For its 5th issue, Collection revue has changed its subtitle from the previous “A magazine around contemporary drawing” to a more simple “9 conversations”. The issue is still a direct extension of the previous ones: engaging in conversations with artists who would not have the occasion to be reunited elsewhere than on these pages. Whether its the lure of reminiscence, the promise of the future, or scientific fascination, the fantasy of time travel holds universal appeal. The laws of physics suggest that time does not actually flow in any particular direction and therefore we might—someday—travel through time as freely as we travel through space. This issue of Conveyor Magazine explores time travel by employing the camera as our time machine; a tool that alters our temporal experience and transforms perception of time and space. A photograph eternally suspends a moment, leaving behind a document that we may then return to and investigate again and again. Photographs allow us to reassemble and manipulate the sequence of events. Timelines are thus reconstructed, the past is altered, new histories are created, and the distant future is just a shortcut away. Der hierarchische Blick von der Stadt auf das Land wird umgekehrt, die romantische Verklärung des ländlichen Raumes als Ort der Natürlichkeit und Ursprünglichkeit, als Opfer der Industrialisierung und Verstädterung in Frage gestellt: Das Land wird zu einem ambivalenten Akteur, in vielerlei Hinsicht zum Vorreiter. Dem Philosophen Armen Avanessian zufolge sind Städte heute nur mehr vom Land aus zu betrachten, und dieses Land sei genauso wenig „natürlich“ wie der Rest der Natur.

Finland – though a small country judging by its population of 5.5 million inhabitants and population density of 18 inhabitants per km2 (the lowest in the EU) – boasts many superlatives: there are more saunas than cars; it has the most heavy metal bands per capita; any Finnish noun can have over 200 different forms; Finns are the world's top coffee drinkers, gulping down no less than 12 kg annually; they are the most avid readers of books and newspapers globally and world leaders in the use of libraries … The list goes on forever. We wanted to discover the design scene of Helsinki and its exciting summers, when the city is about to burst with culture and happy people, packed with outdoor theaters, al fresco cinemas, open-air exhibitions, awkward wife-carrying competitions and the great Flow festival! – only to frustratingly die down during the winter when the capital does not receive any sunshine for 51 consecutive days, with the temperature dropping below 0 degrees Celsius on an average of 169 days. When asking people how they survive the winter, quite a few have confessed that they hit southern destinations for a month, generously using up their vacation days. Most designers we met seem to have an awareness for design in their blood. The offices are packed with design classics combined with custom-made solutions, always with a sense of warmth, comfort and cosiness. In most offices people take off their shoes and walk around in slippers or barefoot – probably a tradition coming from those long snowy and muddy winters – admittedly, a little embarrassing for us Germans. Many design studios and agencies work for national brands with great pride, even if it is a Finnish pizza chain like Koti which named one of their bestsellers after Silvio Berlusconi – revenge served hot! In Helsinki, it becomes apparent that there are very few chain stores as we know them in Germany. It just seems to be too far away from market capitalism. Instead, as you walk through the city, Finland reveals itself to be a true design nation: Local brands, designers, shops, restaurants and cafés make it exceptional. You encounter works of the world’s most imitated and admired designers and architects around every corner. From Eero Aarnio’s Ball Chair (James Bond’s favorite seat) to Marimekko Poppies (dresses once worn by Jacqueline Kennedy during her husbands' 1960 presidential campaign), Finland has been setting trends for decades. We invite you to discover the world's northernmost EU capital during our journey and share with us the love for its rich design scene, from legends like Eric Brunn to the young wild kids, newcomers from Aalto University, The School of Arts, Design and Architecture of Helsinki.

When ‘Volume’ started as “magazine to go beyond architecture” in 2005, the world was a different one. There was a lot of attention for the spectacular in architecture, for instance, and little for where society was going in relation to architecture: the urgencies and opportunities architecture could and should engage with. Since, Volume explored a wide variety of topics and terrains, each time looking for the added value of architecture. So, what is the situation today? in this issue ‘Volume’ focuses on current dilemmas (young) architects are confronted with, both in education and in setting up their office. It’s less about ‘going beyond’ as such, and more about impact and repercussions.

