#202 - this was england
In 1979 Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister of the UK. Equally loved and loathed, her policies of deregulation and privatisation of state-owned assets changed the country into a modern market economy. However, the reduced power of the trade unions and reduced state intervention also contributed to unemployment reaching more than three million.
Issue 202: This Was England of Hotshoe explores this same period, 1970 to 1990 which saw a proliferation of photographers making excellent work in Britain that we have not seen the likes of since the obliteration of the polytechnics - including Martin Parr, Tom Wood, Anna Fox, John Myers, Paul Graham, Karren Knorr and Olivier Richon, Chris Killip, Sunil Gupta, Dafydd Jones, Shirley Baker, Ken Grant, Homer Sykes snd Chris Steele-Perkins.
