Man nannte Willy Fleckhaus (1925–1983) den „teuersten Bleistift Deutschlands“ und Deutschlands ersten Art Director. Wie kein Zweiter hat er die visuelle Kultur der noch jungen Bundesrepublik in den sechziger, siebziger und achtziger Jahre geprägt. Er verschmolz die Ratio der Schweizer Grafik mit der leidenschaftlichen Emotionalität des amerikanischen Magazindesigns. International bekannt wurde er durch sein bahnbrechendes Design der Jugendzeitschrift Twen, die durch ihr inhaltliches Konzept, großzügige Gestaltung, moderne Typografie und Fotografie gleich mehrere Generationen prägte. Fleckhaus arbeitete mit bedeutenden Fotografen seiner Zeit wie z.B. Will McBride, Thomas Höpker, Hans Feurer, Charlotte March, Ulrich Mack, Guido Mangold, Stefan Moses, Reinhart Wolf. Neben seiner Arbeit für Twen entwickelte er auch Layoutkonzepte für die Illustrierte Quick (in ihren guten Jahren) oder das Supplement der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung (ab 1980), Buchreihen wie die in den Farben des Regenbogens gehaltene Edition Suhrkamp oder die Taschenbücher des Insel Verlages. Die Autoren Michael Koetzle und Carsten Wolff (der mit seinem Büro das Buch kongenial gestaltete) schreiben endlich die umfassende Monografie über einen der prägenden wichtigsten Gestalter des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Buch erscheint zu den Ausstellungen im MAK Köln, Museum für Kunst- und Gewerbe, Hamburg und Villa Stuck, München, weitere Ausstellungen in Planung. Willy Fleckhaus (1925-1983) was one of the most innovative, creative and influential graphic designers in postwar Germany. He became internationally known for his groundbreaking work on the lifestyle magazine Twen, which attracted generations of readers with its generous layouts, modern typography and distinctive choice of house photographers such as (among others) Will McBride, Charlotte March, Guido Mangold, Reinhart Wolf. He invented the position of the „art director“, when this job description did not yet exist in Germany and earned himself the nickname of “Germany’s most expensive pencil”. Beside his longterm involvement with Twen he worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazine (from 1980 onwards), the magazine Quick, developped book series such as Edition Suhrkamp with its famous rainbow-coloured covers, exhibition designs for the Photokina trade fair in Cologne, and the logo of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk broadcasting corporation. The book, the first comprehensive monograph on Willy Fleckhaus in an international edition, includes texts by Michael Koetzle and Carsten Wolff (who also took over the book design), both long time collectors of Fleckhaus work samples. In 1949, the competition »Die besten Plakate des Jahres« (The Best Posters of the Year) took place for the first time in the newly founded Federal Republic of Germany. Designers could enter poster designs from the past year, a jury of experts awarded prizes for the best works. From 1966 onwards, there was such an annual competition in the GDR too. Many of the commended works from that time are today amongst the canon of German and international design history. The book tells the eventful history of the com­peti­tions and their changing shape over the decades. The picture section shows over 250 posters from 1949 to 2000 from a total of almost 4,000 award-winning works. In den Zeichnungen und Grafiken von Maribel Mas treten die Interferenzen zufällig auf, an den Berührungspunkten der Linien. Unter Verwendung von Schablonen aus Papier kann die Künstlerin straffe Linien ziehen, die dann wie die Saiten eines Musikinstrumentes in Schwingung versetzt werden können. Tatsächlich haben die Wiederholungsmuster serieller Musik einen bemerkenswerten Einfluss auf ihre Arbeit, besonders die minimalistischen Kompositionen von Steve Reich und das Streben nach einer „phase music“, in der identische Klangphasen aufeinander gelegt werden mit minimalen Umstellungen. Mit einem ähnlichen Ansatz spielt die Künstlerin mit der Möglichkeit einer „phase drawing“. Dafür verwendet sie nur die einfachsten Materialien: Papier und Tusche. Das Papier, mehr als eine tragende Oberfläche, wird zum aktiven Element. Den einzigartigen Charakter eines nicht industriellen, nicht standarisierten Materials zu verstehen und entdecken war ein langsamer Prozess, ermöglicht durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Handwerksmeistern in Japan, die die verschiedenen von ihr verwendeten Papiersorten aus Ganpi-, Mitsumata- und Kouzofasern herstellen. In ihrer Barcelonaer Werkstatt und der Leipziger Spinnerei hat Maribel Mas an diversen Grafikprojekten mitgewirkt, in denen sie neue Möglichkeiten der Linie entdecken konnte. Ausgehend von diesen Erfahrungen mit Lithografie, Cliché verre und Photopolymer konzentriert sie ihr Werk auf sich wiederholenden Linien als konstruktives Element. Die Interferenzen, die auf natürliche Weise in einem Arbeitsverfahren ohne vorherige Skizzen entstehen, laden zum Nachdenken ein: über die Vielfältigkeit und Unbeständigkeit der Dinge – oder aber sie eröffnen einen Spielraum, in dem der Blick mit den Linien frei spielen kann. Die Zeichnerin und Lithografin Maribel Mas ist 1967 in Caracas geboren. Im Jahr 2000 ließ sie sich in Barcelona nieder, wo sie sich auf Lithografie spezialisierte und 2005 die Druckwerkstatt „Taller Esquina“ gründete. Heute arbeitet sie gemeinsam mit Museen und Kunsthochschulen an verschiedenen grafischen Projekten. The mid-1960s witnessed a boom in underground and selfpublished works. Hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing not only allowed for the production of small, lowcost print runs but also promote a unique aesthetic: using wild mock-ups, »messianic amateurs« combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic strips. The typography consciously frees itself, in parallel to a liberalization of linguistic and visual forms of expression in the name of a new »sensibility«. This book (which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Weserburg in Bremen) is the first to present the underground and self-published works that came out of West Germany in such depth, while also showing the internationalcontext in which they emerged: not as an anecdotal history but as an attempt to tap into the aesthetic cosmos of a Do-It-Yourself rebellion, one that also challenges us to take a new look at the current boom in »independent publishing«, the risograph aesthetic, and so on.