Bilder haben das Potential, Macht auszuüben, weswegen sie, früher wie heute, zurückgehalten und manipuliert werden. Die Gestalterin Marion Kliesch untersucht, wie Informationsunterdrückung bildhaft in Erscheinung tritt, also wie Bilder zensiert werden und was das für deren Rezeption bedeutet. Wie wirken diese Bilder und was lässt sich über ihre Ästhetik sagen? Und wie beeinflussen verdeckte, verpixelte oder unsichtbar gemachte Bilder unsere visuelle Wahrnehmung? Im ersten Teil des Buches wird die Vielschichtigkeit des Themas aufgefächert und beschrieben. Im zweiten Teil werden stichprobenartig verschiedene Fälle von visueller Zensur aus den Bereichen Zensur des Körpers, Zensur des Raumes und Zensur des Gedächtnisses analysiert. AA Files is the Architectural Association School of Architecture’s journal of record and the successor to a long line of AA house journals (including titles such as AA Notes, AA Journal, Arena and AAQ) that began with the school’s founding in 1847. Launched in 1981 by the AA’s then chairman, Alvin Boyarsky, the journal appears twice a year and is sent out to members of the Architectural Association, individual subscribers and is distributed to a global network of bookshops. Since 2007 AA Files has been under the editorship of Thomas Weaver, the fourth of its editors, following Mary Wall, Mark Rappolt and David Terrien, who, with issue 57, initiated a redesign that saw the introduction of a new graphic design template, developed and still produced by the John Morgan studio, and a shift of focus in terms of its content towards more writerly models of scholarship, criticism and investigation, prompted not only by work, exhibitions and events from within the school, but by a rich and eclectic mix of architectural enquiry from all over the world.

bauhaus 8 is given over to the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s annual theme for 2016: Movement. Its focus is on new departures in society, change and speed, migration and mobility as well as art and dynamism, architecture and performance, flights of fancy and locomotor systems. In bauhaus 8 we encounter Kandinsky on a bicycle, Moholy-Nagy’s Vision in Motion, Paul Klee overcoming gravity, Gropius’s writing desk in exile, and Karla Grosch’s programme of physical education at the Bauhaus as well as numerous other protagonists. The annual publication combines historical views with the contemporary positions of designers, artists, acrobats, choreographers, curators, and photographers. In the process it moves from the Bauhaus Building in Dessau to the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, to the festival stage at the Festspielhaus Hellerau, to Lawn Road Flats in London, and other venues. The Borrowers: Copyright and its Discontents The first copyright law, made in the eighteenth century, granted artists the exclusive right to control the copying of their original creations for 14 years. Too brief a period? Perhaps, but by the beginning of the twenty-first century, copyright’s term had grown to cover the life of the artist plus 70 years – which means that Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avigon will remain protected until 2043, 136 years after it was completed. Too long, surely? In this issue we look at the twentieth-century phenomenon of “copyright creep” and its implications for artists working in the Digital Age. We talk to Christopher Clary about Sorry to Dump On You, a personal/collective project embedded in gay online culture, and to David Claerbout about his unauthorized collaborations with Elvis Presley and others; we look at Eleanor Macnair’s Play-Doh recreations of iconic photographs; and we interview Stephanie Syjuco about her “copies, homages and perversions”. We also go in search of Ozmo and discover that even (and perhaps even especially) street artists get “bitten”, and meet Thomas Sauvin, whose remarkable (and entirely borrowed) Beijing Silvermine project is writing an alternative history of modern China. For some artists death is the end, but for others it opens a new chapter in their career. In this issue we talk to Dr Loretta Würtenberger, founder of the Institute for Artists’ Estates, about ways to keep artists’ works fresh and visible after their deaths, and we look at the remarkable posthumous career of Philippe Vandenberg. There’s also a Paper Gallery dedicated to the collaged “conversations” of Ruth van Beek, in addition to Encounters with US painter Joan Semmel, German artists Neo Rauch and Thomas Ruff, Dutch photographer Scarlett Hooft Graafland, Danish designer Henrik Vibskov, and Spanish painter Secundino Hernández.

