Kalligrafie des Nordens Naturstudien in Zeichen Anläßlich seines 80. Geburtstages erscheint erstmalig eine Monographie über das Werk des Malers und Grafikers Krister Follin. Die abgebildeten Werke entstammen dem Nachlass des Künstlers, der sich nach wie vor in privater Aufbewahrung in Glemmingebro befindet. Eine Vielzahl seiner Werke befinden sich unter anderem im Nationalmuseum Stockholm, der Kunstvereinigung Lundensias in Lund, der Universitätsbibliothek Lund, Göteborg Museum, Eskilstuna Museum, der Staatsbibliothek Malmö.

Das Berliner Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum befindet sich gleich am S-Bahnhof Tiergarten, an der Straße des 17. Juni Ecke Klopstockstraße: Es wurde 1978 gegründet, als der Großteil der Straßenbeleuchtung längst elektrisch funktionierte und die technisch wie ästhetisch altmodischen Modelle mehr und mehr aussortiert wurden. Etwa 90 Laternen sind entlang von Parkwegen permanent ausgestellt: die Modelle stammen aus den Jahren 1826 bis 1956 und aus insgesamt 36 Städten. Gleich außerhalb des Parks, die Straße des 17. Juni flankierend, sind zwei elektrische Straßenlaternen zu finden, die weder Teil einer Ausstellung sind noch irgendeine Art von Beschriftung aufweisen: die einen östlich, die anderen westlich der kreuzenden S-Bahn-Gleise. Ihnen ist diese Publikation gewidmet. Im Gründungsjahr des Freilichtmuseums, 1978, widmete der Religionsphilosoph Klaus Heinrich an der Freien Universität Berlin seine Vorlesung des Sommersemesters dem Thema des deutschen Klassizismus in der Architektur, oder genauer: der Willfährigkeit des Klassizismus zwischen Karl Friedrich Schinkel und Albert Speer. Sein Zitat bespricht die Speerlaterne, links. Einige Jahre früher, 1964, veröffentlichte der Verleger und Schriftsteller Wolf Jobst Siedler ein Buch mit dem Titel Die gemordete Stadt. Abgesang auf Putte und Straße, Platz und Baum. Sein Thema ist die Veränderung der Stadt Berlin und des Lebens in ihren Straßen. In Bild und Text beschwört Siedler ein “ursprüngliches”, kaiserzeitliches Berlin – und stellt dies polemisch einem gegenwärtigen, von Neuplanungen geprägten Berlin gegenüber. For two decades until his death in 2003, keyboard rock star Wesley Willis (*1963) rendered Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway and geometric skyline with ballpoint pen and felt-tip-marker lines. Known primarily to an alternative public for the uniquely singular sounds from his Technics KN 2000 and surreal texts which explored the themes of daily life such as fast food, bus lines, cultural trends or violent confrontations with super heroes, Wesley Willis’s drawings testify to the years he spent sitting in on drawing classes at the Illinois Institute of Technology, manifest in drafting techniques Willis never abandoned but, to singular effect, refused to master. A series of small untitled drawings in blue ink from the early 80s depict big rigs, tractor trailers, rolling stock, and transit-authority buses in side and isometric views. His sketches, often in color, explore almost obsessively the congested freeway which connects Chicago’s South Side with the city’s downtown – a metaphor for his wish to bridge the two worlds. At age of 28, Willis began to hear voices. He called then his “demons.” According to him writing, performing, and recording help quiet the voices in his head. Wesley Willis died on August 21, 2003 at age 40 in Skokie, Illinois. Delmes & Zander Cologne in Cologne first showed the work of Wesley Willis in Germany in 2013 and has represented the artist ever since.

Few of the sleeves showcased here are beautiful in the normal sense of the word. But they all have an urgency and an exhilarating disregard for design conventions that makes them exceptional. They are all clarion calls for independence and freedom from pop industry norms. The work in this book is culled from the record collections of designer (and Unit Editions co-founder) Tony Brook, and leading punk scholar Russ Bestley. As one of the world’s leading authorities on punk and post-punk music, Russ has contributed an insightful essay to the book. The book also features interviews with designer Malcolm Garrett, Mute founder Daniel Miller and Sniffin’ Glue editor and musician Mark Perry.

