“On Saturday, 14 November 2015, as we were walking through the city, we saw that the people selling fruit and vegetables on the Boulevard de Rochechouart had already unloaded the crates from their cars before realizing that the state of emergency that had been imposed on Paris also affected their market. They stood around, uncertain what to do. They weren’t quite ready to pack up their perishable goods again. The terrorist attacks had had an impact on them too. It was only later that I realized that I should have recorded the situation, that it revealed more about the day than the endless repeats of reports from the scene and rituals of grief.” This was the entry Jan Wenzel, publisher of Spector Books, posted in his Facebook blog. The État d’urgence affected everyone who was in the capital at the time. Like so many of her colleagues, Bettina Lockemann had travelled to the city to attend Paris Photo. On 14 November 2015 she roamed through the city with her camera, recording the oppressive atmosphere in its streets and squares.

Since the 1979 revolution, Iran has developed its own image culture, with public space serving primarily as a transit zone and a screen where state-sanctioned religious ideology is projected. Pride of place is given to memorials to the first Gulf war (the Iran–Iraq War of 1980–88), which is part of the founding myth of the Islamic Republic. Between 2011 and 2014 Oliver Hartung produced a work on Iran, typological series of images depicting monuments, murals, architecture, and war cemeteries. In it he creates a portrait of an exceptionally photogenic country that is nevertheless largely unknown in the West: in Damghan a colossal ear of wheat acts as a street lamp and in Isfahan a hand grenade with an Internet symbol suggests the potential risks inherent in the world wide web. Das Berliner Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum befindet sich gleich am S-Bahnhof Tiergarten, an der Straße des 17. Juni Ecke Klopstockstraße: Es wurde 1978 gegründet, als der Großteil der Straßenbeleuchtung längst elektrisch funktionierte und die technisch wie ästhetisch altmodischen Modelle mehr und mehr aussortiert wurden. Etwa 90 Laternen sind entlang von Parkwegen permanent ausgestellt: die Modelle stammen aus den Jahren 1826 bis 1956 und aus insgesamt 36 Städten. Gleich außerhalb des Parks, die Straße des 17. Juni flankierend, sind zwei elektrische Straßenlaternen zu finden, die weder Teil einer Ausstellung sind noch irgendeine Art von Beschriftung aufweisen: die einen östlich, die anderen westlich der kreuzenden S-Bahn-Gleise. Ihnen ist diese Publikation gewidmet. Im Gründungsjahr des Freilichtmuseums, 1978, widmete der Religionsphilosoph Klaus Heinrich an der Freien Universität Berlin seine Vorlesung des Sommersemesters dem Thema des deutschen Klassizismus in der Architektur, oder genauer: der Willfährigkeit des Klassizismus zwischen Karl Friedrich Schinkel und Albert Speer. Sein Zitat bespricht die Speerlaterne, links. Einige Jahre früher, 1964, veröffentlichte der Verleger und Schriftsteller Wolf Jobst Siedler ein Buch mit dem Titel Die gemordete Stadt. For two decades until his death in 2003, keyboard rock star Wesley Willis (*1963) rendered Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway and geometric skyline with ballpoint pen and felt-tip-marker lines. Known primarily to an alternative public for the uniquely singular sounds from his Technics KN 2000 and surreal texts which explored the themes of daily life such as fast food, bus lines, cultural trends or violent confrontations with super heroes, Wesley Willis’s drawings testify to the years he spent sitting in on drawing classes at the Illinois Institute of Technology, manifest in drafting techniques Willis never abandoned but, to singular effect, refused to master. A series of small untitled drawings in blue ink from the early 80s depict big rigs, tractor trailers, rolling stock, and transit-authority buses in side and isometric views. His sketches, often in color, explore almost obsessively the congested freeway which connects Chicago’s South Side with the city’s downtown – a metaphor for his wish to bridge the two worlds. At age of 28, Willis began to hear voices. He called then his “demons.” According to him writing, performing, and recording help quiet the voices in his head. Wesley Willis died on August 21, 2003 at age 40 in Skokie, Illinois. Delmes & Zander Cologne in Cologne first showed the work of Wesley Willis in Germany in 2013 and has represented the artist ever since.

