Ellen Akimoto completed her studies as a Meisterschülerin in the class of Annette Schröter at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig in 2016, and previously earned her BFA at California State University Chico.

Das Künstlerbuch Ferne Laute von Benjamin Dittrich besteht aus 65 schwarz-weißen Linolschnitten der Serie “KEN67”. “KEN67” basiert auf dem Lexikon “Kleine Enzyklopädie Natur”. Die darin enthaltenen Diagramme wurden in Einzelteile zerlegt und jeglicher Text wurde entfernt. Per Zufallsprinzip wurden jeweils fünf Elemente ausgewählt, zu einem neuen Diagrammkonstrukt zusammengefügt und dann als Linolschnitt umgesetzt.

Paul Mpagi Sepuya’s Studio Work collects formal portraits, snapshots, still-lifes and documentation of the studio space, created during his residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem from 2010–2011. The artist writes: “I am exploring how the studio environment, as the site of creation, editing, and accumulation affects and frames portraiture, and the performance of portraiture.”

Any Part, Any Form is a follow-up to London-based graphic designer Radim Peško’s Informal Meetings (2010), a collection of photographs made during travels and wanderings to different places. This volume brings back found compositions and situations where seemingly unremarkable encounters between space, architecture and water suggest their own stories.

Nowadays music produces social relationships that no longer require any proprietorship. But it still cannot operate independently of the system without itself being part of a powerful logic of commercialism. This inextricable conflict is the bassline for a mix that is presented by Andrzej Steinbach and Achim Szepanski in Ultrablack of Music: Feindliche Übernahme (Hostile Takeover). Steinbach montages three different texts: a TV talk show as chamber play, a roll call of all the Red Army Faction members in the form of a score, and the computer code of a chopped-up McKinsey advertisement. In 1971 WDR broadcast “Open Ended: Pop and Co — The Other Music between Protest and Commerce!” during which Nikel Pallat, a member of the band Ton Steine Scherben, produced an axe from under his jacket and repeatedly smashed it down on the table with all his might. The table didn’t break but the gesture was unambiguous.

Edgar Leciejewski spent six months as an artist-in-residence with Fogo Island Arts in 2014. Tones brings together new work stemming from the Leipzig-based artist’s time on the island, including large-scale collages, photographs of natural elements, and precarious sculptures composed of objects found on the shore. Taken together the works are a collection and an archive of time shown in modern images, raising questions on how we contemplate ideas of nature. Over the past decade, German artist Michael Riedel (born 1972) has incorporated a wide range of media into his practice, including works on canvas, fabric works, film and video, audio recordings and installations. A central focus of his work is the publishing and production of artist’s books, catalogues, brochures, posters and cards. In 2000, Riedel and Dennis Loesch launched a collaborative project in an abandoned building in Frankfurt. Using the building’s address–Oskar-von-Miller Strasse 16–as the name for their new space, they created an experimental laboratory where they restaged cultural events held at other locations throughout the city, including readings, film screenings, exhibitions and concerts–sometimes days or weeks after the original event. With the motto of “record, label, playback,” a group of young artists reiterated the language of a city’s cultural offerings, exploring the faults of transmission and transference created by this decontextualization. Oskar documents this project.

In the last ten years, the Dutch photographer Erik van der Weijde has been responsible for over fifty publications: these include not only slim photozines and simply produced brochures but also voluminous cloth-bound books — many of them distributed via his own publishing house 4478ZINE. This Is Not My Book provides for the first time an overview of his work, which constitutes one of the most important artistic positions at the interface between photography and independent publishing. The book uses large-format representations to show the lines of connection between the individual publications. It also contains van der Weijde’s 4478ZINE publishing manifesto and other texts as well as five conversations with the publishers Anne König and Jan Wenzel. This Is Not My Book indicates a full stop, an act of punctuation set down by the author with his published work.

Edition Bauhaus 46 When Dessau was bombed in early 1945, the Director’s House and Moholy-Nagy’s Master House were reduced to rubble as well. After the Dessau Masters’ Houses – epitome of the 20th-century artists’ colony – had been restored to their original state in the 1990s, a debate began on the reconstruction of the two houses destroyed in the war. In 2010, after consultation with the British star architect David Chipperfield, the decision was made to recreate the Master Houses of Gropius and Moholy-Nagy using contemporary means, rather than rebuilding them 1:1. And so they have now been reconstructed on the basis of designs by the Berlin firm Bruno-Fioretti-Marquez, as innovative reductions and abstractions of the original houses. This volume describes the chequered history of the Dessau Masters’ Houses, presenting the reconstructed buildings for the first time in book form, with photographs by Armin Linke and Heidi Specker.