Dafi Kühne is a Swiss designer who works with analogue and digital techniques to produce fresh and unique letterpress-printed posters. Using very different kinds of tools — from a computer to a pantograph — for his compositions, he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Dafi Kühne embraces the labor involved in the entire process of creating a poster, from initial idea to finished product. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary for how to communicate through type and form in a truly contemporary way. Never retro, his work is a clever response to the search for new possibilities of graphic expression: true print.

Kalligrafie des Nordens Naturstudien in Zeichen Anläßlich seines 80. Geburtstages erscheint erstmalig eine Monographie über das Werk des Malers und Grafikers Krister Follin. Die abgebildeten Werke entstammen dem Nachlass des Künstlers, der sich nach wie vor in privater Aufbewahrung in Glemmingebro befindet. Eine Vielzahl seiner Werke befinden sich unter anderem im Nationalmuseum Stockholm, der Kunstvereinigung Lundensias in Lund, der Universitätsbibliothek Lund, Göteborg Museum, Eskilstuna Museum, der Staatsbibliothek Malmö.

For two decades until his death in 2003, keyboard rock star Wesley Willis (*1963) rendered Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway and geometric skyline with ballpoint pen and felt-tip-marker lines. Known primarily to an alternative public for the uniquely singular sounds from his Technics KN 2000 and surreal texts which explored the themes of daily life such as fast food, bus lines, cultural trends or violent confrontations with super heroes, Wesley Willis’s drawings testify to the years he spent sitting in on drawing classes at the Illinois Institute of Technology, manifest in drafting techniques Willis never abandoned but, to singular effect, refused to master. A series of small untitled drawings in blue ink from the early 80s depict big rigs, tractor trailers, rolling stock, and transit-authority buses in side and isometric views. His sketches, often in color, explore almost obsessively the congested freeway which connects Chicago’s South Side with the city’s downtown – a metaphor for his wish to bridge the two worlds. At age of 28, Willis began to hear voices. He called then his “demons.” According to him writing, performing, and recording help quiet the voices in his head. Wesley Willis died on August 21, 2003 at age 40 in Skokie, Illinois. Delmes & Zander Cologne in Cologne first showed the work of Wesley Willis in Germany in 2013 and has represented the artist ever since.

Few of the sleeves showcased here are beautiful in the normal sense of the word. But they all have an urgency and an exhilarating disregard for design conventions that makes them exceptional. They are all clarion calls for independence and freedom from pop industry norms. The work in this book is culled from the record collections of designer (and Unit Editions co-founder) Tony Brook, and leading punk scholar Russ Bestley. As one of the world’s leading authorities on punk and post-punk music, Russ has contributed an insightful essay to the book. The book also features interviews with designer Malcolm Garrett, Mute founder Daniel Miller and Sniffin’ Glue editor and musician Mark Perry.

This dynamic counter movement churned out heaps of photocopied, hand stapled fanzines that expressed ideas, music and works of art. Some became professional magazines. By creating its own press, the punk movement secured its place and its voice in the history of 20th century art and culture. The book Punk Press compiles the stunning graphics created by these publications, spanning from the East Village, to East London, to the Left Bank, featuring multiple collages, cutouts and handcrafted typography, standing as a visual tour through one of music’s most influential movements.

Im aufstrebenden New York der Mad Men wurde sie Werbers Lieblingsschrift und fand von dort den Weg zurück ins Wirtschaftswunderland der Fünfziger- und Sechzigerjahre. Kaum eine Schrift hat einen derartigen Type-Hype erlebt und ausgelöst – und keine andere hat je ein Denkmal auf dem Mond bekommen. Dieses Buch ist eine kulturelle und ästhetische Zeitreise zurück in die Zukunft.