Nach über 30 Jahren kehrte ARCH+ Chefredakteur Anh-Linh Ngo für dieses Heft erstmals in sein Geburtsland zurück. Jenes Land, das sich als Präfix eines Krieges in den Sprachgebrauch eingenistet hat. Jener Krieg, vor dessen politischen Folgen seine Familie floh, als er noch ein Kind war. Als Flüchtlingskind kam er vor 33 Jahren nach Deutschland, als „Kontingentflüchtling“, wie es damals im schönsten Bürokratendeutsch hieß. Über diese Wortschöpfung wären heute viele froh, sind doch (Ober-)Grenzen wieder en vogue. Angesichts der spürbaren Verschiebungen und Relativierungen, die die Globalisierung mit sich bringt, sehnen sich viele Menschen wieder nach festen Grenzen und klaren kulturellen Identitäten. Der gegenwärtige Auftrieb „identitärer Bewegungen“ ist ein Zeichen dafür. Wir leben in Zeiten, die bestimmt sind von Angst – Angst vor Überfremdung, vor dem Verlust der „eigenen“ Kultur. In diesem Kontext könnte man die beiden Ausgaben über Vietnam, von denen dies die erste ist, aus der individuellen Perspektive des Migranten als eine klischeehafte Suche nach den eigenen Wurzeln und aus politischer Sicht als Versuch einer lokalen Identitätskonstruktion missverstehen. Doch gerade vor dem Hintergrund der gegenwärtigen politischen Krise sind beide Hefte explizit als die Suche nach einem Ausweg aus den Kulturalisierungsfallen zu verstehen, die derzeit überall lauern. Um hier die Hauptaussage vorwegzunehmen: Identität ist kein Nullsummenspiel, bei dem sich das „Fremde“ und das „Eigene“ gegenseitig verdrängen. Die Entwurfsansätze der vorgestellten Büros entstehen in der Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen sozialen Problemen und lokalen kulturellen Praktiken. Sie sind in ihren Ergebnissen spezifisch, ohne ihre universalen Grundprinzipien zu verleugnen. Auf der Suche nach einem zukunftsfähigen Weg wendet sich diese Avantgarde wieder heimischen Materialien, traditionellen Bauweisen und Typologien zu, um Alternativen zum Einsatz fehleranfälliger und teurer Technik anzubieten. Ihre Zeitgenossenschaft beziehen die präsentierten Projekte zum einen aus dem freien Umgang mit vorgefundenen Traditionen, zum anderen aus konkreten Alltagspraktiken. Doch auch internationale Einflüsse wie etwa von Anna Heringer, Diébédo Francis Kéré oder der japanischen Architektur werden herangezogen. The central motif for this book is the work of Merce Cunningham and the theoretical and emotional response by writers, artists, dancers and musicians to the milestones in his creative development, from 1944 to 1999. Born in Centralia, Washington in 1919, Merce Cunningham can be considered the founder of contemporary dance as “a moving image of life”. His innovations in the field of choreography and movement date back to the 1940s, when, after meeting John Cage, Cunningham proposed separating music from dance, then turned to a chance method involving a random montage of movements. His language harmonizes and meshes with the art of Rauschenberg, Johns, Warhol, Stella, Lichtenstein and Nauman. The American photographer Collier Schorr has been working in Southern Germany for the past 12 years, compiling a documentary and fictional portrait of a small town inhabited by historical apparitions. For Schorr, the German landscape is a map of her own history, both imagined and inherited. Combining the overlapping roles of war photographer, traveling portraitist, anthropologist and family historian, the series Forest and Fields (Wald und Wiesen) tells the interwoven stories of a place and time determined by memory, nationalism, war, emigration and family. Since its origins in the 1970s, punk has had an explosive influence on fashion. With its eclectic mixing of stylistic references, punk effectively introduced the postmodern concept of bricolage to the elevated precincts of haute couture and directional ready-to-wear. As a style, punk is about chaos, anarchy, and rebellion. Drawing on provocative sexual and political imagery, punks made fashion overtly hostile and threatening. This aesthetic of violence – even of cruelty – was intrinsic to the clothes themselves, which were often customized with rips, tears, and slashes, as well as studs, spikes, zippers, D-Rings, safety pins, and razor blades, among other things. This extraordinary publication examines the impact of punk’s aesthetic of brutality on high fashion, focusing on its do-it-yourself, rip-it-to-shreds ethos, the antithesis of couture’s made-to-measure exactitude. Indeed, punk’s democracy stands in opposition to fashion’s autocracy. Yet, as this book reveals, even haute couture has readily appropriated the visual and symbolic language of punk, replacing beads with studs, paillettes with safety pins, and feathers with razor blades in an attempt to capture the style’s rebellious energy. Focusing on high fashion’s embrace of punk’s aesthetic vocabulary, this book reveals how designers have looked to the quintessential anti-establishment style to originate new ideals of beauty and fashionability.

Imagine how future archaeologists will discover countless things we have thrown away: plastic and metal objects, discarded electronics, synthetic textiles, and other items that do not easily decompose; the leftovers of an age of rampant, imperishable objects. Today, in an economic system that revolves around producing and consuming such things, we now face how to deal with them in the challenges that lie ahead. Hippie Modernism examines the art, architecture and design of the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s. The catalogue surveys the radical experiments that challenged societal norms while proposing new kinds of technological, ecological and political utopia. It includes the counter-design proposals of Victor Papanek and the anti-design polemics of Global Tools; the radical architectural visions of Archigram, Superstudio, Haus-Rucker-Co and ONYX; the installations of Ken Isaacs, Joan Hills, Mark Boyle, Hélio Oiticica and Neville D'Almeida; the experimental films of Jordan Belson, Bruce Conner and John Whitney; posters and prints by Emory Douglas, Corita Kent and Victor Moscoso; documentation of performances by the Diggers and the Cockettes; publications such as Oz and The Whole Earth Catalog; books by Marshall McLuhan and Buckminster Fuller; and much more. While the turbulent social history of the 1960s is well known, its cultural production remains comparatively under-examined. In this substantial volume, scholars explore a range of practices such as radical architectural and anti-design movements emerging in Europe and North America; the print revolution in the graphic design of books, posters and magazines; and new forms of cultural practice that merged street theater and radical politics.
