Ob auf Messen, Biennalen oder in Museen: Kunst mit politischen und ethischen Botschaften erzielt eine maximale Aufmerksamkeit, sublimiert die Kunstwelt und lässt Künstlerkarrieren befeuern. Hoch im Kurs sind Themen wie Rechtspopulismus, Donald Trump, Demokratie und die Flüchtlingskrise. Gleichzeitig scheint die künstlerische Freiheit durch Shitstorms und eine neue „Political Correctness“ zu schwinden. Welche Folgen und Gefahren entstehen hierdurch? Wie stellt man Qualitätsmerkmale in Bezug auf politische Kunst auf? Gibt es „linke“ Kunstwerke, die sich auch für rechtspopulistische Weltbilder auslegen lassen? In diesem Themenband wird in Essays diesen Fragen nachgegangen, Gespräche mit Aktivisten, einem Regisseur, sowie Künstlern diskutieren die Rolle der Kunst zwischen Aktivismus, Aufklärung und Engagement. Gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts schien eine zur Epoche gewordenen „Moderne“ beendet und mit der Postmoderne der Aufbruch in eine neue Unübersichtlichkeit und einen freien Stilpluralismus entschieden. Um die Jahrtausendwende begann international eine Neubefragung der Moderne. Vor allem in der Bildenden Kunst erfährt die Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Epoche und ihren verschiedenen Phasen aktuell eine unerwartete Intensität. Weltweit entstehen Forschungen und Ausstellungen zu regionalen Modernen, werden übersehene Künstler – auch durch einen hungrigen Kunstmarkt – neu- oder wiederentdeckt. Ein Anreiz zur Auseinandersetzung mit den Utopien und Formsprachen der „ersten“ Moderne kommt dabei nicht zuletzt von den Künstlern, die sich von der historischen Aufbruchsstimmung inspirieren lassen oder die Moderne als „DNA des Zeitgenössischen“ für sich nutzen. Innovationspotential und Ausdrucksformen der Avantgarden wirken zwar noch immer als Gradmesser nach, werden aber einer kritischen Revision unterzogen. Eines ist dabei sicher: Die Grenzen der Moderne werden neu abgesteckt Der vorliegende Band führt mit einleitenden Essays und zahlreichen Interviews mit Künstlern, Kuratoren, Kunsthistorikern/ -kritikern und Museumsdirektoren unterschiedlichste Stimmen zusammen, die diesen akuten „Reload“ der Moderne beleuchten und hinterfragen, warum eine bereits als abgeschlossen gegoltene Epoche wieder so aktuell ist.
