Hollywood, 1927. California, 1927. America, 1927. The world, 1927. It was a year like any other year — brim-filled with chaos and calamity, success and sensation — the minutia of everything and nothing. When we broke proverbial ground on Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, we re-animated a strange and special part of Los Angeles' story — a historic compound built in 1927 by the newly founded independent United Artists. We asked celebrated film and art director Mike Mills to create the art for all of the guest rooms in our new hotel, he designed a webwork of pieces highlighting the events of that fateful year — with the work in each individual room contributing to a sweeping property-wide narrative. We've bound these micro-stories together into a special yearbook — cataloging both Mill's elegant work, and the year that long-ago was.

Rock/Music Writings collects Dan Graham’s influential writings about rock and roll music and its cultural impact. First published in 2009, Rock/Music Writings includes thirteen essays written between 1968 and 1988, most of which were originally printed in small magazines or journals, including Extensions, Fusion, REAL LIFE, and ZG. Graham was a friend and supporter of many musicians active in the No Wave scene that was centered around New York City in the late ’70s. In addition to collaborating with musicians during this period, Graham created “Rock My Religion,” a video that demonstrates parallels between rock music culture and religious rituals, such as Shaker dances and revivalist meetings. The work’s related text, also titled “Rock My Religion,” is included in Rock/Music Writings, along with texts such as “The End of Liberalism,” “New Wave Rock and the Feminine,” “McLaren’s Children,” and “Artist as Producer.” These texts examine the lyrics and backgrounds of bands like The Beatles, The Kinks, Devo, The Ramones, the Patti Smith Group, the Sex Pistols, and Bow Wow Wow, relating them to consumerism and visual art movements, including Abstract Expressionism and Pop art. Dan Graham is an artist based in New York. Since the 1960s, he has produced a wide range of work and writing that engages in a highly analytical discourse on the historical, social, and ideological functions of contemporary cultural systems. Architecture, popular music, video, and television are among the focuses of his investigations, which he articulates through essays, performances, installations, videotapes, and architectural/sculptural designs.

Paint & Polish sources visual inspiration from the microeconomic culture of Hispanic and African-American nail artists in the Northwest Side of Chicago. It fosters engagement with these artists by highlighting their work and collaborating with them. Included are oral histories, conversations with various nail artists, their portraits by Helen Maurene Cooper, and photography from their business. By documenting the community, this set of materials engages with it profoundly. Inspired by these sources and the visually tempting, distinct style of the nail art, Cooper’s photographic artworks open a gateway to elaborate on the visual identification of nail art. In both photography and the nail art scene, concerns such as gesture, self-expression and labor are prominent. The accompanying writings take these issues into consideration. Published by M/M(Paris), Alphadicks brings together an original series of drawings by Mathias Augustyniak. The title is appropriate: the black and white illustrations portray twenty-six elegant young men with giant phalli protruding from their backs, breaking out of their hats or placed delicately around their shoulders like animals after the hunt. A cheeky text in rhyme by Glenn O’Brien entitled ‘Dickheads’ introduces the drawings.

First published to critical acclaim in 1999 and reprinted numerous times, Fucked Up and Photocopied: Instant Art of the Punk Rock Movement is still the seminal book on the art of punk rock fliers. While most attention has been paid to the phenomenal archive of images in the book, the essays contained offer an incredible snapshot of the birth of the movement and its lasting legacy. The Reader collects all of these insightful pieces together with those contained in its follow up book, Punk is Dead, Punk is Everything in one tome. Writers include Brendan Mullen, Jello Biafra, Pushead, Mike Watt, Lorna Doom, Tony Alva, and many more alongside interviews with punk pioneers Ian Mackaye and Malcolm McLaren.

Die militärische Nutzung von Tieren spielt seit Anbeginn der Kriegsgeschichte eine entscheidende Rolle. Tiere sind ständige Wegbegleiter, jedoch keineswegs ebenbürtige Partner der Menschen. 32 erstaunliche, skurrile und bizarre Tiersoldaten dieses Buches zeigen, dass der Mensch keine Grenzen kennt, wenn es darum geht, sich gegenüber dem Feind einen Vorteil zu verschaffen. Woher kommt die Selbstsicherheit, mit der der Mensch sich die Fähigkeiten der Tiere zunutze macht ? Welche Konsequenzen hat das für Mensch und Tier, und wie und warum gerät der Vormachtsglaube der Menschen gerade zu Kriegszeiten ins Wanken?

