Enamoured of decorative ornament, posing a challenge to all-powerful modernism, and drawing inspiration from the realm of architecture, the provocative designs of Italian group Memphis (1981–1988) caused something of a stir. Less Is a Bore: Reflections on Memphis contextualizes the creative universe of the designers around Ettore Sottsass in relation to the works of artists Raymond Barion, Eva Berendes, Barbara Kasten, Graham Little, and Tobias Rehberger. The book outlines their shared stylistic history in design and art, which has been given impetus by the phenomena of mass culture as well as by fashion and the history of culture and is reflected in an obsessive enthusiasm for the expressive possibilities of surfaces. The book classifies Memphis in the context of the design, art, and pop culture of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Book is published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation Dusseldorf (29 October 2016 – 11 February 2017).

Am 3.12.1935 vermerkte Bruno Taut in seinem Tagebuch, das er während seines Exils in Japan in seinem kleinen Wohnhaus am Shorinzan-Tempel in Takasaki führte, auf Seite 771: „Die Ahornblätter sind verwelkt. Gestern trieb sie der Wind zu mir ins Haus. – … – – Nun begann ich mit meiner großen Arbeit über Architektur: „Überlegungen“. Ich schreibe es nur für mich; sollte ich bald sterben, so mag es mein Nachlaß sein. Fertig: „Was ist Architektur?“, “Architektur und Gesellschaft“. Es ist selten schwer, aber auch selten befriedigend. Auch Selbstkritik, Feststellung von Verirrungen, auch eigenen. Wenn ich überlege: wie ganz anders wäre mein Leben verlaufen, wenn ich vor 15 Jahren so gedacht hätte. Nachgedacht, wie heute! Doch daß ich damals gerade so dachte, brachte alle praktischen Erfahrungen, Reisen, Studien mit sich und in großartiger Logik mein heutiges Denken. Ich bin dankbar. Wie leicht wiegt dagegen der allzunatürliche leise Heiminstinkt. – Dies ist jetzt meine eigentliche Arbeit, langsam, mit Bedacht. Die Arbeit sonst wird dagegen zum Spiel nebenbei.“ Als Bruno Taut diesen Eintrag schrieb, hat er gerade die Arbeit an seinem Buch „Das japanische Haus und sein Leben“ unterbrochen, um sich seinem neuen Projekt, den „Architekturüberlegungen“ zu widmen. Obwohl er während seiner Laufbahn als praktizierender Architekt in Berlin bereits zahlreiche Bücher veröffentlicht hatte, nimmt er sich nun endlich die Freiheit, in einer zusammenhängenden Argumentation grundsätzlich über Architektur zu reflektieren. In seine „Überlegungen“ fließen die „praktischen Erfahrungen, Reisen, Studien“ mit hinein, die er im Laufe der letzten zehn Jahre in Deutschland, in der Sowjetunion und in Japan gemacht hat. 1937 kam die Türkei-Erfahrung hinzu, als er seine „Überlegungen“ dann zu Vorlesungen, der „Architekturlehre“, ausarbeitete. (Zur Entstehungsgeschichte der „Architekturüberlegungen“ im Zusammenhang mit der „Architekturlehre“ siehe auch das ausführliche Nachwort des Herausgebers zur „Architekturlehre“ in: ARCH+ 194 „Bruno Taut. Architekturlehre“, Oktober 2009.) Taut, der erfolgreiche Architekt Berliner Siedlungen in der Weimarer Republik, war zum Ende des Jahres 1935, nach zweieinhalb Jahren Emigration in Japan, vom praktischen Bauen so gut wie abgeschnitten. Bauaufträge kamen über Entwurfsvorschläge nicht hinaus, durchführen konnte er schließlich einen Innenausbau, die Gesellschaftsräume der Hyuga Villa in Atami, und den Einbau von Schattendächern über den großen Fensteröffnungen der Villa Okura in Tokio (Architekt Gonkuro Kume), die er auch mit Möbeln ausstatten konnte. Seinen Lebensunterhalt verdiente er mit dem Entwurf von Gebrauchsgegenständen und Möbeln, die in der kleinen Stadt Takasaki, nordwestlich von Tokio, handwerklich hergestellt wurden. Seine freie Zeit widmete er ganz dem Studium japanischer Kultur. Im Auftrag von Verlagen schrieb er in dieser Zeit drei umfangreiche Bücher: 1933 „Nippon mit europäischen Augen gesehen“, 1934 „Japans Kunst mit europäischen Augen gesehen“ und 1935 „Das japanische Haus und sein Leben“. Das letztere Werk, das er im Dezember 1935 nahezu fertig geschrieben hatte, sollte durch eine eingehende Analyse die kulturellen und klimatischen Voraussetzungen für das Bauen und Leben der Menschen in Japan offenlegen, um so den in Japan praktizierenden Architekten eine Grundlage für ihre Arbeit zu bieten. In seinem japanischen Tagebuch notierte er immer wieder die Überzeugung: „Kunst als Qualität ist keine ästhetische Abstraktion, sondern die notwendige unentbehrliche Schaffung von Formen für das anständige Zusammenleben der Menschen. Je reiner und je direkter, freier von offiziellen Illusionen, umso höher die Qualität.“ (6.7.1934) Diese Einsicht ist vor allem auch angesichts der Entwicklungen im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland wie in der stalinistischen Sowjetunion zu verstehen. In der japanischen Kultur, vor allem im Wohnhaus und seinem Garten, sah Taut eine form-vollendete Beziehung zum Klima und zur Natur verwirklicht – eine Form, welche durchaus als zeitgemäßes Vorbild für die moderne Architektur dienen konnte.