At the beginning of the 1970s US American physicist Gerard K. O’Neill developed the first ideas for colonizing space. Shortly thereafter, Stewart Brand, cybercommunard and editor of the Whole Earth Catalog, took up these ideas and published the book Space Colonies. In this and in other editions of the CoEvolution Quarterly, the issue of whether space might already be colonized in the year 2000 is discussed. Fabian Reimann’s Space Colonies. A Galactic Freeman’s Journal refers to these publications. In his photo essay he assembles historical, present-day, and speculative material, which he combines with fictional and factual stories to create a composite of different images of the world.

In »Dialogues« führt die in Brüssel lebende deutsche Künstlerin Stephanie Kiwitt zum ersten Mal verschiedene Arbeiten der letzten Jahre, die sie in Form von Publikationen und Ausstellungsprojekten realisiert hat, in einem gemeinsamen Kontext zusammen. Neue Anschlüsse von Bild zu Bild entstehen, die es so nie gegeben hat, jedes neue Bild ist ein Sprung in der Zeit und im Raum, zwischen Belgien und Marseille, Prag und Gent … Oder handelt es sich eher um Kollisionen, denn um neue Anschlüsse? Anschnitte, Ausschnitte, Bilder, die über ihren Rand hinausreichen, die weiterführen, woanders hinführen – vielleicht in ein anderes Bild hinein? In besonderer Weise gelingt es Stephanie Kiwitt, ihre Bilder, Serien und Bücher an einer Grenze anzusiedeln, an der eine Beschreibung etwas eröffnet und ermöglicht, anstatt es auszuformulieren und abzuschließen, eine Grenze, an der die Bilder etwas zur Verfügung stellen anstatt es zu demonstrieren. Diese Öffnung ereignet sich nicht ohne zutun, sie muss in Gang gesetzt werden – durch Bilder, die nicht zufällig entstehen und auch nicht beiläufig, die aber nicht so tun, als wüssten sie es immer schon besser, Bilder, denen eine Zurückhaltung eigen ist, durch die sie einen Dialog eröffnen, sowohl zwischen den Bildern selbst als auch mit ihren BetrachterInnen.

Disobedient Bodies: JW Anderson at The Hepworth Wakefield has been published alongside the exhibition of the same name, curated by JW Anderson and opening The Hepworth Wakefield in March 2017. The book – made in a close collaboration between Jonathan Anderson, Andrew Bonacina and OK-RM – acts as an alternative exhibition space in which the pairings and combinations that unfold within The Hepworth’s galleries come in to play with images from Anderson’s collaborative photographic projects with Jamie Hawkesworth. The book object comprises a series of interleaved sections amassing 142 pages and featuring works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi, Eileen Gray, Sarah Lucas, Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Dior, Helmut Lang and many more, alongside contributions from Anderson’s own collections.

This illuminating new book tells the story of Doug Aitken's Station to Station project, a nomadic happening that crossed North America by train and continues to explore creativity in the modern landscape. Doug Aitken's Station to Station project is a high speed road trip through modern creativity. Over a 23-day period, the project crossed North America by train presenting a series of cultural interventions and site-specific happenings that took place in ten cities between New York and San Francisco. The train, designed as a moving, kinetic light sculpture, was at the center of it all, housing the constantly changing group of creative individuals and broadcasting experiences to a global audience. Over one hundred unique projects took place during the journey, created by today's leading contributors in contemporary art, music, literature, and culture. Die Polaroids waren Dash Snows “Eintritt” in die Kunstwelt und wurden der Legende nach von ihm gemacht, um Erlebnisse zu dokumentieren, an die er sich aufgrund seines Rauschzustandes sonst nicht erinnern könnte. Die sehr spontan wirkenden Aufnahmen zeigen skurrile Alltagsszenen, Partys, Drogenkonsum, sexuelle Anspielungen und sehr intime Portraits aus der Umgebung des Künstlers. In vielen Polaroids taucht der Künstler selbst auf und wird damit gleichzeitig zum Verwalter und Subjekt seiner Bilder.

In seinem Atelier legt Tillmans zur Übersicht Bilder auf langen Tischen aus, bevor sie an der Wand oder im Buch ihren Platz finden. Diese Arbeitsweise wird hier zum Konzept, das Buch zur Installation: In Manual ordnet er eigene Photographien, malerische Arbeiten und Texte sowie vorgefundene Zeitungsartikel zu einer assoziativen Gesamtschau an. Das Material verdichtet sich so zu einer komplexen künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung mit unterschiedlichen sozialen und politischen Themen, die der Künstler seit Jahren verfolgt. Tillmans schafft damit eine überzeugende Ergänzung zu seinen rein photographischen Arbeiten. Für Wolfgang Tillmans sind Installation und Präsentation seiner Arbeit ebenso wichtig wie die Arbeit selbst. Mit Manual assoziiert er ein “Handbuch” für die Erforschung der sichtbaren Welt. Es versteht sich aber auch als “Anleitung” zu Tillmans’ Oeuvre, als Kompendium, in dem der Künstler seine persönliche Sicht auf die eigene Arbeit vorstellt.