Mehr als fünfzig Jahre lang war meine stärkste und intensivste Beziehung die zu meiner Arbeit. Nach dem Bachelor begann ich in den Sechzigern als Studentin an der Yale University, den Phallus als Metapher für Feminismus und männliches Imponiergehabe zu verwenden. An der Yale-Uni gab es zu dieser Zeit im Grundstudium nur Männer. Mit der Zeit begeisterte ich mich für die drastischen Graffiti, die ich in den Männertoiletten entdeckte; der derbe Humor und das lose hingeworfene Gekritzel inspirierten mich. Aggression und Humor sind in meiner Arbeit eng verbunden. Sehr deutlich wird das in «Supercock» (1966), der Zeichnung eines Comichelden mit riesigen Genitalien, der sich durch die Welt ejakuliert; oder auch in «Fun-Gun» (1967), der anatomischen Zeichnung eines Phallus, der eine Collage lebendiger Munition abschiesst. Meine «Fuck Vietnam»-Serie war erst der Anfang. Graffiti-Elemente und -Stilmittel ziehen sich durch meine gesamte Arbeit. Sie äussern sich auch in skatologischen Werktiteln wie «Dicks of Death» (2015). Ich begegne dem Krieg mit sehr eindringlichen Worten und Bildern, die einen vor den Kopf stossen. Ausgestopfte Phalli, Blut und Sperma gleich neben Bildern der Nation und der Flagge der Vereinigten Staaten: Das ist lustig – aber eben auch todernst! Holzkohle ist mein liebstes Medium. Über meine gesamte künstlerische Laufbahn habe ich das Arbeiten mit Holzkohle als äusserst dynamisch, roh und persönlich erlebt. Es verleiht diesen politischen Zeichnungen etwas Kerniges und lässt sie aus dem Bauch heraus kommen. Die Holzkohlearbeiten stehen für eine Verschmelzung von Antikriegskunst, Feminismus und Sexualität. Jenseits dieser Themen vertieft sich meine Arbeit in die vielen Schichten der menschlichen Psyche. Meine Kunst konfrontiert die Betrachterin, den Betrachter mit den Nöten und der Verworrenheit menschlicher Beziehungen – mit dem ewigen Zwist, der aus ihnen entsteht, und den Spannungen, die seit unseren Ursprüngen bis zum heutigen Tag darin mitschwingen. Quel point commun existe-t-il entre Tadanori Yokoo – un des plus grands artistes contemporains japonais, lauréat du Praemium Imperiale 2015 – et les mangas de science-fiction? Apparemment, aucun. Using very different kinds of tools — from a computer to a pantograph — for his compositions, he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Dafi Kühne embraces the labor involved in the entire process of creating a poster, from initial idea to finished product. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary for how to communicate through type and form in a truly contemporary way. Privilégiant le caractère typographique plutôt que les illustrations tapageuses, Mickaël Draï et Christophe Chelmis abordent un fait de société marquant : en 1975, il devient interdit d'utiliser des affiches aux formes généreuses. Les distributeurs de l'époque ne manquant pas d'idées, ils ont troqué leurs actrices contre des typographies et des panneaux graphiques. Karl-Marx-Stadt, 1979; lives and works in Berlin) describes the effect he hopes his pictures will have. Like the photograph of Helmut Schmidt’s office he chose for the cover of this book. In fact, he leaves nothing to chance, staging each setting down to the smallest detail. Deliberate selection of the space and precise lighting have become his trademark. His unconventional style has made Mühe the shooting star of the German photography scene and a sought-after portraitist of prominent politicians and celebrities such as Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, the Italian ambassador Antonio Puri Purini, Christiane zu Salm, and Gerhard Richter.

In 2014, Candida Höfer (b. Eberswalde, Germany, 1944; lives and works in Cologne) traveled to Mexico, visiting the eight cities Ciudad de México, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tepotzotlán, Tlacochahuaya, and Tonantzintla, where she photographed old and new libraries, theaters and opera houses, churches and museums, poorhouses and palaces. Most of the pictures are organized by symmetry along a central axis, a characteristic feature of her art. If these works suggest her training with Hilla and Bernd Becher, who taught photography in Düsseldorf—she is now the best-known of their students—others show a “new” Candida Höfer: old-fashioned offices, weather-beaten walls, and simple stores as well as a few expertly captured details of façades, floors, and interiors. For more than a decade, photographer Arne Reimer has visited record stores and collectors in Europe and the United States. The vinyl record was once a powerful medium, writes Ulf Erdmann Ziegler in his essay, but it's greatness really only became visible when second-hand stores took over twenty-five years ago. Reimer looks back to an analogue age: carefully collecting evidence in dusty crates, shop windows and stacks of record covers. Book of Void deals with the romantic notion of destroying precious artworks and aims to explore its inherent logic – what is it like to live in a world ruled by fear in which a static work of art can become a harmful incomprehensible “Thing” that must be destroyed? Book of Void is a fictionalized account of two subsequent slashings of monumental minimal artworks at the Stedelijk Museum and takes cues from The Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi’s classic handbook of samurai swordsmanship and philosophy. Book of Void poses the question if such acts of violence are truly pointless, or do they possess an innate spiritual beauty?

