he himself once said, “I kept all the traditions and shades that were good — and then re-thought it all.” The Austrian designer’s lists of “firsts” is so long it could double as conceptual art. Lang was one of the first designers to collaborate with visual artists. The first to show clothing for men and women in a single presentation. The first to pioneer backstage photography as we know it today with Juergen Teller. The first to move a fashion house across the Atlantic … and the list goes on. In a 48-page dossier, 032c Issue 31 explores THE HELMUT LANG LEGACY and how his abrupt exit from the industry in 2005 has been felt like phantom limb in the world of fashion. The comprehensive study features essays by Ingeborg Harms and Ulf Poschardt, a roundtable with Tim Blanks, Olivier Saillard, and Neville Wakefield, an interview with Lang himself, as well as rare material from the Helmut Lang archive. Is Calabasas the new Abu Dhabi? Are the Californian suburbs the perfect place for new energy experiments in modern apparel? In an editorial shot by MERT & MARCUS and conceptualized by KANYE WEST, 032c travels to the Los Angeles exurb of Calabasas to bathe in the dust of the Wests’ under-construction home designed by Axel Vervoordt. The shoot features cameos by KIM KARDASHIAN WEST, KHLOÉ KARDASHIAN, AMINA BLUE, TRAVIS SCOTT, and others. “At the time we started collaborating, everything in the world of art and fashion was polished. Everything was smooth, so we felt that Prada must be rough.” For the past decade, a windowless concrete hall at the PRADA headquarters has become an architectural gymnasium for REM KOOLHAAS and his firm OMA/AMO. Traveling from Rotterdam to Milan, architecture critic Jack Self examines the phenomenon of the firm’s catwalks for the Italian mega-house, exploring how Prada and OMA/AMO have teamed up to create the foundation of a new corporate aesthetic. “You fuck. Or you don’t fuck. You can’t fuck a little.” In a 2012 reportage, writer Alexander Gorkow and photographer Andreas Mühe followed RAMMSTEIN on their tour of America. Since then, our private obsession with this document has become a matter of political urgency. What was once the anti-capitalist spectacle of an East German rock band in 2012, now reads like a seismograph for the right-wing political landscape of 2016. Here, we witness ideology’s opposite: raw energy unhinged from the burden of truth. As our contemporary economy grows to demand CREATIVITYfrom all of its citizens, it has become increasingly unclear exactly what “creativity” is. In a double-feature illustrated by the Japanese photographer Kenta Cobayashi, Joachim Bessing speaks with Wolfgang Ullrich and Lars Vollmer on how society’s idea of a creative ethos has transformed within the digital revolution. “People say this is vandalism.” 032c’s Bianca Heuser and photographer Nadine Fraczkowski take us inside ANNE IMHOF’s Angst, a grand and opaque artwork that has drifted across the world like a low-pressure system. Furnished with smoke machines, sleeping bags, razors, and bongs, the three-act immersive opera is a training camp for the denizens of hyper-capitalism. Founded as sneaker blogs in 2005, HYPEBEAST and HIGHSNOBIETY have grown into large and disruptive forces in fashion. Simultaneously fuelling and gorging on a new generation’s appetite for content, they have set a rabid pace that has multinational brands following suit. Travelling up the feed and towards “the heart of content,” 032c’s Thom Bettridge and photographer Lukas Wassmann visit the companies’ respective HQs in Hong Kong and Berlin to suss out what this revolution spells for the landscape of media at large. In the “SSENSE Files,” we present scenes of cross-platform madness from our work at ssense.com. The section features seven interviews with a range of cultural producers from rappers LIL YACHTY and SCHOOLBOY Q to jewelry designer GAIA REPOSSI, stylist ANDREW RICHARDSON, author NATASHA STAGG, artist SIMON DENNY, and artist/musician FATIMA AL QADIRI. The White Review No. 19 features an our interview with ALVARO ENRIGUE, a Mexican writer in New York, ALICE HATTRICK's meditation on illness and intimacy, an excerpt from VIRGINIE DESPENTES' Vernon Subutex (trans. Frank Wynne), and new poems from SOPHIE ROBINSON. We are also excited to present interviews with philosopher ROSI BRAIDOTTI (conducted as part of our collaboration with the Centre for New and International Writing at the University of Liverpool), on how the humanities can combat racism and sexism, and artist RACHEL MACLEAN, whose hyper-surreal dystopian videos offer a dark vision on the present times (and who also contributes a concertina insert of her recent prints). The are long form essays by JACQUELINE FELDMAN, on feminist protest group Femen; and conceptual artist JILL MAGID on her stay at the house of the late Luis Barragán. THOMAS CLERC (translated by Daniel Levin Becker) contributes a beautiful homage to his friend Edouard Leve, whose writing has featured in previous issues of The White Review.
