But as momentum grows in one of the largest women’s movements of the modern age, an emerging refrain now is that “it’s gone too far”. In this issue of SLEEK, we’ve brought together a group of thinkers across the arts who offer a riposte to this view and present a new contemporary feminism that’s thriving in a post-shame world — proving that there’s no such thing as going too far.

THE ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW (by Owen Hatherley): This wonderful book documents the architectural results of another Soviet anniversary – the celebrations of the centenary of Lenin’s birth in Ulyanovsk, formerly Simbirsk, the small city on the Volga where he was born. Told by the authorities in Moscow that the ‘door would be open’ for them to modernise their mainly wooden, one-storey, Tsarist city for the duration of the celebrations, and that they’d close it immediately when it was over, the local Party rushed to build a Museum, a Library, a Palace of Culture, housing, an Airport and the high-rise Hotel Venets before the tap of money and resources was turned off. In its first year of opening, two Poles, 70 Britons, and more than 3,000 East Germans arrived to stay in the Hotel Venets, and we get to read the inventory of difficult questions they answered (‘can we see how people live in those little wooden houses?’), and find out how hotel staff took it out on the guests.

True issue 5 takes us on a tour of continents: from Africa to Europe and across to North America. On the way we’re introduced to individuals, families, their communities and homes. The issue’s diverse group of contributors capture this theme of ‘people and place’ through a variety of lenses: Lea Colombo’s vivid ‘Seven Chakras of South Africa’ shows the people she met during a road trip along the Eastern Cape of her home country in 2016. Pieter Hugo presents an intimate series of family portraits from his archive, entitled ‘Family’. The images, taken in Africa and Europe over the course of a decade, provide glimpses into different family environments that at points feel familiar and at others entirely unknown. Elsewhere Gregory Halpern’s story, ‘Revisiting Omaha’, introduces the communities he met during a residency at the city’s Bemis Center in 2005. Gregory recalls this as an important and foundational period in the development of his photographic style and approach. The universal theme continues in Nick Haymes’ ongoing documentary of Bailey and her circle of friends at the Savage Ranch artistic community in Temecula, California. And in Sam Rock’s photographic essay created during the 2017 French Tennis Open, where he captures the congregation of spectators that share his love of the sport. Elsewhere in the issue are stories created in collaboration: Bibi Cornejo Borthwick and her father Mark Borthwick stage a fashion show on the streets of Brooklyn. While Benedict Brink’s experimental project with set designer Mila Taylor Young and model Yasmine Moon explores form and femininity. Chris Rhodes curates a selection of accidental images, out of focus subjects and frames shot solely to finish rolls of film. Gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts schien eine zur Epoche gewordenen „Moderne“ beendet und mit der Postmoderne der Aufbruch in eine neue Unübersichtlichkeit und einen freien Stilpluralismus entschieden. Um die Jahrtausendwende begann international eine Neubefragung der Moderne. Vor allem in der Bildenden Kunst erfährt die Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Epoche und ihren verschiedenen Phasen aktuell eine unerwartete Intensität. Weltweit entstehen Forschungen und Ausstellungen zu regionalen Modernen, werden übersehene Künstler – auch durch einen hungrigen Kunstmarkt – neu- oder wiederentdeckt. Ein Anreiz zur Auseinandersetzung mit den Utopien und Formsprachen der „ersten“ Moderne kommt dabei nicht zuletzt von den Künstlern, die sich von der historischen Aufbruchsstimmung inspirieren lassen oder die Moderne als „DNA des Zeitgenössischen“ für sich nutzen. As the #metoo revelations and protests by the Preis der Nationalgalerie’s nominees demonstrated, gender discrimination and feminist lip-service are alive and well in Berlin. And in this regard, the latest figure of attack is arguably the “influencer”, a typically young, typically slender white woman with an avocado fixation and reams of Instagram followers influencing – well, its not really clear what. Thus for this issue of SLEEK, we’re going beyond this problematic construction to identify people we think are re-shaping culture and transforming existing notions of identity and politics in the digital age.