The first volume will be published to coincide with the tenth anniversary edition of 'Le Dictateur', and will then be published annually. 'FAQ', or Frequently Asked Questions, references an attempt to synthesize a recurrent flow, a tenor, an ideal visual representation of a given and very subjective “now.” Born out of an acute image consumption disorder, 'FAQ' reflects the mental assimilation of a relentless roving within physical and virtual art spaces: from galleries to Tumblr accounts, museums, or artists studios. It can be seen as a portable exhibition, a show on paper, a project of restitution, a hybrid object that you can leaf and scroll through. Far from being a rational enterprise, its lack of rules, hierarchy, order—or concept for that matter—make it expressly and brazenly as personal and biased as possible. 'FAQ' reflects the obsessive mannerism of its authors. The first issue includes works by Thomas Bayrle, Neil Beloufa, Caroll Dunham, Andra Ursuta, Jon Rafman, Kathy Grannan, Llyn Foulkes, Camille Henrot, Steven Shaerer, Korakrit Arunanondchai, and Judith Bernstein, among many others.

The photographer Jens Klein was invited by the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst to produce an image book. He decided to sift through the application documents of over eight thousand scholarship holders from the 1950s on who had submitted analogue passport photographs to accompany their applications. Covering a period from 1950 to 2012, Klein selected 176 photographs of applicants who had received support from the foundation: a kind of transverse look across time and a visual chronicle reflecting Germany’s history and the evolution of photography. The photographs show how the medium has changed over the years: from black and white to colour, from an analogue to a digital medium, from elaborate studio shots to quick photo-booth pictures. In 2012, the Studienwerk introduced an online application process, thus ending the era of analogue images.

Symbolic Exchange, designed by OK-RM, was published in September 2016 after the 2015 Bold Tendencies exhibition. It includes interviews with artists Richard Wentworth, Metahaven and åyr, as well as additional texts and photography from the exhibition.

In the period from the 1950s to the 1970s, a large number of cinemas were built in both the urban and rural areas of South India. Their architecture is an unusual mix of Western influences and local building styles. The brightly coloured façades resemble stage sets and provide a foretaste of the film experience in the auditorium, where the extravagant forms and embellishments are continued, getting the audience in the mood for the cinematic world before the opening credits roll. One might call this architectural language a kind of hybrid modernism. Many of these cinemas have been maintained in their original state. However, in the big cities, the process of converting them into multiplexes has already begun. Haubitz+Zoche’s photographs from the period 2010 – 2013 document a piece of cinema culture that has already for the most part disappeared in Europe and the USA and is being increasingly displaced in India by commercial interests.

Since the 1979 revolution, Iran has developed its own image culture, with public space serving primarily as a transit zone and a screen where state-sanctioned religious ideology is projected. Pride of place is given to memorials to the first Gulf war (the Iran–Iraq War of 1980–88), which is part of the founding myth of the Islamic Republic. Between 2011 and 2014 Oliver Hartung produced a work on Iran, typological series of images depicting monuments, murals, architecture, and war cemeteries. In it he creates a portrait of an exceptionally photogenic country that is nevertheless largely unknown in the West: in Damghan a colossal ear of wheat acts as a street lamp and in Isfahan a hand grenade with an Internet symbol suggests the potential risks inherent in the world wide web. The names of the places where the photos were taken are provided in English.