In den Zeichnungen und Grafiken von Maribel Mas treten die Interferenzen zufällig auf, an den Berührungspunkten der Linien. Unter Verwendung von Schablonen aus Papier kann die Künstlerin straffe Linien ziehen, die dann wie die Saiten eines Musikinstrumentes in Schwingung versetzt werden können. Tatsächlich haben die Wiederholungsmuster serieller Musik einen bemerkenswerten Einfluss auf ihre Arbeit, besonders die minimalistischen Kompositionen von Steve Reich und das Streben nach einer „phase music“, in der identische Klangphasen aufeinander gelegt werden mit minimalen Umstellungen. Mit einem ähnlichen Ansatz spielt die Künstlerin mit der Möglichkeit einer „phase drawing“. Dafür verwendet sie nur die einfachsten Materialien: Papier und Tusche. Das Papier, mehr als eine tragende Oberfläche, wird zum aktiven Element. Den einzigartigen Charakter eines nicht industriellen, nicht standarisierten Materials zu verstehen und entdecken war ein langsamer Prozess, ermöglicht durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Handwerksmeistern in Japan, die die verschiedenen von ihr verwendeten Papiersorten aus Ganpi-, Mitsumata- und Kouzofasern herstellen. In ihrer Barcelonaer Werkstatt und der Leipziger Spinnerei hat Maribel Mas an diversen Grafikprojekten mitgewirkt, in denen sie neue Möglichkeiten der Linie entdecken konnte. Ausgehend von diesen Erfahrungen mit Lithografie, Cliché verre und Photopolymer konzentriert sie ihr Werk auf sich wiederholenden Linien als konstruktives Element. Die Interferenzen, die auf natürliche Weise in einem Arbeitsverfahren ohne vorherige Skizzen entstehen, laden zum Nachdenken ein: über die Vielfältigkeit und Unbeständigkeit der Dinge – oder aber sie eröffnen einen Spielraum, in dem der Blick mit den Linien frei spielen kann. Die Zeichnerin und Lithografin Maribel Mas ist 1967 in Caracas geboren. Im Jahr 2000 ließ sie sich in Barcelona nieder, wo sie sich auf Lithografie spezialisierte und 2005 die Druckwerkstatt „Taller Esquina“ gründete. Heute arbeitet sie gemeinsam mit Museen und Kunsthochschulen an verschiedenen grafischen Projekten. This volume presents an overview of the Canadian collective oeuvre—an oeuvre still haunted by Miss General Idea, a fictive character who was at once muse and object, image and concept. Founded in Toronto in 1969 by Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal—both disappeared in 1994—and AA Bronson, the trio adopted a generic identity that “freed it from the tyranny of individual genius.” Their complex intermingling of reality and fiction took the form of a transgressive and often parodic take on art and society. Treating the image as a virus infiltrating every aspect of the real world, General Idea set out to colonize it, modify its content and so come up with an alternative version of reality. Paintings, installations, sculptures, photographs, videos, magazines, and TV programs: General Idea's is an authentically multimedia oeuvre, that has lost nothing of its freshness and can now be seen as anticipating certain aspects of a current art scene undergoing radical transformation. The book covers the collective's main areas of concern and themes, such as the artist and the creative process, glamour as a creative tool, art's links with the media and mass culture, architecture and archaeology, sexuality and AIDS, etc. Including newly commissioned essays and republished texts, it is richly illustrated with documents and reproductions of the most important projects realized by General Idea from 1969 to 1994. Seiichi Furuya’s Dresden photographs from 1984/85 are a most unlikely document — a view of daily life in the latter days of the GDR recorded by a Japanese photographer, who had been a major player in the photography scene in Austria since the beginning of the 1980s. Furuya came to Dresden as an interpreter for a Japanese construction company. His pictures are private — a young family in an intimate setting, their deep-seated anxieties and moments of happiness — and it is more in passing that he records everyday life and society. His view from the outside, a stranger’s way of seeing things, has no equivalent in the art photography of the GDR. In 2015 an exhibition project brought Furuya back to Dresden, where he took a series of new pictures: photographs of familiar places, onto which capitalist life has now inscribed itself, thirty years on, and of the Pegida demonstrations that have completely transformed the image of the city.

