sphere publishers wurde 2019 gegründet. Themenfelder der im Verlag veröffentlichten Publikationen finden sich in der Kunst, der Fotografie und Architektur sowie in gesellschaftlichen Fragestellungen wieder.

Sphere möchte hierbei einen Raum, eine Nische für Text- und Bildschaffende zur Verfügung stellen, in dem aktuell unterrepräsentierte Themen in der Gesellschaft Platz finden. Der Verlag begreift dies nicht als Bildungsauftrag. Vielmehr steht der individuelle Standpunkt und Ausdruck der Autoren*Innen im Verlag im Mittelpunkt.

Between 2012 and 2018, the Neue Altstadt, or ”new old town,“ was built in the centre of Frankfurt am Main. Here, two design features—old stone elements (spolia) and a chromatic master plan based on a reconstruction of the historical colours of the façades—were used as prime evidence of historical authenticity in the debates that raged in the newspapers as the construction work proceeded. However, these design elements were in many cases read as pastiche, as the only role these quotations play here is to suggest a linear historical thread intended to forge a sense of identity. The conceptual photo book Frankfurt Copies uses overprinting to pair up photographs of all the spolia used in constructing Frankfurt’s Neue Altstadt with the colours of the particular building. The rhythm of the page sequences constitutes a walk through the spatial sequencing of a different ”new old town,“ one that is aware of its own historicity and where the historical process becomes visible as a palimpsest.

L’Ano Solare. Un programma di un anno su sesso e auto-esibizione è il risultato di una ricerca su sessualità, performatività e autorappresentazione nel campo delle arti visive e performative.
Il titolo della pubblicazione omaggia l’omonimo libro di Georges Bataille (L’ano solare), in cui il concetto di analisi – come dispositivo politico capace di sfidare il patriarcato e l’eteronormatività – è il sole di una comprensione situata e di un’epistemologia radicale. Il volume condensa le riflessioni articolate in L’Ano Solare. Un programma di un anno sul sesso e l’auto-esibizione, un programma strutturato in sette episodi e composto da mostre, performance, proiezioni e conferenze. Il programma ha visto protagonisti trentatré autori e si è svolto tra il 2019 e il 2021 presso Il Colorificio di Milano, al Teatrino Palazzo Grassi di Venezia e a Casa Testori di Novate

Begonnen hatte das bewegte Architektenleben Franz Ehrlichs (1907-1984) am Bauhaus in Dessau. 1937 wurde er als Widerstandskämpfer ins KZ Buchenwald gebracht, wo er das Tor mit der Inschrift »Jedem das Seine« gestalten musste. In der DDR nahm Ehrlichs Karriere Schwung auf – aber sein umfassender Geltungsanspruch kollidierte mit den politischen Leitlinien.

Für ihren biographischen Essay begeben sich der Designtheoretiker Friedrich von Borries und der Historiker Jens-Uwe Fischer auf die Spuren eines lange vergessenen Bauhäuslers. Dabei reflektieren sie über die Widersprüche in Ehrlichs Biographie sowie die Ambivalenzen und den Totalitätsanspruch der Moderne. In summer 2021, the Museum Folkwang in Essen will be showing the work of Tobias Zielony in a large survey exhibition, featuring photographs and video works from the last twenty years. One of the key themes in Zielony’s artistic work is youth culture, its relationship to background, status, and fashion, and the definition of identity associated with this in a realm where the realities of the medium are shifting. Digital culture has revolutionized the ways in which photographic images can communicate, fundamentally altering the idea of the self and self-representation. In Zielony’s works, the subjects of his pictures appear as self-aware participants in this process of interaction—engaging in a global exchange of social codes and self-images, irrespective of the cultural and social differences between the people involved. Spector Books has consistently supported Zielony’s work from the start of his career. In 2008 we published Trona, now in its third edition, followed by Manitoba (2011), Jenny Jenny (2013), and Vele (2014). This sustained process of close collaboration has given rise to an unusual idea for the catalogue for the Essen exhibition. It is to be published as a series of six small volumes, each showing two to four works in full and accompanied by a text that creates a counterpoint to these works in the form of an essay or piece of fiction. Six protagonists of the new literary generation—Sophia Eisenhut, Joshua Gross, Dora Koderhold, Enis Maci, Mazlum Nergiz, and Jakob Nolte—have agreed to take part in this project.

Born in 1973 in Wuppertal, Germany, Tobias Zielony studied Documentary Photography in Newport and Leipzig. In 2015 the artist participated at a group show for the German Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale with his work The Citizen (2015). He had group shows for example at Bozar Center for Fine Arts, Brussels (2015) and the 2nd Montevideo Biennial (2014) and solo shows at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2011) and Berlinische Galerie (2013).