The central motif for this book is the work of Merce Cunningham and the theoretical and emotional response by writers, artists, dancers and musicians to the milestones in his creative development, from 1944 to 1999. Born in Centralia, Washington in 1919, Merce Cunningham can be considered the founder of contemporary dance as “a moving image of life”. His innovations in the field of choreography and movement date back to the 1940s, when, after meeting John Cage, Cunningham proposed separating music from dance, then turned to a chance method involving a random montage of movements. His language harmonizes and meshes with the art of Rauschenberg, Johns, Warhol, Stella, Lichtenstein and Nauman. From the 1970s to the present, he has used film, video and computers, which continue to offer him new experimental possibilities.

The American photographer Collier Schorr has been working in Southern Germany for the past 12 years, compiling a documentary and fictional portrait of a small town inhabited by historical apparitions. For Schorr, the German landscape is a map of her own history, both imagined and inherited. Combining the overlapping roles of war photographer, traveling portraitist, anthropologist and family historian, the series Forest and Fields (Wald und Wiesen) tells the interwoven stories of a place and time determined by memory, nationalism, war, emigration and family. Dieses Künstlerbuch wurde von der Herausgeberin Vera Ida Müller, in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem in Berlin lebenden Fotografen Wolfram Hahn und der Gestalterin Krispin Heé konzipiert. Hahn fotografiert seit Jahren weggeworfene Plastiktüten, die sich durch die Zeit nach ihrem Gebrauch zu einzigartigen Objekten entwickeln. Die Farbe, die Form und das Volumen verändern sich durch Schmutz, Witterungseinflüsse, Abnützung und durch die Bewegung im öffentlichen Raum. Since its origins in the 1970s, punk has had an explosive influence on fashion. With its eclectic mixing of stylistic references, punk effectively introduced the postmodern concept of bricolage to the elevated precincts of haute couture and directional ready-to-wear. As a style, punk is about chaos, anarchy, and rebellion. Drawing on provocative sexual and political imagery, punks made fashion overtly hostile and threatening. This aesthetic of violence – even of cruelty – was intrinsic to the clothes themselves, which were often customized with rips, tears, and slashes, as well as studs, spikes, zippers, D-Rings, safety pins, and razor blades, among other things. This extraordinary publication examines the impact of punk’s aesthetic of brutality on high fashion, focusing on its do-it-yourself, rip-it-to-shreds ethos, the antithesis of couture’s made-to-measure exactitude. Indeed, punk’s democracy stands in opposition to fashion’s autocracy. Yet, as this book reveals, even haute couture has readily appropriated the visual and symbolic language of punk, replacing beads with studs, paillettes with safety pins, and feathers with razor blades in an attempt to capture the style’s rebellious energy. Focusing on high fashion’s embrace of punk’s aesthetic vocabulary, this book reveals how designers have looked to the quintessential anti-establishment style to originate new ideals of beauty and fashionability.

Das Künstlerbuch Undersound erscheint anlässlich der gleichnamigen Ausstellung von Moritz Fehr (*1981) im Hildesheimer Kunstverein. Die Publikation dokumentiert und kommentiert die Arbeiten Colosseum und Mojave (A Person Was Here) von Moritz Fehr und bildet einen Einblick in die technologisch und kunsthistorisch geprägte Arbeitsweise des jungen Berliner Künstlers. „Die hyperreale Darstellung von Landschaft mittels Raumbild und Raumton betont die Annahme, dass die Existenz einer unberührten Natur eine Fantasie ist: Mensch, Technik und Natur sind grundlegend und auf vielschichtige Arten und Weisen miteinander verwoben. Imagine how future archaeologists will discover countless things we have thrown away: plastic and metal objects, discarded electronics, synthetic textiles, and other items that do not easily decompose; the leftovers of an age of rampant, imperishable objects. Today, in an economic system that revolves around producing and consuming such things, we now face how to deal with them in the challenges that lie ahead. The intrinsic design ideologies of sustainability and social responsibility are often not new. This book presents a history of socially committed design strategies within the Western tradition, from William Morris to Victor Papanek, and from VKhUTEMAS to FabLab.