Das vorliegende Heft, das unseren Vietnamfokus abschließt, konstatiert einen Paradigmenwechsel im Umgang mit den Herausforderungen des Klimas. Statt klimatische Probleme konventionell technisch zu bearbeiten, löst die junge vietnamesische Architektengeneration sie kreativ mit architektonischen Mitteln. Im Gegensatz dazu hat der erste Band ARCH+ 226 Vietnam – Die stille Avantgarde das Augenmerk auf eine sich derzeit vollziehende, einschneidende Wende gerichtet, die das soziale Engagement der Architektur zum Ausgangspunkt einer Neufundierung der Disziplin nimmt. Damit sind die zwei global relevanten Tendenzen benannt, die wir am Beispiel Vietnams behandeln: Neben dem sozialen Bauen eröffnet das klimagerechte Entwerfen der Architektur den Weg zu einer neuen gesellschaftlichen Relevanz.

And so we find Vincenzo Latronico attempting to get in touch with E.T., a collection of Lucy McKenzie’s illusory quodlibets, a conversation between Jumana Manna and Robert Wyatt on art and ethics, along with other points of view from Sarah Demeuse, Mark de Silva, Jocelyn Penny Small, Abigail Reynolds, James Langdon & Mathew Kneebone, Johan Hjerpe, and the inimitable 9mother9horse9eyes9.

Markus Grob erzählt die Geschichte der Architektur im 20. Jahrhundert entlang einer Reihe von Einfamilienhäusern. Ihre entweder steilen oder flachen Dächer analysiert er als aus dem 19. Jahrhundert hervorgegangene Formen, deren Gegeneinander in einem „Dächerstreit“ mündet. Damit wirft er einen bisher nicht dagewesenen, neuen Blick auf die Baugeschichte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts und auf seine Siedlungsformen von Vorstadt, Speckgürtel und Agglomeration. „Merkwürdig, wie diese beiden Dachformen im vergangenen Jahrhundert gegeneinander ausgespielt wurden, […] entsprachen [sie] folglich zumindest anfangs verwandten Lebensvorstellungen, bevor sich diese zu gegensätzlichen gesellschaftlichen Programmen auseinanderentwickelten und die Dächer zu Zeichen im Streit um die Vorherrschaft machten, der im Entsetzlichen mündete. Die Scham danach wollt nichts mehr wissen von allem, was darunter ausgeheckt worden ist: so blieben Dächer schließlich als leere Formen zurück und dem jeweils eigenen Kalkül der Bewohner, Entwerfer und Kreditgeber überlassen. Und doch gibt es noch beide Formen, weiterhin sind sie von den Vorlieben getragen, ist ihre Wirkung nicht aufgehoben, nur ist diese unbestimmt geworden.“ (Markus Grob) 17 auf Spaziergängen selber gemachte Fotografien bilden den Auftakt einer ersten Untersuchung. Diese Reihe wird begleitet von ausführlichen Legenden, die den jeweiligen Anspielungszusammenhang skizzieren. Auf den letzten 16 Seiten findet der Leser ein Resumée der Beobachtungen und Recherchen als Erzählung. Mit der Frage nach flach oder steil und dem Form- und Lebensgefühl des 20. Jahrhunderts dokumentiert das Buch die Suche nach der geeigneten Bauform der damaligen Architekten und Bauherren dieses aufreibenden Jahrhunderts.

The more stuff we accumulate, the more space we need to store it all. Vast portions of the landscape are claimed and governed by spaces of storage, their maintenance, and the goods that move through them—or remain buried within them indefinitely. This issue of Harvard Design Magazine investigates and unpacks the contents, containers, and systems of storage that organize our world. Storage is the aggregation and containment of the material and immaterial stuff of culture; but also the safeguarding—or hoarding—of energy and tools for some imagined future purpose. How does all this stuff mask or overcompensate for economic and ecological bankruptcy? Is storage about greed or need? Storage, perhaps, is everything we can live without but insist on living with. “Shelf Life” explores what’s inside the box (shed, tank, urn, vault, crypt, crate, case, pot, bag, vat, morgue, safe, bin, archive, warehouse, cabinet, cellar, cemetery, depository, locker, freezer, landfill, library). Even as we attempt to reduce and recycle, the stuff that we dispose of also needs to be stored. Where do we put it? Our planet is now a saturated receptacle. This warehouse is full, and we’re all inside it.
