magazine of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation
#10 — standart (engl.)
Types, standards, and benchmarks determine our everyday lives. Standards make things comparable
but also the same; they create a framework and are constantly renegotiated. The Bauhaus Dessau in
particular pursued standardization in architecture and design as it promised greater quality of living
for the masses. Bauhaus 10 takes up the annual theme ‘Standard’ of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation,
highlighting historical and contemporary perspectives. This issue encounters type furniture and standardized stages, prefabricated living modules and universal knots, the inventors of the DIN standard and the ‘custodians’ of standardization as it joins architects, artists, and expert mediators in
approaching current ‘standard questions’.
