Muita Animação showcases a selection of Portuguese party posters that are very prominent in the local landscape because of their bold design as well as their unique production method: Printed on plastic and mounted on streetposts and trees, they mostly survive the date they announce and therefore can even be seen on Google Streetview. Zurich Artist Noël Fischer started to collect these posters a few years back and has now — together with design studio Hammer — published them in this whimsical A3-sized book. This collection might as well be Jan Tschichold’s worst nightmare.

Nowadays music produces social relationships that no longer require any proprietorship. But it still cannot operate independently of the system without itself being part of a powerful logic of commercialism. This inextricable conflict is the bassline for a mix that is presented by Andrzej Steinbach and Achim Szepanski in Ultrablack of Music: Feindliche Übernahme (Hostile Takeover). Steinbach montages three different texts: a TV talk show as chamber play, a roll call of all the Red Army Faction members in the form of a score, and the computer code of a chopped-up McKinsey advertisement. In 1971 WDR broadcast “Open Ended: Pop and Co — The Other Music between Protest and Commerce!” during which Nikel Pallat, a member of the band Ton Steine Scherben, produced an axe from under his jacket and repeatedly smashed it down on the table with all his might. The table didn’t break but the gesture was unambiguous.

This illuminating new book tells the story of Doug Aitken's Station to Station project, a nomadic happening that crossed North America by train and continues to explore creativity in the modern landscape. Doug Aitken's Station to Station project is a high speed road trip through modern creativity. Over a 23-day period, the project crossed North America by train presenting a series of cultural interventions and site-specific happenings that took place in ten cities between New York and San Francisco. The train, designed as a moving, kinetic light sculpture, was at the center of it all, housing the constantly changing group of creative individuals and broadcasting experiences to a global audience. Over one hundred unique projects took place during the journey, created by today's leading contributors in contemporary art, music, literature, and culture. This volume presents the ideas that emerged from Station to Station. Stunning full-color illustrations and multiple conversations with Aitken onboard the train document the journey from East to West. In addition to 150 images, this book includes an introduction by Dean Kuipers and interviews with Beck, Bice Curiger, Scott Dadich, Dan Deacon, Olafur Eliasson, Urs Fischer, Liz Glynn, Carsten Holler, Thurston Moore, Giorgio Moroder, Ed Ruscha, Lawrence Weiner, and many more.

The mid-1960s witnessed a boom in underground and selfpublished works. Hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing not only allowed for the production of small, lowcost print runs but also promote a unique aesthetic: using wild mock-ups, »messianic amateurs« combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic strips. The typography consciously frees itself, in parallel to a liberalization of linguistic and visual forms of expression in the name of a new »sensibility«. This book (which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Weserburg in Bremen) is the first to present the underground and self-published works that came out of West Germany in such depth, while also showing the internationalcontext in which they emerged: not as an anecdotal history but as an attempt to tap into the aesthetic cosmos of a Do-It-Yourself rebellion, one that also challenges us to take a new look at the current boom in »independent publishing«, the risograph aesthetic, and so on.

For his first book, “PRESETS – DIGITAL SHORTCUTS TO SOUND”, Stefan Goldmann has talked to industry leaders, programmers, producers, musicians and fine artists to collect a comprehensive description of the world of preset audio: from synthesis to sample libraries, from instrument emulations and gear cloning to automated composition and performance – short cuts in electronic music, classical and traditional musics, guitar rock & fine arts are covered. Disruptive gear and iconic presets, their background and impact – from Korg’s M1, Yamaha’s DX7 and Roland’s 909 to Ableton Live, Native Instruments Reaktor, Sidechain compression and Auto-Tune – are discussed with unprecedented depth and clarity.

The central motif for this book is the work of Merce Cunningham and the theoretical and emotional response by writers, artists, dancers and musicians to the milestones in his creative development, from 1944 to 1999. Born in Centralia, Washington in 1919, Merce Cunningham can be considered the founder of contemporary dance as “a moving image of life”. His innovations in the field of choreography and movement date back to the 1940s, when, after meeting John Cage, Cunningham proposed separating music from dance, then turned to a chance method involving a random montage of movements. His language harmonizes and meshes with the art of Rauschenberg, Johns, Warhol, Stella, Lichtenstein and Nauman. From the 1970s to the present, he has used film, video and computers, which continue to offer him new experimental possibilities.

Since its origins in the 1970s, punk has had an explosive influence on fashion. With its eclectic mixing of stylistic references, punk effectively introduced the postmodern concept of bricolage to the elevated precincts of haute couture and directional ready-to-wear. As a style, punk is about chaos, anarchy, and rebellion. Drawing on provocative sexual and political imagery, punks made fashion overtly hostile and threatening. This aesthetic of violence – even of cruelty – was intrinsic to the clothes themselves, which were often customized with rips, tears, and slashes, as well as studs, spikes, zippers, D-Rings, safety pins, and razor blades, among other things. This extraordinary publication examines the impact of punk’s aesthetic of brutality on high fashion, focusing on its do-it-yourself, rip-it-to-shreds ethos, the antithesis of couture’s made-to-measure exactitude. Indeed, punk’s democracy stands in opposition to fashion’s autocracy. Yet, as this book reveals, even haute couture has readily appropriated the visual and symbolic language of punk, replacing beads with studs, paillettes with safety pins, and feathers with razor blades in an attempt to capture the style’s rebellious energy. Focusing on high fashion’s embrace of punk’s aesthetic vocabulary, this book reveals how designers have looked to the quintessential anti-establishment style to originate new ideals of beauty and fashionability.
