Ecology has as its Greek root oikos, meaning the entire habitat, house, or family—an interdependent ecosystem. (Economy has the same root.) We know it now as the study of the relationship between organisms and their environment, the interdependence of humans and their institutions. As Chickasaw poet Linda Hogan notes: “Here is a lesson: what happens to people and what happens to the land is the same thing.” And this is what the work that follows weighs. The third volume of the documenta 14 South as a State of Mind concerns the constant correlation among nature, capital, power, and language. The contributions that follow are documents of language, or hunger, or both. Why “language or hunger”? Consider the mouth a border, a boundary, a threshold: to swallow or to speak. Emptiness or language (or their meeting). On one side, inside, one feels physical hunger, a void; on the other side, outside, one puts forth language (into another void, perhaps). Hence language—being born with one, or finding it again, or creating one anew, a kind of lexicon—can be a means of nourishment, while hunger can be a form of resistance. Indeed, the new essays, poems, scripts, artists projects, and older manifestos and parables that together constitute this issue of South articulate the necessity of language, while considering consumption and hunger as political and aesthetic facts and fields that determined our past and will construct our collective future. “In contemporary times,” Nabil Ahmed writes, “emergent ecological crisis is a paradigmatic negative moment with regard to the unresolved dark twinning of capitalism and colonialism.” And it is this dark twinning that is our focus. If, as Ahmed declares, attentiveness to environmental violence is necessary for the “formation of an anticapitalist political ecology at once structural, social, psychic, and environmental,” we believe that an awareness of the role that language plays in this formation, as complicity or resistance, psychic or structural, is equally important. Man nannte Willy Fleckhaus (1925–1983) den „teuersten Bleistift Deutschlands“ und Deutschlands ersten Art Director. Wie kein Zweiter hat er die visuelle Kultur der noch jungen Bundesrepublik in den sechziger, siebziger und achtziger Jahre geprägt. Er verschmolz die Ratio der Schweizer Grafik mit der leidenschaftlichen Emotionalität des amerikanischen Magazindesigns. International bekannt wurde er durch sein bahnbrechendes Design der Jugendzeitschrift Twen, die durch ihr inhaltliches Konzept, großzügige Gestaltung, moderne Typografie und Fotografie gleich mehrere Generationen prägte. Fleckhaus arbeitete mit bedeutenden Fotografen seiner Zeit wie z.B. Will McBride, Thomas Höpker, Hans Feurer, Charlotte March, Ulrich Mack, Guido Mangold, Stefan Moses, Reinhart Wolf. Neben seiner Arbeit für Twen entwickelte er auch Layoutkonzepte für die Illustrierte Quick (in ihren guten Jahren) oder das Supplement der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung (ab 1980), Buchreihen wie die in den Farben des Regenbogens gehaltene Edition Suhrkamp oder die Taschenbücher des Insel Verlages. Die Autoren Michael Koetzle und Carsten Wolff (der mit seinem Büro das Buch kongenial gestaltete) schreiben endlich die umfassende Monografie über einen der prägenden wichtigsten Gestalter des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Buch erscheint zu den Ausstellungen im MAK Köln, Museum für Kunst- und Gewerbe, Hamburg und Villa Stuck, München, weitere Ausstellungen in Planung. Willy Fleckhaus (1925-1983) was one of the most innovative, creative and influential graphic designers in postwar Germany. He became internationally known for his groundbreaking work on the lifestyle magazine Twen, which attracted generations of readers with its generous layouts, modern typography and distinctive choice of house photographers such as (among others) Will McBride, Charlotte March, Guido Mangold, Reinhart Wolf. He invented the position of the „art director“, when this job description did not yet exist in Germany and earned himself the nickname of “Germany’s most expensive pencil”. Beside his longterm involvement with Twen he worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazine (from 1980 onwards), the magazine Quick, developped book series such as Edition Suhrkamp with its famous rainbow-coloured covers, exhibition designs for the Photokina trade fair in Cologne, and the logo of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk broadcasting corporation. The book, the first comprehensive monograph on Willy Fleckhaus in an international edition, includes texts by Michael Koetzle and Carsten Wolff (who also took over the book design), both long time collectors of Fleckhaus work samples. Published to coincide with the travelling exhibition at MAK Cologne, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg and Villa Stuck, Munich, further venues planned.

About This Book Dialectical acuity and lucid absurdity are the defining characteristics of the sculptures and object constellations created by Alicja Kwade (b. Katowice, 1979; lives and works in Berlin). The artist deftly combines elementary materials and ordinary objects with products that carry their own cultural histories. Her haunting “pictures” in space probe the human condition under the sway of physics as well as late capitalism. The conceptual tenacity and sensual quality of Kwade’s work and her keen sense of materials, surfaces, and spatial interrelations earned the artist the 2015 hector prize, which comes with a solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Mannheim. The catalogue accompanying the show offers insights into the extensive oeuvre she has built since 2001.