In fact, he leaves nothing to chance, staging each setting down to the smallest detail. Deliberate selection of the space and precise lighting have become his trademark. His unconventional style has made Mühe the shooting star of the German photography scene and a sought-after portraitist of prominent politicians and celebrities such as Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, the Italian ambassador Antonio Puri Purini, Christiane zu Salm, and Gerhard Richter.

In 2014, Candida Höfer (b. Eberswalde, Germany, 1944; lives and works in Cologne) traveled to Mexico, visiting the eight cities Ciudad de México, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tepotzotlán, Tlacochahuaya, and Tonantzintla, where she photographed old and new libraries, theaters and opera houses, churches and museums, poorhouses and palaces. Most of the pictures are organized by symmetry along a central axis, a characteristic feature of her art. If these works suggest her training with Hilla and Bernd Becher, who taught photography in Düsseldorf—she is now the best-known of their students—others show a “new” Candida Höfer: old-fashioned offices, weather-beaten walls, and simple stores as well as a few expertly captured details of façades, floors, and interiors. With an essay by the Mexican historian and economist José N. Iturriaga.

Futile takes places in Spain and comprises two sets of photojournalistic survey, tracing architectural remnants of the recent recession. The photographers set out in the summer of 2013 to document what the financial crisis had left behind. The first set shows a vast array of unfinished buildings all over the country. The second is a series of images taken at the finished but unused Don Quijote Airport. This ghost airport is one of the largest investment ruins of Spain. The publication includes an essay by Jeroen Nieuwland.

Mouches volantes oder Fliegende Mücken beschreibt das Phänomen seltsamer transparenter Formen, die im eigenen Blickfeld schweben. Ihr Ursprung wird medizinisch mit Glaskörpertrübungen erklärt. Sie entstehen als kleine Verklumpungen im Auge und beeinträchtigen die Sicht nur gering. Erst wenn das Bewusstsein sich auf sie richtet, werden sie zu einem Schleier vor der Welt. Flüchtig hingekritzelte Gedanken, Rückgriffe aufs eigene Fotoarchiv oder seltsame Raumaufnahmen aus dem Internet dienen der Künstlerin Romy Julia Kroppe in »fliegende mücken/mouches volantes« als Materialien anhaltender Neukonstruktionen. Kopieren, Einscannen; Rückbau, Manipulation und Korrektur. Mit Markern und Pinseln werden zerstückelte Fotokopien überarbeitet, in anderen Bildern treffen schnelle zeichnerische Gesten auf langwierig ausgearbeitete Flächen. Ein Angriff auf das Sehen, das idealerweise statisch sein sollte; aber nicht psychedelisch, keine rauschhaften Neuinterpretationen, sondern als Abbildungen für das Handicap des Erkennens in einer multivisuellen Welt.