Newspaper was started in 1969 by Steve Lawrence, and it ran for nine issues till 1971. It was a small press publication that spotlighted work by figures of the Downtown NY scene. A pivotal publication for the time, Newspaper was a product of the conceptual art movement and an emphasis on media systems and subversion. In 1970 it was part of the Information show at MoMA — widely acknowledged as the first large survey on conceptual art. Over the years and after the AIDS crisis, Newspaper was lost and Steve Lawrence's work faded into obscurity. In researching the original, NEWSPAPER has been inspired to make a call for the return of the transgression of earlier queer forefathers — an intellectual awareness, openness and love deeply informed by countercultural thinking. It is an exercise of looking back in order to move forward. As particular queer images of beauty, body, consciousness, and identity have emerged in mainstream visual culture and media, damage has been done. Over time they have established themselves in most media. This will be a space for artists, living and dead, that loudly or quietly promote an investigation or redefinition of these images in order to express their own sensibility.

POV paper is a quarterly published by the Swiss gender and sexuality festival La Fête du Slip . POV paper explores the themes of gender and sexuality as well, with purpose to focus on photography, illustration and writing. At the core of POV paper, is a developing exploration of new aesthetic approaches to porn. For each issue, POV paper brings together a photographer from the art world, and performers from the alternative porn world. The paper features articles, interviews, short stories, poems, and reviews, all exclusive and yet unpublished work, with contributors from around the world.

Das Buch zur Einzelausstellung von Bastian Muhr im Museum Wiesbaden dokumentiert die dort gezeigten, großformatigen Handzeichnungen des Künstlers und bietet einen tieferen Einstieg in seine Arbeitsweise. Muhr überprüft mit einer individuellen Technik die Zeichnung auf ihre formalen Eigenschaften. Die Ausprägungen des verwendeten Materials sowie der Charakter der handwerklichen Ausführung rücken dabei in den Vordergrund. Der Bildcharakter der Blätter verliert seine Wichtigkeit; Kompositions- und Richtungsfragen spielen eine untergeordnete Rolle. Zudem überlässt Muhr den Entstehungsprozess seiner Arbeiten einer Kombination von Systematik und Zufall. Die Zeichnungen erreichen auf diese Weise nicht nur eine betörende Sinnlichkeit, sondern stellen klassische Strategien der Bildfindung infrage.

Hollywood, 1927. California, 1927. America, 1927. The world, 1927. It was a year like any other year — brim-filled with chaos and calamity, success and sensation — the minutia of everything and nothing. When we broke proverbial ground on Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, we re-animated a strange and special part of Los Angeles' story — a historic compound built in 1927 by the newly founded independent United Artists. We asked celebrated film and art director Mike Mills to create the art for all of the guest rooms in our new hotel, he designed a webwork of pieces highlighting the events of that fateful year — with the work in each individual room contributing to a sweeping property-wide narrative. We've bound these micro-stories together into a special yearbook — cataloging both Mill's elegant work, and the year that long-ago was.

Rock/Music Writings collects Dan Graham’s influential writings about rock and roll music and its cultural impact. First published in 2009, Rock/Music Writings includes thirteen essays written between 1968 and 1988, most of which were originally printed in small magazines or journals, including Extensions, Fusion, REAL LIFE, and ZG. Graham was a friend and supporter of many musicians active in the No Wave scene that was centered around New York City in the late ’70s. In addition to collaborating with musicians during this period, Graham created “Rock My Religion,” a video that demonstrates parallels between rock music culture and religious rituals, such as Shaker dances and revivalist meetings. The work’s related text, also titled “Rock My Religion,” is included in Rock/Music Writings, along with texts such as “The End of Liberalism,” “New Wave Rock and the Feminine,” “McLaren’s Children,” and “Artist as Producer.” These texts examine the lyrics and backgrounds of bands like The Beatles, The Kinks, Devo, The Ramones, the Patti Smith Group, the Sex Pistols, and Bow Wow Wow, relating them to consumerism and visual art movements, including Abstract Expressionism and Pop art. Dan Graham is an artist based in New York. Since the 1960s, he has produced a wide range of work and writing that engages in a highly analytical discourse on the historical, social, and ideological functions of contemporary cultural systems. Architecture, popular music, video, and television are among the focuses of his investigations, which he articulates through essays, performances, installations, videotapes, and architectural/sculptural designs.

The first publication on the work of Dutch power trio Experimental Jetset features almost two decades of graphic design praxis. Rather than a monolithic monograph, it is a very loose, personal archive, with essays by Linda van Deursen, Mark Owens, and Ian Svenonius, plus two photographic chapters with a selection of work by the studio, covering both printed matter and the documentation of site-specific pieces and installations. To conclude is a glossary-like anthology of texts (fragments of interviews, lectures, correspondence, etc.) previously written by Experimental Jetset, selected, edited, and structured by Jon Sueda.