Hippie Modernism examines the art, architecture and design of the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s. The catalogue surveys the radical experiments that challenged societal norms while proposing new kinds of technological, ecological and political utopia. Alle Titel werden in chronologischer Reihenfolge vorgestellt. Neben Fotomontagen und Buchumschlägen, Broschüren, Titelseiten sowie anderen Druckerzeugnissen beinhaltet ein gesondertes Kapitel mindestens zwei Drittel der mit Fotomontagen Heartfields gedruckten Hefte der Arbeiter Illustrierten Zeitung (AIZ) und der Volks-Illustrierten (VI).  Die einzelnen Arbeiten sind bibliografisch erfasst und mit Erläuterungen versehen. Letztere befassen sich etwa mit dem jeweiligen Entstehungskontext, dem Wiederaufgreifen und Weiterentwickeln von Tendenzen und Motiven innerhalb seines Werkes, den Quellen der verwendeten Fotografien, dem Verhältnis zu anderen Strömungen der Grafikgestaltung und nicht zuletzt dem Zusammenspiel von Umschlaggestaltung und Text. Deux fois par ans, Initiales, revue produite et éditée par l’Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (ENSBA) de Lyon, esquisse les contours d’une galerie de « portraits en creux » en s’organisant autour de « figures-source », existantes ou fictives. Des figures d’artistes, philosophes, écrivains, architectes ou cinéastes dont le dénominateur commun est qu’elles ont « fait école » dans leur discipline et au-delà, dans les champs qu’elles ont investis ou traversés. L’œuvre, la pensée mais plus encore les méthodes déployées, les pistes explorées (et parfois avortées) ou les réseaux créés par cette figure de référence servent de sous-texte ou de script à chacune des livraisons. Réunissant, à partir d’une même figure, une série de contributions centrifuges, Initiales met ainsi en jeu un usage de la source et une expérience du temps qui ne sont ni ceux de l’historien ni ceux du scientifique, mais qui sont à l’œuvre dans le travail de l’art et qui sont au cœur de la réflexion menée depuis 2004 par le groupe de recherche ACTH (Art contemporain et temps de l’histoire) de l’ENSBA Lyon. Designer, sculpteur et peintre, Nathalie du Pasquier (née à Bordeaux en 1957) fut l’une des femmes du groupe Memphis qui, au début des années 1980, su faire bouger, autour d’Ettore Sottssas, les lignes du bon goût et les frontières de la société de consommation. Installée depuis à Milan depuis 1979, Nathalie du Pasquier a par la suite repris une intense pratique d’atelier et entretenu des rapports de bon voisinage avec ces objets du quotidien qui ont fait sa fortune pendant l’ère Memphis, et bien après, dans ses toiles aux compositions minimales ou ses modules géométriques. Cette capacité à circuler entre les formes et les pratiques, jusqu’à la « redécouverte » récente de son travail dans le champ de la mode qui a fait appel à ses services au milieu des années 2000 pour redessiner des motifs post-Memphis, est sans doute ce qui caractérise le mieux cette artiste atypique née en 1957. Et explique sans doute pourquoi son travail, jusqu’à récemment encore, semblait voué à une certaine marginalité.

This dynamic counter movement churned out heaps of photocopied, hand stapled fanzines that expressed ideas, music and works of art. Some became professional magazines. By creating its own press, the punk movement secured its place and its voice in the history of 20th century art and culture. The book Punk Press compiles the stunning graphics created by these publications, spanning from the East Village, to East London, to the Left Bank, featuring multiple collages, cutouts and handcrafted typography, standing as a visual tour through one of music’s most influential movements.