Engagement with broader implications and potential in relation to the fashion system as well as the activation of the design approach was made possible and has taken shape through conversations, in depth analysis and explorations with and by a diverse range of people. For two decades until his death in 2003, keyboard rock star Wesley Willis (*1963) rendered Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway and geometric skyline with ballpoint pen and felt-tip-marker lines. Known primarily to an alternative public for the uniquely singular sounds from his Technics KN 2000 and surreal texts which explored the themes of daily life such as fast food, bus lines, cultural trends or violent confrontations with super heroes, Wesley Willis’s drawings testify to the years he spent sitting in on drawing classes at the Illinois Institute of Technology, manifest in drafting techniques Willis never abandoned but, to singular effect, refused to master. A series of small untitled drawings in blue ink from the early 80s depict big rigs, tractor trailers, rolling stock, and transit-authority buses in side and isometric views. His sketches, often in color, explore almost obsessively the congested freeway which connects Chicago’s South Side with the city’s downtown – a metaphor for his wish to bridge the two worlds. At age of 28, Willis began to hear voices. He called then his “demons.” According to him writing, performing, and recording help quiet the voices in his head. Wesley Willis died on August 21, 2003 at age 40 in Skokie, Illinois. Delmes & Zander Cologne in Cologne first showed the work of Wesley Willis in Germany in 2013 and has represented the artist ever since.

Few of the sleeves showcased here are beautiful in the normal sense of the word. But they all have an urgency and an exhilarating disregard for design conventions that makes them exceptional. They are all clarion calls for independence and freedom from pop industry norms. The work in this book is culled from the record collections of designer (and Unit Editions co-founder) Tony Brook, and leading punk scholar Russ Bestley. As one of the world’s leading authorities on punk and post-punk music, Russ has contributed an insightful essay to the book. The book also features interviews with designer Malcolm Garrett, Mute founder Daniel Miller and Sniffin’ Glue editor and musician Mark Perry.

The central motif for this book is the work of Merce Cunningham and the theoretical and emotional response by writers, artists, dancers and musicians to the milestones in his creative development, from 1944 to 1999. Born in Centralia, Washington in 1919, Merce Cunningham can be considered the founder of contemporary dance as “a moving image of life”. His innovations in the field of choreography and movement date back to the 1940s, when, after meeting John Cage, Cunningham proposed separating music from dance, then turned to a chance method involving a random montage of movements. His language harmonizes and meshes with the art of Rauschenberg, Johns, Warhol, Stella, Lichtenstein and Nauman. From the 1970s to the present, he has used film, video and computers, which continue to offer him new experimental possibilities.

Since its origins in the 1970s, punk has had an explosive influence on fashion. With its eclectic mixing of stylistic references, punk effectively introduced the postmodern concept of bricolage to the elevated precincts of haute couture and directional ready-to-wear. As a style, punk is about chaos, anarchy, and rebellion. Drawing on provocative sexual and political imagery, punks made fashion overtly hostile and threatening. This aesthetic of violence – even of cruelty – was intrinsic to the clothes themselves, which were often customized with rips, tears, and slashes, as well as studs, spikes, zippers, D-Rings, safety pins, and razor blades, among other things. This extraordinary publication examines the impact of punk’s aesthetic of brutality on high fashion, focusing on its do-it-yourself, rip-it-to-shreds ethos, the antithesis of couture’s made-to-measure exactitude. Indeed, punk’s democracy stands in opposition to fashion’s autocracy. Yet, as this book reveals, even haute couture has readily appropriated the visual and symbolic language of punk, replacing beads with studs, paillettes with safety pins, and feathers with razor blades in an attempt to capture the style’s rebellious energy. Focusing on high fashion’s embrace of punk’s aesthetic vocabulary, this book reveals how designers have looked to the quintessential anti-establishment style to originate new ideals of beauty and fashionability.

Hippie Modernism examines the art, architecture and design of the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s. The catalogue surveys the radical experiments that challenged societal norms while proposing new kinds of technological, ecological and political utopia. It includes the counter-design proposals of Victor Papanek and the anti-design polemics of Global Tools; the radical architectural visions of Archigram, Superstudio, Haus-Rucker-Co and ONYX; the installations of Ken Isaacs, Joan Hills, Mark Boyle, Hélio Oiticica and Neville D'Almeida; the experimental films of Jordan Belson, Bruce Conner and John Whitney; posters and prints by Emory Douglas, Corita Kent and Victor Moscoso; documentation of performances by the Diggers and the Cockettes; publications such as Oz and The Whole Earth Catalog; books by Marshall McLuhan and Buckminster Fuller; and much more. This dynamic counter movement churned out heaps of photocopied, hand stapled fanzines that expressed ideas, music and works of art. Some became professional magazines. By creating its own press, the punk movement secured its place and its voice in the history of 20th century art and culture. The book Punk Press compiles the stunning graphics created by these publications, spanning from the East Village, to East London, to the Left Bank, featuring multiple collages, cutouts and handcrafted typography, standing as a visual tour through one of music’s most influential movements.
